Chapter 9 - The Building Full of Ghosts

Emergency lights turned the corridor red.

Vincent shouted orders.

“Stay together!”

Metal doors slammed automatically across the stairwells.

Michael ran toward the nearest exit.

Locked.

Damian had taken control of the hospital’s old security system.

Adrian looked toward Lily.

She was holding Grace’s hand with both of hers.

He crouched.

“Are you scared?”

“Yes.”

“So am I.”

Lily blinked.

“You are?”

“Only stupid people never get scared.”

She almost smiled.

“Stay beside your mother.”

Damian’s voice returned.

“Adrian, Michael, Victor, Samuel, Celeste…”

He paused.

“Little Lily.”

Grace pulled her daughter closer.

Damian continued.

“You all spent years hiding pieces of the truth from one another. Tonight seemed like a good time to put everything together.”

Adrian shouted toward the ceiling.

“What do you want?”

“Room 412.”

Michael frowned.

“Why?”

“Because your daughter won’t leave this building unless all of you come.”

Grace whispered, “We can’t.”

Adrian looked at Vincent.

“Options?”

“Backup is eight minutes away, assuming Damian hasn’t blocked the road.”

Victor said, “He probably has.”

Adrian glared.

“You created him.”

Victor shook his head.

“No. His father did.”

Celeste looked at Victor.

“Our father trusted you.”

“And I trusted him.”

Damian’s voice returned.

“Room 412. Five minutes.”

They climbed the stairs.

Room 412 had once been a therapy hall.

Damian stood at the far end.

No visible weapon.

A laptop rested on a table.

Two armed men guarded him.

Adrian stopped.

“What now?”

Damian smiled.

“Now we tell the truth.”

He tapped the laptop.

A video began playing on the wall.

Old footage.

Michael at Hawthorne House seven years earlier.

He was arguing with someone outside the frame.

Then the other person stepped into view.

Victor.

Michael stared.

“You said you never found me.”

Victor remained silent.

On-screen Victor said, “Give me the files.”

Michael replied, “You killed four people trying to kill me.”

“I didn’t order the plane destroyed.”

“Then who did?”

Video Victor answered, “Charles Vale.”

Celeste gasped.

Her father.

Damian smiled.

“My father wasn’t the respectable philanthropist everyone remembers.”

Celeste whispered, “He died five years ago.”

“Conveniently.”

Adrian kept watching.

On-screen Michael refused to hand over evidence.

Another man entered.

Samuel.

Then Elias.

Michael’s face changed.

“You.”

Elias attacked him.

The video ended abruptly.

Damian looked pleased.

“History.”

Adrian asked, “Why show us?”

“Because Victor spent years telling everyone my father was responsible for everything.”

Victor snapped, “Charles was responsible.”

“For the plane, yes.”

Damian walked closer.

“But not for what happened afterward.”

Michael stared.

“Who ordered Elias to attack me?”

Damian pointed toward Samuel.

Samuel shook his head violently.

“No.”

Damian laughed.

“Not Samuel.”

Then he pointed at Victor.

Victor’s face remained blank.

Michael closed his eyes.

Adrian said, “You ordered your own nephew killed.”

Victor whispered, “I ordered Elias to retrieve the documents.”

Michael shouted, “He shot me!”

“I never told him to.”

“People like you never do. You create the situation and pretend the blood belongs to someone else.”

Damian clapped.

“Exactly.”

Adrian looked at Damian.

“Why kidnap Lily if you wanted truth?”

“I didn’t kidnap her for truth.”

There it was.

The real Damian.

Cold.

Practical.

Hungry.

“I kidnapped her because the original trust is worth almost eight hundred million dollars.”

Grace stared.

Damian smiled at Lily.

“And legally, most of it belongs to her.”

Lily whispered, “I don’t want it.”

Damian laughed.

“You’re eight. Of course you don’t.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“You’ll never touch it.”

“Maybe.”

Damian tapped the laptop again.

A legal document appeared.

“All Grace has to do is sign.”

Grace looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Transfer of custodial control.”

“To you?”

“To a holding company.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You really think they’ll sign?”

Damian smiled.

“No.”

He nodded toward one of his men.

The man dragged a woman into the room.

Everyone froze.

Adrian recognized her.

Maria Bennett.

Lily’s schoolteacher.

Grace gasped.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing yet.”

Damian’s smile disappeared.

“But Grace has spent years pretending she can protect Lily by staying quiet.”

He placed a gun against Maria’s head.

“Let’s test that philosophy.”

Grace began shaking.

“Stop.”

“Sign.”

Adrian spoke calmly.

“Grace, don’t.”

Damian looked at him.

“Would you let an innocent woman die over money?”

“It isn’t money.”

“What is it?”

“Control.”

Adrian looked at Grace.

“The moment you sign, he’ll kill witnesses anyway.”

Damian smiled.

“You learned something tonight.”

Michael slowly moved his hand toward his jacket.

Damian noticed.

“Don’t.”

Michael stopped.

Then Lily spoke.

“My mom can’t sign.”

Damian looked at her.

“What?”

Lily swallowed.

“She’s not my legal guardian.”

Grace stared.

“Lily?”

Damian frowned.

“Of course she is.”

Lily looked toward Michael.

“My dad is alive.”

Silence.

The child had noticed what every adult missed.

If Michael was legally alive, Grace’s authority over Michael’s inherited trust could be challenged.

Damian’s expression changed.

Michael smiled faintly.

“My daughter.”

Damian raised his gun.

Adrian lunged.

Everything happened at once.

Michael tackled one guard.

Vincent fired at another.

Grace pulled Maria down.

Celeste grabbed Lily.

Victor struck Damian’s arm with his cane.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Adrian slammed Damian against the table.

The laptop crashed.

Damian punched Adrian.

Adrian hit him back.

Hard.

Damian fell.

Then gunfire erupted from the corridor.

Backup.

Vincent’s men broke through.

Within sixty seconds, Damian’s guards were disarmed.

Damian lay bleeding but conscious.

Adrian stood over him.

“You lost.”

Damian laughed.

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

Damian looked at the shattered laptop.

“You still don’t have the original agreement.”

Samuel said, “We have the key.”

Damian smiled.

“To an empty vault.”

Samuel’s face went white.

“What?”

“I emptied it yesterday.”

Adrian grabbed Damian.

“Where is it?”

“Somewhere you’ll never find.”

Lily tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

Everyone looked down.

She pointed toward Damian’s wrist.

He wore an old silver watch.

The same kind visible on Michael’s wrist in the Hawthorne surveillance photograph.

Lily whispered, “That isn’t his watch.”

Michael stared.

“My watch.”

Damian’s smile vanished.

Adrian removed it.

The back panel was unusually thick.

Michael opened it.

Inside was a folded strip of microfilm.

Samuel gasped.

“The agreement.”

Damian screamed and lunged.

Vincent restrained him.

Lily looked at Adrian.

“Adults don’t notice little things.”

Adrian crouched.

“No.”

He smiled for the first time all night.

“They really don’t.”

But their victory lasted only seconds.

A police siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Vincent’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

Adrian asked, “What is it?”

Vincent lowered the phone.

“The state police are here.”

“So?”

“They have a warrant.”

“For Damian?”

Vincent shook his head.

“For you.”

Adrian stared.

“What charge?”

May you like

Vincent looked toward the poisoned glass evidence.

“Attempted murder of Celeste Vale.”
