Chapter 4 - The Second Test

By the time we reached Vance Holdings, security had contained Chloe and Peter inside the records office without confronting them.
They had not forced a lock.
They had used Julian’s access code and a temporary authorization bearing my electronic signature.
The authorization was false.
Ruth contacted the police. I instructed security to preserve every camera recording and access log.
Julian watched the monitor as Chloe searched through locked cabinets while Peter photographed file labels.
“I gave her that code,” he said.
“You gave it to the woman you intended to marry.”
“I gave it to someone I didn’t know.”
On the screen, Peter gestured angrily toward the cabinets. Chloe shook her head. Their polished partnership was beginning to crack.
The police arrived and escorted them downstairs.
Chloe insisted she had entered the building to retrieve evidence proving Peter’s accusations against me. Peter said Chloe had arranged everything.
Neither explanation matched the access records.
Because the locked files had not been opened and no sensitive material appeared to have been taken, Ruth warned us that the legal process might be slower and less dramatic than Julian wanted.
“Real accountability usually is,” she said.
Chloe was released pending further investigation.
Peter retained an attorney and stopped answering questions.
The engagement, however, ended that night.
Julian sent Chloe a brief written message.
There will be no wedding. Do not contact my mother or any member of her staff. Future communication must go through counsel.
She responded with forty-seven messages.
The first pleaded.
The next blamed Peter.
The final twelve blamed me.
Three days later, Chloe gave an interview to a popular online gossip program.
She presented herself as a working-class woman persecuted by a wealthy family. She said I had lured her into my home under false pretenses, illegally recorded her, and staged a confrontation designed to destroy her reputation.
The program displayed a photograph of me removing the wet wig.
Someone had taken the image from the foyer’s interior security feed.
The clip ended before the bucket was poured.
Online, strangers debated whether I was a controlling mother who could not release her son.
Chloe’s followers multiplied.
Then she announced that she possessed evidence of financial abuse inside the Vance family.
It was an effective counterattack because it contained one uncomfortable truth: I had deceived her.
I had worn a disguise and tested her without revealing my identity.
At a meeting with Ruth, Julian, Elena, and Luis, I said what I had avoided saying aloud.
“My method was morally questionable.”
Julian looked at me. “She poured dirty water over you.”
“That proves what she did. It does not make every choice I made wise.”
Elena shook her head. “You believed us when no one else did.”
“Yes. But I also put myself inside an abusive situation to create evidence. I allowed it to continue longer than necessary.”
Luis spoke carefully. “If you had stopped early, Mr. Julian might still think we exaggerated.”
“That is true. And it is why Julian’s refusal to listen was so damaging.”
My son accepted the words without defending himself.
We decided not to fight Chloe through gossip channels. Ruth issued a restrained statement confirming that the engagement had ended and that an investigation into falsified documents and unauthorized building access was underway.
No insults.
No leaked recording.
No public spectacle.
Chloe interpreted restraint as weakness.
She filed a civil complaint alleging emotional distress, defamation, and unlawful surveillance. Ruth believed most claims would fail, but failure was not necessarily Chloe’s immediate goal.
“She wants discovery,” Ruth explained. “She wants access to internal records.”
“Then we give her what the law requires,” I said.
“And nothing more.”
That was when I proposed the second test.
Not another disguise.
Not another trap.
We would inform Chloe’s attorney that I was willing to consider a confidential settlement to avoid prolonged publicity. The offer would contain two choices.
The first provided a modest payment covering documented wedding expenses in exchange for ending all claims and returning confidential materials.
The second offered a far larger sum—but required Chloe to sign a sworn declaration stating that Peter acted alone and that she had never requested, used, or possessed falsified Vance documents.
If Chloe was innocent, she would refuse to swear to facts she could not verify.
If she was knowingly involved, greed might tempt her into creating evidence against herself.
Ruth studied me.
“You realize we cannot misrepresent the terms.”
“We won’t.”
“And if she accepts, we must be prepared to pay unless the agreement allows withdrawal for false representations.”
“Write it accordingly.”
Julian was uncomfortable.
“This feels like another trap.”
“It is a choice,” Ruth said. “Every statement will be clear.”
I looked at my son. “You do not have to participate.”
He considered that.
“I already participated by giving her my trust.”
The settlement proposal went out the next morning.
Chloe rejected the modest option within an hour.
She requested a meeting to discuss the larger payment.
At the meeting, Ruth read every clause aloud. Chloe had her own attorney present. She was advised repeatedly that the declaration would be sworn under penalty of perjury.
Chloe signed.
She stated that she had never requested trust documents, never authorized Peter to use Julian’s signature, and never entered Vance Holdings for an improper purpose.
Afterward, she looked at me with triumph.
“You thought I’d be afraid.”
“No,” I said. “I thought you’d be impatient.”
The agreement allowed ten business days to verify her declarations.
On the third day, our forensic examiner recovered messages from a cloud backup connected to the tablet Chloe had used for wedding planning. The device belonged to Julian, giving him lawful access to the account and its preserved data.
The messages were between Chloe and Peter.
They discussed the trust amendment.
They discussed the forged authorization.
They discussed which employees Chloe would dismiss after moving into my home.
One message contained a photograph of the Cartier bracelet hidden inside Chloe’s purse.
Beneath it, Peter had written:
If the old woman’s servant takes the blame, you’ll know how easily the staff can be controlled.
Chloe replied:
The servant isn’t the real problem. Eleanor is.
May you like
Then came the message that changed everything.
Once the wedding is over, Julian signs the incapacity petition. His mother won’t control anything after that.
