Chapter 18 - When the Desert Bloomed Again

Years passed.

Not quickly.

Not slowly.

Simply as years do when a person finally stops counting miles.

Elias's beard gained gray.

Aayoka's laughter became more frequent.

Their home expanded.

The leaning wall remained because Aayoka refused to let Elias fix it.

“It has history.”

“You mocked that wall for years.”

“Now I am preserving your failure.”

They eventually had a daughter.

They named her Mara.

She grew up hearing stories about the forbidden spring.

At six, she asked Elias whether the water truly spoke.

“Sometimes.”

“What does it say?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“On what you need to hear.”

Mara considered this seriously.

“Can I drink it?”

Aayoka answered from behind them.

“When you're older.”

Mara frowned.

“Why?”

“Because your father causes enough trouble for this family.”

Elias laughed.

Red Mesa changed too.

The community rebuilt.

A school opened.

Trade returned.

The spring remained untouched except for those permitted to approach.

Tourists occasionally arrived seeking the legendary cursed water.

Elias usually sent them away disappointed.

“It isn't cursed,” he told one.

“Then what's special about it?”

Elias looked toward Aayoka.

“Depends what you're running from.”

Years after Harcourt's conviction, a letter arrived.

Silas Creed had died in prison.

Elias read it once.

Then burned it.

Aayoka watched.

“Nothing to say?”

“No.”

“You hated him for years.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Elias watched the paper become ash.

“Now he's gone.”

That was enough.

The past no longer needed his anger to remain real.

He returned to the porch.

Mara ran toward him.

Aayoka followed.

Elias looked around.

Family.

Horses.

Home.

Once, he would have believed such things could only become weaknesses.

Now he understood they were the reasons strength mattered.

Still, one mystery remained.

The first words.

You belong to me.

He had never heard them again.

May you like

Until the summer Mara turned ten.
