Chapter 13 - Alexander Crane

Alexander Crane did not appear in family photographs.
He appeared in accounting records.
Property transfers.
Old court settlements.
Private school tuition.
Medical payments.
Money sent quietly for decades.
Michael spread the documents across Adrian’s library.
“Grandfather had an affair before he married Grandmother.”
Adrian studied the birth certificate.
Alexander Crane.
Born eighteen months before Adrian’s father.
“He was older.”
“Yes.”
“Then why wasn’t he heir?”
“Because Grandfather never legally acknowledged him.”
Victor sat under police supervision near the window.
“He tried.”
Adrian turned.
“You knew him?”
Victor nodded.
“We all did.”
“Dad?”
“Yes.”
“And nobody mentioned him?”
“He disappeared when you were a child.”
“Why?”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“Because your grandfather paid him to.”
Michael looked at Adrian.
“Alexander spent thirty years building companies through proxies.”
“Including Vale accounts.”
“Yes.”
Samuel added, “And perhaps the black-triangle network.”
Adrian asked Victor, “Did Alexander order Michael’s plane crash?”
Victor shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“That phrase is getting old.”
“I truly don’t.”
Michael showed another page.
“Evelyn transferred almost three hundred million to an Alexander-controlled fund.”
“Almost?”
“Over twelve years.”
“What about the rest?”
“Unknown.”
Adrian looked toward Lily.
She was drawing at the end of the table while Grace watched her.
A child had become legal heir to a fortune adults had spent decades trying to steal.
Adrian suddenly hated the money.
“Freeze everything.”
Samuel nodded.
“Already moving.”
Michael asked, “And Alexander?”
“We find him.”
Detective Cole entered.
“You won’t have to.”
She placed a business card on the table.
Alexander Crane.
Chairman, Crane International.
“He contacted my office.”
Adrian stared.
“Why?”
“He wants to meet you.”
Michael laughed.
“Of course he does.”
“Where?”
“Your estate.”
Adrian looked at Cole.
“No.”
“He claims he can provide evidence against Evelyn.”
“He can provide it at a police station.”
“He refuses.”
“Then he keeps it.”
Cole studied Adrian.
“You’re learning.”
At 6 p.m., Alexander Crane arrived anyway.
No bodyguards.
No visible weapon.
He was seventy-four but looked younger.
Silver hair.
Dark eyes.
Adrian recognized something in his face.
His grandfather.
Alexander entered the dining room.
His eyes went directly to Lily.
“That must be Michael’s daughter.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“You don’t address her.”
Alexander smiled.
“You sound like your father.”
“I keep hearing that.”
Michael entered.
Alexander’s smile disappeared.
“You survived.”
“Disappointing?”
“Complicated.”
Grace took Lily upstairs.
Alexander watched until they disappeared.
Then sat.
“I assume Evelyn told you I stole the trust.”
“She suggested it.”
“She lies.”
“So does everyone in this family.”
Alexander laughed.
“Finally, something we share.”
Adrian remained standing.
“Why are you here?”
“To give back what was stolen.”
Michael stared.
“Eight hundred million dollars?”
“Seven hundred eighty-two, actually.”
Victor looked stunned.
“You have it?”
Alexander nodded.
“Most.”
“Why?”
“Because I spent twenty years collecting it.”
Adrian frowned.
“You stole money to return it?”
“No.”
Alexander looked toward Victor.
“I bought the debt your family created.”
Victor whispered, “You bastard.”
Alexander smiled.
“Our father called me worse.”
Michael asked, “Did you order the plane crash?”
“No.”
“Did you fund Charles Vale?”
“Yes.”
Celeste closed her eyes.
Adrian asked, “Why?”
“To expose Victor.”
Victor laughed.
“You funded criminals to expose me?”
“I underestimated Charles.”
“Convenient.”
Alexander looked at Adrian.
“I wanted the Moretti empire damaged.”
“Why?”
“Because our father gave everything to his legitimate sons and paid me to disappear.”
“So this is revenge.”
“It began as revenge.”
“What changed?”
Alexander looked toward the staircase where Lily had disappeared.
“Michael.”
Michael frowned.
“You.”
“Your investigation.”
Alexander leaned back.
“You were the first Moretti in decades who noticed the money didn’t belong to the people controlling it.”
“So you helped him?”
“Indirectly.”
Michael stared.
“Were you the one who warned me before the plane?”
“Yes.”
Michael went silent.
Alexander continued.
“I learned Charles intended to kill you. I sent the message that made you change seats.”
Adrian looked at Michael.
“That’s how you survived?”
Michael nodded slowly.
“I missed boarding by twelve minutes.”
The bodies were misidentified because Michael’s luggage had flown.
Alexander had saved him.
Maybe.
Adrian asked, “Then why didn’t you help afterward?”
“I did.”
Michael frowned.
Alexander smiled faintly.
“Who do you think paid Vincent to create your first safe identity?”
Michael turned to Vincent.
Vincent looked stunned.
“I received funds through a private trust.”
Alexander nodded.
“Mine.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“So you’ve been inside everything too.”
“Yes.”
“Did you order the poisoned glass?”
“No.”
“Prove it.”
Alexander opened his briefcase.
Inside were recordings.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
A complete chain leading from Evelyn to Elias.
Detective Cole examined them.
“If authentic, this could convict her.”
“They are.”
Adrian asked, “What do you want in return?”
“Nothing.”
“No one in this room does anything for nothing.”
Alexander smiled.
“Then perhaps I want something sentimental.”
“What?”
“To meet Lily.”
“No.”
Michael said it at the same time.
Alexander nodded.
“I expected that.”
He closed the briefcase.
Adrian looked at him.
“Why her?”
Alexander’s voice changed.
“Because I had a daughter once.”
Silence.
“She died at nine.”
Even Victor looked away.
Alexander continued.
“My father refused to attend her funeral.”
Adrian saw something beneath decades of anger.
Not goodness.
Pain.
Michael asked, “What happened?”
“Leukemia.”
Alexander stood.
“After she died, revenge was all I had left.”
He walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“I returned the trust assets this afternoon.”
Samuel checked his phone.
His eyes widened.
“He’s telling the truth.”
Alexander looked at Adrian.
“Every dollar I could recover is now frozen under Lily’s legal trust.”
“Why?”
“Because children should not inherit the crimes committed before they were born.”
Then he left.
Adrian watched through the window as Alexander entered his car.
Lily appeared quietly beside him.
“Who was that?”
Adrian looked down.
“A relative.”
“Bad?”
Adrian considered the question.
“I don’t know.”
Lily nodded.
“Adults are confusing.”
“That’s one thing you can always trust.”
She smiled.
Then held up her drawing.
It showed the dining room.
Adrian.
Grace.
Michael.
Lily.
Vincent.
And one additional figure standing near the service door.
Adrian pointed.
“Who is that?”
Lily’s smile disappeared.
“The man from the night before.”
Adrian stared.
“The scarred man?”
“No.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the doorway.
“He was wearing police clothes.”
Detective Cole stood there.
Lily shook her head.
“Not her.”
Then she pointed at the badge of the officer behind Cole.
Officer Daniel Price.

The man went pale.
And immediately reached for his gun.
