Chapter 3 - The Man Who Had Been Watching Claire

The mansion became a fortress before two in the morning.

Security doors locked.

Guests were evacuated.

Staff were placed in protected rooms.

Guards searched halls, cellars, service tunnels, and storage spaces.

Damian stood inside the underground security room listening to every radio transmission.

Claire noticed how strange hearing still looked on him.

A voice from one side made him turn too quickly.

A dropped key made his jaw tighten.

The alarm hurt.

He said nothing.

Noah woke and climbed into Claire’s lap.

“Why are people running?”

“They’re working.”

“At night?”

“Yes.”

Noah frowned.

“Bad job.”

Despite everything, Damian laughed.

The sound surprised him.

For three years, he had never heard himself laugh.

His expression softened.

Then one monitor flickered.

Mateo leaned forward.

“Movement near the old wine cellar.”

A hidden service passage had been opened.

It connected the cellar to the conservatory and several walls inside the east wing.

Richard Kane had spent years overseeing renovations.

He knew places inside Damian’s home that even Damian did not.

“He didn’t escape,” Claire whispered.

“He hid.”

Damian nodded.

The tragedy of betrayal was suddenly clear.

Richard had not broken into Damian’s world.

Damian had given him keys to it.

Minutes later, security found Richard’s discarded jacket inside the passage.

No Richard.

No phone.

No weapon.

But there was something else.

A photograph.

Mateo placed it on the table.

A younger Damian stood beside a dark-haired woman near the ocean.

Evelyn.

She wore a silver pendant.

Damian touched the matching pendant beneath his shirt.

“One for me. One for her.”

Noah climbed closer.

“She looks happy.”

Damian stared at the image.

“She was.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

Noah considered that.

“You should find her.”

Adults spent years complicating things children understood instantly.

Damian nodded.

“I’m trying.”

Mateo’s computer chimed.

The chip Noah found had revealed more data.

Names.

Accounts.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Employees.

Financial transfers.

A network built around Damian.

Then Mateo froze.

Claire saw her own name on the screen.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

Her apartment address.

Her previous jobs.

Noah’s birth certificate.

Photographs.

Claire leaving a grocery store.

Claire walking Noah to daycare.

Claire outside their apartment.

Her hands began shaking.

“They’ve been watching us.”

Damian looked genuinely confused.

“Why?”

Mateo opened another file.

“Your employment here was requested.”

“By who?”

“Richard Kane.”

Claire stepped backward.

She had believed getting the job had been luck.

She had needed money.

A staffing agency called.

Richard personally approved her.

Now she understood.

It had never been random.

The security screens suddenly went black.

Every one.

Then speakers crackled.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“Damian.”

Everyone froze.

Damian looked toward the ceiling.

Richard laughed softly.

“How does the world sound?”

Damian said nothing.

“Three years without hearing. Did you forget how loud betrayal can be?”

“Where are you?”

“You know better than that.”

Damian’s expression stayed cold.

Richard continued.

“Claire, are you there?”

Claire’s blood chilled.

Damian stepped toward the console.

“Leave her out of this.”

“She was in this before she ever entered your house.”

Claire stood.

“What do you want from me?”

Richard laughed.

“Ask yourself why Noah’s father chose you.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Noah’s father.

Aaron Cole.

At least that was the name she had known.

He disappeared before Noah was born.

One morning he left for work.

He never returned.

Claire spent years hating him.

“What does Aaron have to do with you?”

Richard’s voice changed.

“Aaron Cole never existed.”

Claire gripped the table.

Damian looked toward Mateo.

“Who was he?”

Richard answered.

“The man who helped put the device in your ear.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“He worked for Unit Twelve.”

“No.”

“He approached Claire because of her father.”

Claire’s knees weakened.

“My father?”

Richard laughed again.

“You really know nothing.”

The speakers went dead.

Mateo immediately searched old security personnel.

A photograph appeared.

Claire nearly collapsed.

Aaron.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Different name.

EVAN REED.

Former military communications specialist.

Private surveillance engineer.

Unit Twelve.

Damian stared.

“He built the device.”

Mateo opened a hospital photograph.

Evan Reed stood beside Richard Kane on the night Damian woke deaf.

Claire covered her mouth.

She remembered Evan cooking breakfast.

Fixing broken electronics.

Talking to Noah before Noah was born.

Had every second been a lie?

“There’s more,” Mateo said.

A later photograph loaded.

Evan stood beside Evelyn.

Alive.

Evelyn held a small child.

A boy.

Dark hair.

Around his neck hung a tiny silver pendant.

Damian stepped toward the screen.

The child looked about three.

The timestamp was eighteen months earlier.

Damian whispered:

“Evelyn.”

Then:

“The boy.”

Mateo checked the records.

“Birth date is eight months after Evelyn disappeared.”

Damian’s face broke.

Not completely.

Just enough.

“I have a son.”

Claire stared at the screen.

Two men had lost children without knowing it.

One because of a conspiracy.

One because he had been part of that conspiracy.

But Claire’s attention remained on Evan.

“Why was he with Evelyn?”

Mateo zoomed in.

A location tag remained in the metadata.

Bellmere, Vermont.

Six hours away.

Damian was already moving.

“Vehicles.”

Mateo hesitated.

“Kane is still somewhere inside the estate.”

“Then find him.”

“If this location is bait—”

“I know.”

Damian looked at the little boy on screen.

“For three years, I thought she was dead.”

His voice lowered.

“If my son is six hours away, I’m not losing another hour.”

Claire stood.

“We’re coming.”

“No.”

“Richard knows where I live. He knows Noah. He knows Evan. Whatever this is, we’re already inside it.”

Damian stared at her.

Then nodded once.

“Stay beside Mateo.”

Thirty minutes later, three black SUVs left the estate.

Rain followed them north.

Noah slept against Claire.

Damian sat opposite them, silent.

Claire watched him touch his ear occasionally.

“Does it still hurt?”

“A little.”

“What sound bothers you most?”

“Rain.”

She looked toward the window.

“You hate it?”

“I forgot how much noise it makes.”

A faint smile.

“I used to love storms.”

“You will again.”

Damian looked at her.

“You sound sure.”

“I live with a three-year-old. People adapt to noise.”

He glanced at Noah.

“That I believe.”

Hours later, morning light appeared over the mountains.

Bellmere was quiet.

Pine trees.

A lake.

Small houses.

Nothing about it looked connected to Damian Voss.

The address led them to a farmhouse near the water.

A child’s bicycle rested beside the porch.

Damian stopped breathing.

Then the front door opened.

A woman stepped outside.

Dark hair.

Thin.

Older than the photograph.

Alive.

Damian stood beside the SUV.

“Evelyn.”

She stared.

Her hand covered her mouth.

Then she whispered:

“You can hear me?”

Damian’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

She ran toward him.

For several seconds, the feared man Claire knew disappeared.

There was only Damian holding the woman he had mourned for three years.

Then a small boy appeared in the doorway.

He had Damian’s eyes.

Evelyn turned.

“Leo.”

Damian released her.

The child looked up.

“Who is he?”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“Your father.”

Damian crouched.

Noah whispered beside Claire:

“He found his boy.”

Claire wiped tears from her cheek.

“Yes.”

For ten minutes, the world almost felt kind.

Then Evelyn looked toward Claire.

Her face changed.

“You’re Claire Bennett.”

Claire froze.

“How do you know me?”

Evelyn looked toward Noah.

Then back at her.

“Because Evan told me everything.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“He’s dead.”

The words hit harder than Claire expected.

Before she could speak, Evelyn continued.

“And Richard Kane isn’t the man in charge.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“Who is?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“The same man who ordered Evan to get close to Claire.”

“Who?”

A sharp sound shattered the farmhouse window.

Everyone ducked.

Security rushed forward.

Claire grabbed Noah.

Damian pulled Leo behind the stone porch.

Another impact struck the wall.

Evelyn screamed:

“He found us!”

Damian looked at her.

“Who?”

Her face went white.

“Your brother.”

Damian froze.

“My brother died fifteen years ago.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No, Damian.”

May you like

Then she said the name nobody had spoken inside the Voss family for more than a decade.

“Julian is alive.”
