Chapter 5 - Chloe’s Counterattack

The proposed incapacity petition was more than an insult.

It was a plan to remove my legal authority over my company and assets by portraying me as mentally unfit.

Peter had prepared drafts alleging confusion, paranoia, impulsive behavior, and an unhealthy obsession with controlling Julian.

My disguise now looked, when stripped of context, like evidence created for their argument.

Chloe had encouraged the test.

Not directly, but carefully.

She had mistreated staff members in ways likely to reach me. She had behaved suspiciously enough to provoke confrontation. If I reacted emotionally, Peter could describe me as unstable. If I did nothing, Chloe could continue building influence over Julian.

The bucket had not been planned in advance. I believed Chloe’s cruelty was too spontaneous for that.

But afterward, she recognized its usefulness.

She had obtained the edited security image to show me in disguise and omitted everything that explained why.

“This was never only about money,” Julian said. “She wanted control over the story.”

Ruth nodded. “Control over Eleanor, the employees, and eventually you.”

Julian read the messages twice.

Then he left the room and became physically ill.

I found him in the downstairs bathroom gripping the sink.

“I was going to marry her.”

I stood behind him, visible in the mirror.

“Yes.”

“I would have signed things.”

“Perhaps.”

“I could have helped her take your company.”

“You could also have noticed before that happened.”

He turned toward me. “How can you be so calm?”

“Because one of us must be.”

That was only partly true.

Calm had been my armor for most of my life. People assumed it meant I did not feel deeply. In reality, I had learned that anger delivered quietly was harder to dismiss.

Chloe’s attorney received notice that the settlement agreement was void because of material falsehoods.

Hours later, Chloe published a video.

She wept into the camera and accused Julian of giving me access to her private messages. She claimed the messages had been altered. She said the Vance family was threatening her because she had uncovered financial crimes.

Then she released an audio clip.

My voice said, “If Chloe was gone tomorrow, everything would return to normal.”

It sounded terrible.

It was also genuine.

I had spoken those words to Elena two weeks before the disguise.

Chloe presented them as a threat.

Within hours, reporters gathered outside the company and my home. Vance Holdings’ board requested an emergency meeting. Two business partners postponed negotiations.

Chloe had found the advantage she needed.

The full conversation with Elena had not been recorded by me.

But someone else had captured part of it.

A small home-security device in the study had activated when a delivery driver approached the window. The audio began thirty seconds before my sentence and ended shortly afterward.

The complete passage was:

“If Chloe was gone tomorrow, everything would return to normal on the surface. But Julian would still have failed to listen, and the employees would still know their dignity depended on whether a powerful person believed them. Removing Chloe would not solve what happened here.”

Her edit transformed self-criticism into menace.

Unfortunately, our system’s copy lacked the final seconds because the device stopped when the movement outside ended. The recording showed enough to prove manipulation but not enough to restore the entire conversation.

Elena remembered every word.

Chloe’s attorney called her biased.

At the emergency board meeting, several directors urged me to step aside temporarily.

One director, Harrison Cole, spoke with practiced sympathy.

“This has become a distraction, Eleanor. No one is declaring you incapable. We’re asking you to consider the company’s stability.”

The language sounded familiar.

Ruth noticed it too.

Afterward, she searched the draft incapacity petition.

Harrison’s name appeared in the metadata.

He had reviewed it three weeks earlier.

The threat was inside my boardroom.

Harrison had served beside my husband for fifteen years. He attended our anniversary dinners. He spoke at the funeral.

And he had secretly advised Peter.

When confronted, Harrison denied everything. He claimed Peter had asked him to review an abstract legal scenario.

The board placed him on leave while outside counsel investigated.

Chloe used the development to strengthen her public claims.

She said corruption had infected the company and that I was blaming her to conceal it.

Julian wanted to release the entire three-hour recording.

Ruth advised against it while litigation and the police investigation continued.

“Then she gets to lie,” he said.

“For now,” Ruth replied.

Justice was not failing. It was moving at the speed required to survive scrutiny.

That evening, someone threw red paint across our front gate.

No one was harmed, but the message was clear: Chloe’s performance had found an audience.

Luis helped the security team clean it.

I came outside and took a brush from him.

“You don’t need to do this,” he said.

“Neither do you.”

We worked together in the cold until Julian joined us.

For a while, none of us spoke.

Then Luis said, “Miss Bennett called my daughter.”

I stopped painting.

“What?”

“She told Sofia that I would lose my job because I lied.”

Julian’s face hardened. “How did she get Sofia’s number?”

“She had access to the emergency contact list.”

That crossed a line different from all the others.

Ruth obtained an order barring Chloe from contacting employees and their families.

Chloe responded by claiming Luis had threatened her.

She produced a voicemail in which a man’s voice said, “You’ll pay for what you did.”

The number displayed as Luis’s.

Police arrived at his home the following morning.

Luis was taken in for questioning while his daughter watched from the porch.

The call records pointed directly to his telephone.

Chloe had turned a man she once forced to his knees into the villain of her story.

And this time, the evidence appeared to support her.
