Chapter 15 - The Wedding That Never Happened

New York loves three things.
Money.
Scandal.
And watching wealthy people destroy one another in public.
Lorenzo Vale understood that better than anyone.
Within twenty-four hours, his supposed engagement to Vanessa Harrington dominated every society column in the city.
The announcement described their relationship as a union between two influential philanthropic families.
I nearly choked on my coffee.
"Lorenzo is old enough to be her father!"
Tessa sat across from me, scrolling through the article.
"Apparently, romance has no age limit when several billion dollars in disputed assets are involved."
I stared at her.
"You're enjoying this."
"I'm a journalist. This is an extraordinary amount of material."
Then her expression grew serious.
"The engagement isn't about love, Eliza."
"I noticed."
"It's about consolidating control over their businesses before the Evergreen investigation reaches the original financial records."
I looked at the newspaper photograph.
Vanessa was wearing an enormous diamond ring.
She was also standing beside the man who had apparently betrayed Adriano's father.
"What happens if they get married?"
"Nothing automatically. But their companies are announcing a restructuring alongside the wedding. It may complicate the tracing of disputed funds."
My phone vibrated.
Adriano.
Can you meet me at Reynolds's office? We've found the missing bank recording.
The bank footage showed a maintenance contractor entering the private storage area several hours before the official inventory.
He used a temporary security credential.
The man carried a small black case when he left.
Detective Ruiz had already identified him as a former Blackthorn employee.
More importantly, he'd been seen entering Lorenzo Vale's office the following day.
"The fourth item," I whispered.
Reynolds nodded.
"We believe the original medical file was removed before the box was formally opened."
Adriano stared at the footage.
"Can we recover it?"
"The police are pursuing the evidence. We also have the duplicate your mother preserved."
I turned toward him.
"Then why would Lorenzo risk stealing the original?"
"Because there may be information inside that isn't present in the duplicate."
Three days before the announced wedding, Tessa received an unexpected call.
A woman claiming to be Vanessa's former personal assistant wanted to meet.
Her name was Olivia Grant.
We arranged the meeting at Reynolds's office.
Olivia arrived wearing sunglasses despite the rain.
She looked frightened.
"I worked for Vanessa for six years," she said.
"Why contact us now?" Tessa asked.
"Because I heard her arguing with Lorenzo."
"About what?"
Olivia twisted the strap of her handbag.
"She wants to cancel the wedding."
I blinked.
"Then why doesn't she?"
"Because Lorenzo threatened to expose her role in the Evergreen cover-up."
My stomach tightened.
"What role?"
Olivia looked toward me.
"Vanessa knew your father was being held in a private safe house. She helped arrange the payments."
Silence.
Then Olivia placed a small recording device on the table.
"I copied this before resigning."
Reynolds asked whether she would provide a formal statement to investigators.
She nodded.
"I'm tired of being afraid of them."
The recording contained a furious argument.
Vanessa accused Lorenzo of using her.
Lorenzo threatened to release correspondence tying her to efforts to locate and intimidate Daniel Brennan.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
You promised nobody would find out what happened to Vittorio.
Lorenzo replied:
Then stop asking questions you already know the answers to.
It wasn't a complete confession.
But combined with the other records, it strengthened the case considerably.
Detective Ruiz took Olivia's statement.
An investigation into the intimidation campaign widened.
And Lorenzo continued smiling for cameras.
The wedding ceremony was scheduled for Saturday evening at the Harrington family's private estate.
We had no intention of attending.
Until Vanessa contacted me directly.
"Eliza."
I nearly ended the call.
Then she spoke.
"I need your help."
I laughed in disbelief.
"Seriously?"
"Please."
Something in her voice stopped me.
She was crying.
"I know you hate me."
"You threatened my mother."
"I know."
"You tried to destroy my family."
"I know."
"Then what could you possibly want?"
Her voice broke.
"Lorenzo has the original file. He's planning to destroy it after the wedding."
I stood.
"Where?"
"In his private office. There's a locked cabinet behind the fireplace."
I exchanged a glance with Adriano.
"Why are you telling me this?"
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
"Because he just told me that after we marry, nobody will ever hear from Isabella Costello again."
The following evening, Detective Ruiz coordinated with the appropriate authorities to pursue the evidence.
Olivia provided additional documentation supporting her statement.
Reynolds remained in contact with Adriano.
I stayed at the hospital with my parents.
At six thirty, photographs began appearing online from the wedding venue.
Hundreds of guests.
Thousands of roses.
A towering white cake.
Vanessa walked down the aisle in a custom gown.
Lorenzo waited beneath an enormous floral arch.
The ceremony began.
Then, according to later witness accounts, several investigators arrived with court-authorized documents.
The music stopped.
The officiant stepped aside.
Vanessa removed her engagement ring.
And Lorenzo Vale's carefully planned wedding came to an abrupt end.
I was watching the evening news when Adriano entered my mother's hospital room.
His expression was unreadable.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Lorenzo has been taken in for questioning. Investigators recovered a sealed medical file from his office."
I stood.
"The original?"
"Possibly. It's being authenticated."
My father covered his mouth.
My mother began crying.
Then Adriano handed me his phone.
A photograph filled the screen.
The recovered file contained a handwritten statement signed by Vittorio Costello shortly before his death.
My heart began pounding as I read the first sentence.
If anything happens to me, my son must know that the money was never the real reason.
I looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Adriano's face had gone pale.
He turned to my father.
"Daniel, there's another name in this statement."
My father stood slowly.
"Whose?"
Adriano swallowed.
"Conrad Harrington wasn't just stealing from Evergreen."
He looked at me.
"He was financing a medical acquisition that my father had refused to approve."
May you like
And hidden beneath Vittorio's signature was the name of a hospital executive who had been protecting Conrad's operations for years.
The same executive who had recently authorized my mother's transfer to Eastbridge Medical Center.
