Chapter 10 - The Trial

Cordelia pleaded guilty to assault.

The outcome wasn't cinematic.

No screaming courtroom confession.

No dramatic jury gasp.

Just consequences.

Probation conditions.

Restitution.

Community service.

Mandatory counseling.

The evidence-related investigation remained separate, with attorneys sorting through events that had happened decades earlier.

Flynn sat behind his mother.

I sat beside Phoebe.

Cordelia looked at me before sentencing.

I didn't look away.

When it ended, reporters waited outside.

I refused interviews about my marriage.

Instead, I made one statement.

“Briar House will become the Hale Lake Restoration Center. The property will serve the community my family should have protected from the beginning.”

That sentence became the headline.

For once, the story wasn't about Cordelia.

It wasn't about Flynn.

It wasn't even about me.

It was about what came next.

Construction began that spring.

The ballroom became a public meeting space.

Grandfather's study became an archive.

The east wing became offices for scientists and community advocates.

And the staircase remained untouched.

At first, everyone assumed I'd want it removed.

I didn't.
