Chapter 13 - The Girl They Tried to Silence

By Monday morning, my photograph was everywhere.
Not because I'd done anything remarkable.
Not because anyone cared about the truth.
But because someone had sold a carefully edited story to a celebrity gossip website.
The headline read:
MAFIA BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET WAITRESS: CHARITY GALA ROMANCE HIDING FINANCIAL SCANDAL?
The article contained photographs of me entering Adriano's suite, leaving his mansion, and visiting the bank.
It described my mother as a financially troubled former accountant.
It implied my father had stolen money from a charity.
And it suggested Adriano had paid me to help him conceal his family's involvement.
I read the article in disbelief.
Then I saw the comments.
She's obviously after his money.
These rich men always find some innocent-looking girl.
Her entire family sounds suspicious.
My hands began shaking.
People who had never met my mother were discussing her illness as though it were a publicity stunt.
People who had never met my father were calling him a thief.
And somebody had published our former apartment building's address.
I turned off my phone.
For five minutes, I sat in silence.
Then I turned it back on.
I wasn't going to disappear because strangers were cruel.
My best friend, Tessa Morgan, arrived carrying coffee and two enormous bags of groceries.
Tessa worked as a freelance investigative journalist.
She'd known me since college and had witnessed every disastrous attempt I'd ever made at dating.
When she saw the article, she swore loudly enough to frighten Marco in the hallway.
"This is targeted."
I nodded.
"Vanessa."
"Probably. But we need proof."
She sat beside me.
"Eliza, whoever is behind this wants you frightened and isolated."
"They're doing a pretty good job."
"Then let's disappoint them."
I looked up.
"What do you mean?"
"Don't respond emotionally online. We investigate the claims and give people facts."
I hesitated.
"My family has spent seventeen years hiding."
"Then maybe the story needs to be told by someone who isn't trying to destroy you."
At noon, Tessa and I met Detective Ruiz.
We supplied screenshots, the anonymous messages, the warehouse address, and copies of the damaging article.
Ruiz informed us that investigators had identified suspicious connections between Blackthorn Medical Logistics and several Harrington-controlled companies.
She also confirmed that the transaction involving Adriano's business was being examined.
I swallowed.
"Do you think he was involved?"
"That's what the evidence has to establish."
I looked down.
"He's not perfect."
Ruiz's expression softened slightly.
"No one is. But neither love nor dislike is evidence."
I knew she was right.
I hated hearing it.
That afternoon, Vanessa called me.
I almost didn't answer.
Curiosity won.
"Enjoying your fifteen minutes of fame?" she asked.
"What do you want?"
"To save you further embarrassment."
"How generous."
She laughed.
"Adriano has a history, Eliza. A complicated one. You really think you know him?"
"I know enough about you."
"Careful."
I stood by the window.
"Why did you want the key?"
Silence.
Then her voice cooled.
"Because your father stole something that belonged to my family."
"Your father's foundation stole from sick people."
"Allegedly."
"My mother has the records."
Vanessa inhaled sharply.
I hadn't intended to tell her that.
But I was tired of being spoken to like a frightened child.
"Listen carefully," she said. "You have no idea what you're getting involved in."
"Then enlighten me."
She ended the call.
Thirty seconds later, another message arrived.
A photograph of Tessa entering her office.
My stomach dropped.
We relocated Tessa to a safer place with her agreement.
She was furious.
Not frightened.
Furious.
"These people have no idea who they're dealing with."
"Tessa, please don't do anything reckless."
She looked at me.
"You're giving me that speech?"
Fair point.
Adriano called twice that evening.
I didn't answer.
On the third attempt, he left a voicemail.
"Eliza, I understand why you need distance. Reynolds is independently reviewing the Blackthorn payment. You deserve a complete explanation, not another assurance. Please be careful."
I listened to the message three times.
Then I cried.
Because even when I was angry with him, I missed him.
Two days later, the harassment became worse.
An edited video circulated showing my father entering a bank years earlier.
A narrator claimed he'd been moving stolen charitable funds.
Tessa identified the original recording.
It had been taken out of context.
The full footage showed Daniel meeting an external auditor.
We published the correction through her reporting network, providing the complete recording and supporting documents.
It helped.
But the damage had already spread.
I received dozens of messages accusing me of manipulating Adriano.
Then one arrived from an anonymous account.
Want to know what your boyfriend did three years ago? Ask him about the Eastbridge contract.
My stomach tightened.
Eastbridge.
The medical center currently treating my mother.
I immediately called Dr. Patel's office.
She confirmed that Adriano's foundation had made donations to the hospital's patient access program, but he had no role in my mother's medical decisions.
I felt relieved.
For approximately six seconds.
Then Tessa called.
"Eliza, I found something."
"What?"
"The Eastbridge contract predates your mother's treatment."
"And?"
"Three years ago, a Costello subsidiary purchased a portfolio of properties from Harrington Capital."
I closed my eyes.
"That's the deal Adriano mentioned."
"Yes. But one of those properties housed Blackthorn's old records division."
I sat down.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the transaction may have transferred records Lorenzo wanted hidden."
Before I could respond, Tessa added something worse.
"And Eliza? The person who signed the original sale agreement wasn't Adriano."
"Who was it?"
"Lorenzo Vale. Acting under delegated authority."
I grabbed my coat.
For the first time since leaving Adriano's mansion, I knew I had to see him.
But when I arrived, the front gates stood open.
Police vehicles filled the driveway.
Marco approached me.
His expression was grim.
"Where's Adriano?"
He looked toward the house.
"Inside."
"What's happening?"
Marco swallowed.
"Lorenzo filed a criminal complaint accusing Adriano of ordering the destruction of Evergreen's original records."
I stared at him.
May you like
"And the police?"
"They're here with a warrant."
