Chapter 7 - Ingrid's Ultimatum

“You humiliated my son.”

Those were Ingrid's first words.

I sat in my car outside the restaurant.

“No hello?”

“This isn't funny.”

“I agree.”

“What happened tonight?”

“You should ask Lukas.”

“He's devastated.”

“Interesting.”

“Evelyn.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You need to think carefully before destroying your marriage over one mistake.”

“One mistake?”

“He made a terrible decision.”

“For five months?”

“Men panic.”

“And mothers make plans to hand babies to women who haven't agreed to raise them?”

Silence.

Then Ingrid said, “So you did understand us.”

“Yes.”

“All this time?”

“Yes.”

Her breathing changed.

For years, language had given her power.

Now that power was gone.

“You deceived us.”

The hypocrisy was almost impressive.

“I learned your language. That's not deception.”

“You allowed us to believe—”

“That I couldn't understand you while you insulted me?”

She stopped.

I continued.

“I heard everything, Ingrid.”

“You're emotional.”

“No. I'm finished.”

She tried another strategy.

“Think about the baby.”

“I am. That's why I'm not participating in whatever you imagined.”

“You've wanted a child for years.”

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

“My infertility is not permission to use me.”

“I didn't mean—”

“Yes, you did.”

I ended the call.

Then I cried.

Not because Ingrid had hurt me.

Because for six years I had blamed my body for failing to give me the family I wanted.

Now people I trusted had taken that grief and turned it into leverage.

But pain can become clarity if you survive the first impact.

The next morning, I changed the locks after confirming what I could legally do with my attorney.

Lukas returned for his belongings with Rachel's advice echoing in my head: document everything, communicate clearly, don't escalate.

He stood in the doorway.

“You're really doing this?”

“Yes.”

“Ten years?”

“You ended those ten years before I knew they were ending.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You built a system.”

He flinched.

I handed him a box.

“You lied to me. You lied to Sophia. You lied about our marriage. You used my infertility to manipulate her and me.”

“I love you.”

“That sentence doesn't mean what it used to.”

He looked older suddenly.

“Is there someone else?”

I stared at him.

He actually asked.

“No, Lukas.”

He looked ashamed.

“Then why won't you fight for us?”

“I am fighting.”

I closed the door gently.

“For myself.”

Two weeks later, the divorce filing began.

Then Sophia called.

She was crying.

“Something's wrong.”

“With the baby?”

“No.”

She inhaled.

“With Lukas.”

“What happened?”

“He says he wants custody.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course he did.

“He says his family can prove I'm unstable.”

“Can they?”

“No.”

“Then don't panic.”

“But Evelyn...”

“Yes?”

“He says you're going to testify for him.”

I stood.

“What?”

“He told his attorney you can confirm I never wanted the baby.”

There it was again.

Another lie.

May you like

Only this time, Lukas had made one mistake.

He had put my name into it.
