Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Came Back

Adrian locked Claire in the library.

Not because he believed Elena.

Not completely.

Because Ethan was missing.

And Adrian no longer trusted anyone completely.

Claire stood by the window as two guards waited outside.

An hour later, the door opened.

Adrian entered alone.

“Where’s Noah?”

“With three guards I personally selected.”

“Good.”

Adrian placed Claire’s file on the table.

“Tell me everything.”

“I already did.”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

That was when he was most dangerous.

“You told me pieces.”

Claire looked at him.

“So did everyone else.”

“Elena says you’re dangerous.”

“She doesn’t know me.”

“She knew your name.”

That hurt because it was true.

Adrian continued.

“She disappeared four years ago. You entered my home three weeks ago. Your father warned you. Your mother was involved. And now my son is gone.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“You think I took Ethan?”

“I think I need the truth.”

Claire stared at him for a long time.

Then she nodded.

“My mother’s real name was Catherine Sloane.”

Adrian said nothing.

“I found another name when I was nineteen. Catherine Bennett.”

“That’s why you chose Bennett.”

“Yes.”

“She worked for Richard?”

“I don’t know.”

“You trained in protective tactics because of her?”

“Yes.”

Claire walked toward the fireplace.

“After she died, I found a locked box. There were passports. Cash. Training manuals. Photographs of men I didn’t recognize.”

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“Because one photograph showed a police captain having dinner with my father.”

Adrian understood.

“So you disappeared.”

“I changed my name. Went to school. Tried to become ordinary.”

“And the tactical academy?”

“I wanted to understand what my parents had been involved in.”

Claire swallowed.

“Then my partner died during a protection contract, and I walked away.”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“You really became a nanny.”

“Yes.”

“Why children?”

“They don’t ask you to become dangerous for them.”

Adrian almost laughed at the irony.

“You fought three armed men.”

“Because they came after your sons.”

Silence.

Then Adrian unlocked the door.

Claire blinked.

“What are you doing?”

“Trusting the only person who has saved both my children this week.”

His phone buzzed.

A location.

Elena had sent it.

An abandoned lakeside property eighty miles north.

Adrian assembled a team.

Claire insisted on going.

“No.”

“You need me.”

“For what?”

“If Elena thinks I’m involved, seeing me may make her reveal why.”

“That could get you killed.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You hired me to protect your children.”

“You’re not their bodyguard.”

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“I’m their nanny.”

For some reason, that mattered more.

They reached the property after midnight.

Adrian entered first.

Claire behind him.

Inside, Ethan sat at a kitchen table.

Alive.

Adrian nearly broke.

“Dad!”

Ethan ran into his arms.

Adrian held him so tightly the boy laughed through tears.

Then a woman stepped from the shadows.

Elena.

Four years older.

Thinner.

Alive.

Adrian could not move.

Neither could she.

“Adrian.”

He crossed the room.

For one second, Claire thought he would embrace her.

Instead he stopped three feet away.

“You let me bury you.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“You let our sons grow up without their mother.”

“I watched them.”

“That doesn’t count.”

“I know.”

“You knew Noah cried for you every night for a year?”

Elena broke.

“I know.”

Adrian’s anger cracked.

He grabbed her.

She collapsed against him.

Claire turned away.

Whatever Elena had done, the grief in that room belonged to them.

Minutes later, Elena explained.

Richard Mercer had not been the true architect.

Catherine Bennett—Claire’s mother—had discovered the network years earlier while working as an intelligence analyst.

She had infiltrated it.

Not built it.

Marcus had lied.

Elena had worked with Catherine and Victor to expose Richard.

When the assassination plan became unavoidable, Catherine volunteered to drive Elena’s vehicle while Elena escaped.

Catherine believed her daughter would be targeted if the network survived.

Claire listened with tears rolling silently down her face.

“My mother saved you.”

“Yes,” Elena whispered.

“Then why did you tell Adrian not to trust me?”

“Because someone sent me photographs of you meeting Victor.”

“That was my father.”

“I didn’t know that.”

Elena looked ashamed.

“I thought you had been sent to finish what Richard started.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

They had both been wrong about her.

Then Ethan interrupted.

“Mom?”

Everyone turned.

“I heard the man on the phone.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“What man?”

“The one who brought me here.”

“He said you had to give him something tomorrow.”

Elena went pale.

“What exactly did he say?”

Ethan thought.

“He said, ‘Bring the ledger to the old hotel or the next Mercer child disappears.’”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

Claire asked, “What old hotel?”

Elena answered.

“The Grand Bellmont.”

Adrian knew it.

His family had owned it thirty years earlier.

Abandoned now.

“What time?”

“Noon.”

Claire looked toward the windows.

“We have eight hours.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“The ledger isn’t what they actually want.”

She walked toward an old suitcase and removed a photograph.

It showed Catherine Bennett standing beside Richard Mercer and one other man.

Adrian stared at the third figure.

His father.

Thomas Mercer.

Dead for sixteen years.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“Richard wasn’t the beginning.”

Adrian’s hands slowly curled.

“Then who was?”

Elena’s answer was almost a whisper.

“Your father.”

May you like

And according to Elena, Thomas Mercer might not have died sixteen years ago after all.
