Chapter 13 - The Storm Over Voss Lake

The storm arrived at 9:18 p.m.

Rain hammered the mansion windows.

Wind bent trees along the lake.

At 9:31, power failed.

Backup generators activated.

At 9:34, they failed too.

Nikolai stood in the security room illuminated by emergency lights.

“Manual sabotage.”

Dmitri nodded.

“Three generators. Separate systems. Someone prepared this.”

Vera looked at the map.

“Water pumps?”

“Why?” Nikolai asked.

“My irrigation controls run on a separate agricultural backup.”

Dmitri checked.

“She’s right.”

The estate’s landscaping network remained operational.

Vera smiled grimly.

“Then I have an idea.”

Infrared security cameras were failing one by one.

But buried beneath the lawn were hundreds of irrigation heads.

Vera opened the control panel.

“What are you doing?”

“Making rain worse.”

She activated every irrigation zone surrounding the northern property line.

Powerful sprinklers erupted.

Dmitri stared.

“How does this help?”

“Anyone crossing wet ground leaves tracks.”

Nikolai looked impressed despite himself.

Vera activated landscape lights powered by the same agricultural backup.

Suddenly the grounds were visible in broken islands of light.

Movement near the hedge.

Three figures.

Security intercepted them.

No shots.

No dramatic battle.

Two surrendered.

One escaped.

Then alarms sounded near the greenhouse.

Nikolai looked at Vera.

“Stay here.”

“No chance.”

They ran.

Inside the greenhouse, glass rattled beneath the storm.

A rear door stood open.

Someone had entered.

On Vera’s workbench lay another envelope.

Nikolai stopped her before she touched it.

Inside was a single card.

LOOK AT THE LAKE.

They turned.

Beyond the greenhouse windows, a boat moved across dark water.

Its lights blinked once.

Twice.

Then disappeared.

Dmitri’s radio came alive.

“Sir, east dock breached.”

Nikolai cursed.

A distraction.

The men at the fence were never the real attack.

Adrian had approached by water.

Vera’s satellite phone vibrated.

Unknown call.

She answered.

“Hello, Vera.”

Adrian.

Nikolai reached for the phone.

She stepped away.

“What do you want?”

“To demonstrate something.”

“What?”

“That Nikolai still cannot protect everyone.”

Vera looked toward the mansion.

Then she understood.

“Miriam.”

The housekeeper.

Adrian laughed softly.

“You learn quickly.”

Vera’s blood ran cold.

“Where is she?”

“Safe for the moment.”

Nikolai’s expression became murderous.

Adrian continued.

“Tell Nikolai to come to the old dock alone.”

“No.”

“Then Miriam leaves with us.”

Vera looked at Nikolai.

He shook his head.

Not permission.

Warning.

She spoke into the phone.

“You keep making the same mistake.”

“Which one?”

“You think people are things.”

Silence.

“You thought I was Nikolai’s possession. Peter was your tool. Rourke was disposable. Now Miriam is another object.”

“And your point?”

“People choose.”

Vera looked toward the greenhouse door.

Miriam appeared.

Wet.

Shaken.

But alive.

Behind her stood Jason and two guards.

Adrian fell silent.

Vera smiled.

“You chose the wrong housekeeper.”

Miriam snatched the phone.

“And you,” the older woman shouted, “ruined my good coat.”

Even Nikolai looked surprised.

Miriam had escaped when Adrian’s men underestimated her, triggering a service alarm before running toward the greenhouse.

Adrian disconnected.

For one second, victory filled the room.

Then Dmitri’s radio crackled.

“Vehicle approaching main gate.”

“Identity?”

A pause.

“Peter Halden.”

Vera frowned.

“Peter is at the safe house.”

Everyone froze.

The guard’s voice returned.

“The driver says he’s Peter.”

Nikolai’s face hardened.

“Do not open the gate.”

Too late.

A massive explosion of sparks struck the electronic gate—not an explosive blast, but an electrical overload.

The lock failed.

The vehicle rolled through.

Driver door opened.

The man who stepped out was not Peter.

Caleb Rourke identified him from the security feed.

“Adrian.”

For the first time, the man behind every photograph and message had entered the Voss estate himself.

And he was walking directly toward the greenhouse.
