Chapter 16 - The Wedding Nobody Expected

They married in the garden behind the rehabilitation center.

No politicians.

No crime bosses.

No reporters.

Only friends, patients, therapists, Adrian, Celia, and a handful of people who had stayed when there was nothing left to gain.

Julian received permission to watch through a secure video connection.

Maxwell wore a black tuxedo.

Martha wore a simple ivory dress.

When the music began, Maxwell stood at the end of the aisle.

No cane.

Martha saw him.

She stopped.

Not because he was standing.

Because he was smiling.

The man she first met had possessed everything except peace.

The man waiting for her had lost an empire and found a life.

She walked toward him.

Maxwell whispered:

“You look beautiful.”

“You’re standing.”

“I practiced.”

“You better not fall during the vows.”

“Romantic.”

“I try.”

They laughed.

The ceremony was simple.

When Maxwell said, “I do,” his voice broke.

Martha squeezed his hands.

At the reception, Adrian raised a glass.

“To cold water.”

Everyone looked confused.

Martha groaned.

Maxwell laughed.

Celia understood.

She laughed too.

Later, Maxwell danced with Martha.

Slowly.

His right leg remained weaker.

His balance wasn’t perfect.

Martha kept one hand against his shoulder.

“You’re watching my feet.”

“Occupational hazard.”

“Look at me.”

She did.

“Better?”

“Much.”

They moved beneath the lights.

For years Maxwell had believed walking again would be the moment that proved he had recovered.

He had been wrong.

Recovery was not standing.

It was trusting.

It was telling the truth.

It was accepting consequences.

It was forgiving without forgetting.

It was allowing someone to love you without owning them.

And as Martha rested her head against his chest, Maxwell realized something.

He no longer cared whether anyone feared his name.

May you like

He cared whether the woman in his arms felt safe beside him.
