Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Came Back

Celia was released years later under strict conditions after serving part of her sentence and cooperating extensively with investigators.

She did not contact Maxwell.

She contacted Martha.

“I need help.”

Martha nearly ended the call.

“With what?”

“My mother’s grave.”

Evelyn had been buried under a modest marker.

Celia wanted to replace it.

Not with something grand.

With something truthful.

Martha told Maxwell.

He was silent for a long time.

Then he said:

“I’ll pay for it.”

Celia refused the money.

That mattered.

At the cemetery, Maxwell arrived walking with a cane.

Celia saw him.

Her eyes filled.

“You’re walking.”

“Yes.”

“I’m glad.”

“Thank you.”

Awkward silence.

Then Celia showed them the stone.

EVELYN DELANEY

BELOVED MOTHER

SHE TOLD THE TRUTH WHEN POWER DEMANDED SILENCE.

Maxwell touched the engraved letters.

“My father should have been the one exposed.”

Celia nodded.

“But I became like him trying to punish him.”

Martha watched them.

Healing was strange.

It did not make the past disappear.

It simply stopped the past from owning every future decision.

Celia looked at Maxwell.

“I don’t expect us to be family.”

“We already are.”

She blinked.

“That doesn’t mean we know how to be one.”

A tiny smile appeared.

“No.”

“Maybe we learn.”

Celia cried.

Maxwell hugged her.

It was awkward.

Brief.

Real.

Martha looked away to give them privacy.

Then Maxwell called:

“Martha.”

She turned.

He held out his hand.

She joined them.

Three people stood beside the grave of a woman whose truth had been buried for decades.

No empire.

No servants.

No fear.

May you like

Just truth.
