Chapter 4 - What Was Hidden Behind the Nursery Wall

Room 814 did not technically exist.

Not on the mansion blueprint.

Not on the security system.

Not in the renovation records.

It was the number Elena had jokingly given the nursery because Ethan had been born on August 14.

After her death, Adrian sealed the room.

He told himself it was because the boys had outgrown it.

The truth was simpler.

He could not stand the smell of Elena’s perfume still trapped in the curtains.

Now he stood outside the door with Claire.

The small key fit.

The lock clicked.

Neither moved.

Claire finally asked, “Are you ready?”

“No.”

He opened the door anyway.

Dust covered everything.

A wooden crib.

A faded rocking chair.

Boxes of baby clothes.

Claire noticed Adrian’s breathing change.

He walked toward the wall beside the crib.

“The camera,” she said.

Adrian looked up.

An old nanny camera remained mounted above the bookshelf.

He had forgotten it existed.

Marcus connected a portable system.

The camera had no active network connection.

But inside its local storage was one archived file.

Dated four years earlier.

8:14 p.m.

Adrian pressed play.

Elena appeared.

Alive.

She was sitting exactly where Claire now stood.

“Adrian,” the recording began.

His hand tightened.

“If you’re seeing this, something went wrong.”

Claire looked away, giving him privacy without leaving.

Elena continued.

“Richard is using your organization. I tried to collect enough evidence to expose him, but he knows.”

Adrian’s face became stone.

“I asked Victor Sloane for help because I couldn’t trust anyone inside the family.”

The recording flickered.

“There is a ledger. Richard thinks I destroyed it.”

Elena looked toward the camera.

“I didn’t.”

She reached beneath the nursery floorboard.

Adrian immediately crossed the room.

He lifted the same board.

A metal box rested underneath.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Names.

Payments.

Politicians.

Police.

Judges.

Private contractors.

And one name Adrian never expected.

Marcus Vale.

Claire saw it at the same moment.

The head of Adrian’s security.

His closest surviving friend.

Marcus, standing directly behind them, slowly reached for his weapon.

Claire moved first.

“Adrian!”

Adrian turned.

Marcus’s gun came up.

But Claire slammed the metal box into his wrist.

The weapon fired into the ceiling.

Adrian tackled him.

They crashed into the dresser.

Marcus fought desperately.

Adrian struck him once.

Twice.

Then pinned him against the floor.

“Why?”

Marcus laughed through blood.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Richard?”

“Richard was useful.”

Adrian froze.

“Was?”

Marcus smiled.

“He’s dead.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Adrian’s mind raced.

“Then who’s running it?”

Marcus looked past him.

At Claire.

“No.”

Claire went still.

Marcus laughed again.

“Her mother wasn’t only Victor’s wife.”

Claire stared.

“What are you talking about?”

“She built the network.”

Claire’s face emptied.

“No.”

“Ask what her real name was.”

Adrian tightened his grip.

“Enough.”

Marcus suddenly bit down.

Claire recognized the movement.

“Adrian!”

Too late.

Marcus convulsed.

Poison capsule.

Within seconds, he stopped moving.

The room became silent.

Claire backed away.

“My mother was a school secretary.”

Adrian picked up the ledger.

“Maybe that wasn’t the whole truth.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“She made lunches. She volunteered at church. She hated driving at night.”

“She may have had another life.”

Claire turned on him.

“Like me?”

Adrian stopped.

The accusation was fair.

Before he could answer, alarms sounded.

Not perimeter alarms.

Fire alarms.

“Dad!”

Ethan’s voice came through Adrian’s phone.

Adrian ran.

Smoke already filled the west hallway.

The attack had begun while they were distracted.

Claire followed.

They reached the boys’ rooms.

Empty.

Adrian’s face changed.

“Ethan!”

No answer.

Claire noticed a small shoe near the service staircase.

“This way.”

They ran downstairs.

In the kitchen, Noah appeared beneath the table.

Claire dropped to her knees.

“Where’s Ethan?”

Noah was sobbing.

“He told me to hide.”

“Where did he go?”

“The man took him.”

Adrian went still.

“What man?”

“The security man.”

Claire and Adrian looked at each other.

Daniel Ross was dead.

Marcus was dead.

So another traitor remained.

Adrian crouched beside Noah.

“What did the man say?”

Noah sniffed.

“He said Ethan had to come because his mom was waiting.”

Adrian’s face lost all color.

Claire whispered, “Elena.”

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman spoke.

“Adrian.”

He stopped breathing.

Four years vanished in one syllable.

“Elena?”

Claire watched his face collapse.

“Yes,” the woman whispered.

Adrian gripped the counter.

“Where are you?”

“With Ethan.”

His voice hardened instantly.

“If you hurt him—”

“I would never hurt our son.”

“Then bring him home.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if I return, they’ll kill all of us.”

Adrian struggled to speak.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then Elena said something that turned the entire investigation upside down.

“Claire Bennett.”

Claire stared.

Adrian slowly looked at her.

Elena continued.

“Whatever she told you, Adrian, don’t believe her.”

The line went dead.

May you like

And Claire realized the person they had spent four years trying to find had just accused her of being the enemy.
