Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Inside His Ear

Damian Voss did something nobody inside his mansion expected.
He pretended nothing had changed.
Richard Kane stood in the library doorway staring at him.
Damian stared back.
Neither man moved.
Then Damian turned toward Claire and deliberately reached for his tablet.
He typed.
TAKE YOUR SON UPSTAIRS.
Claire understood.
Damian wanted Richard to believe he still needed written communication.
She nodded.
Richard’s shoulders relaxed almost invisibly.
That tiny movement told Claire more than any confession could have.
He was relieved.
Damian noticed too.
Claire took Noah upstairs with Mateo Ruiz, Damian’s security chief.
Mateo was broad-shouldered, quiet, and one of the few men in the mansion Claire had never seen treat employees like furniture.
He brought them to a guest suite.
“Stay here.”
Claire folded her arms.
“Are we allowed to leave?”
“No.”
“So we’re prisoners?”
“Protected.”
“Those sound suspiciously similar.”
Mateo almost smiled.
“Tonight they probably are.”
Noah climbed onto a sofa.
“Can I have chocolate?”
Claire stared at him.
Her son had just pulled a mysterious electronic object from the ear of one of the most dangerous men in New York and was worried about dessert.
“No.”
Mateo looked toward a bowl on the table.
“One.”
Claire sighed.
“One.”
Noah immediately forgot the conspiracy.
Claire did not.
Twenty minutes later, Damian entered with Dr. Samuel Ellis, the physician who had treated him for years.
Damian closed the door.
Then spoke aloud.
“Examine it.”
Dr. Ellis nearly dropped his medical case.
“You can hear?”
“Somewhat.”
“How?”
Damian looked toward Noah.
“My specialist.”
Noah waved.
Dr. Ellis examined Damian’s ear first.
“There’s irritation deep in the canal.”
“Could that object have caused the hearing loss?”
“I need to inspect it.”
The tiny device rested inside an evidence bag.
Dr. Ellis studied it under magnification.
His expression changed.
“This isn’t medical.”
Damian’s voice became quieter.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Guess.”
The doctor hesitated.
“It looks engineered to produce continuous localized interference. Possibly electrical. Possibly ultrasonic.”
Claire stared.
“Can that stop someone from hearing?”
“In theory, prolonged disruption could interfere with normal auditory processing.”
Damian touched his ear.
“And once removed?”
“If the inner structures weren’t destroyed…”
“Hearing could return.”
“Yes.”
Silence filled the room.
Except for Damian, silence no longer meant nothing.
He could hear Noah opening a chocolate wrapper.
Claire breathing too quickly.
Rain against glass.
The hum of the air-conditioning.
Three years of sound returning all at once.
Dr. Ellis rotated the device.
“There’s marking here.”
Damian leaned closer.
“What?”
“RK-12.”
Mateo swore.
Damian turned.
“Explain.”
Mateo looked uncomfortable.
“Richard Kane ran Private Unit Twelve before becoming your household director.”
Claire felt the room grow colder.
Damian’s face remained still.
“When I woke up deaf three years ago, who was allowed inside my hospital room?”
Dr. Ellis looked away.
“Medical staff.”
“Who else?”
“Damian…”
“Who?”
The doctor swallowed.
“Richard.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
Mateo stepped toward the door.
“I’ll bring him in.”
“No.”
Mateo stopped.
Damian looked toward Claire.
“If Kane believes I can hear, he runs.”
“He already knows something happened.”
“He doesn’t know how much.”
Claire understood.
“You want to listen.”
Damian nodded.
For the next hour, Damian Voss walked through his own home pretending to be deaf.
What he heard changed everything.
Two staff members whispered about security logs being erased.
A financial assistant quietly told Richard that a file called ECHO had to be destroyed.
One guard asked whether “the child and his mother” should be moved.
Richard replied:
“Not yet.”
Damian stood ten feet away.
The man said it directly behind him.
For three years, people had believed they could speak freely around him.
For three years, they had.
Damian returned to the guest suite looking older.
Claire had never seen rage so controlled.
“They used it,” he said.
“What?”
“My deafness.”
He sat.
“They changed meetings. Filtered information. People discussed things beside me because they believed I couldn't hear.”
Mateo entered carrying a tablet.
“Our technicians accessed the device.”
Damian looked up.
“And?”
“It has storage.”
Claire’s stomach turned.
“Storage for what?”
Mateo tapped the screen.
“Audio.”
Damian went still.
The device had not simply taken his hearing.
It had listened.
Three years.
Business meetings.
Private conversations.
Arguments.
Visitors.
Doctors.
Every person who stood near Damian believing he lived inside silence.
“Can you recover anything?” he asked.
“Some files.”
The first recording was mostly static.
Then Richard Kane’s voice came through.
“If Voss ever hears again, everything collapses.”
Another man replied.
A voice none of them recognized.
“Then make sure he never does.”
Claire looked at Damian.
He showed nothing.
The recording continued.
Richard spoke again.
“And Evelyn?”
The other man laughed.
“She died believing Damian ordered it.”
Damian grabbed the tablet.
“Again.”
Mateo replayed it.
She died believing Damian ordered it.
For the first time, Damian’s control broke.
“Evelyn.”
Claire had never heard the name.
“Who?”
Damian looked away.
“The woman I was going to marry.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
“I thought…”
“So did I.”
He stood.
“Her car went into the river six weeks after I lost my hearing.”
“Did they find her?”
“They found blood. Clothing. Personal effects.”
“No body?”
Damian looked at her.
“No.”
The recording crackled again.
The unidentified voice said:
“She left something behind. Damian can never be allowed to find it.”
The audio ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then alarms sounded downstairs.
Damian flinched at the sudden noise.
Mateo checked his radio.
“Security breach.”
“Where?”
“East service corridor.”
“Richard?”
Mateo listened.
His face changed.
“Kane is missing.”
Damian stood.
“Lock the estate.”
“Already done.”
Claire looked at Noah.
“I want to leave.”
Damian shook his head.
“You can’t.”
“He’s three.”
“That’s exactly why.”
“What does that mean?”
“Kane looked at Noah after the device came out.”
Claire remembered.
The calculation.
Damian continued.
“He knows your son exposed him.”
“I’ll go to the police.”
“You don’t know who Kane bought.”
Claire hated that he was right.
Noah came over carrying something tiny.
“Mr. Damian?”
Damian crouched.
“What?”
Noah opened his hand.
A thin black chip rested in his palm.
“It fell off the bug.”
Mateo took it.
“Memory component.”
Damian looked at him.
“Read it.”
Two hours later, Noah slept on the guest-room couch.
At one in the morning, Mateo returned.
“We recovered another file.”
Damian stood.
Mateo pressed play.
Richard’s voice.
Then the unidentified man.
A date was mentioned.
A location.
Then Evelyn.
And finally a sentence that made Damian stop breathing.
“She’s still alive.”
Claire stared at him.
The recording continued.
“Keep her away from the boy.”
Damian frowned.
“What boy?”
Static.
Then Richard’s voice answered.
“His son.”
Damian turned slowly toward Mateo.
“My what?”
The recording ended.
And before anyone could process what they had heard, a guard burst into the room.
“We found Richard’s route.”
Damian looked at him.
“Where did he go?”
The guard hesitated.
“He didn’t leave.”
Claire pulled Noah closer.
May you like
The guard looked toward the dark hallway.
“Richard Kane is still somewhere inside the mansion.”
