Chapter 14 - Betrayal Beneath the Glass

Adrian Helian did not look like a monster.

That was the first thing Vera thought.

He looked ordinary.

Expensive coat.

Gray eyes.

Neatly styled hair.

A face that could belong to an attorney, surgeon, or businessman.

Perhaps that was why he had survived so long.

People expected evil to announce itself.

Adrian simply walked through the rain.

Security moved.

Nikolai stopped them.

“Wait.”

Vera looked at him.

Adrian raised both hands.

“I’m unarmed.”

Dmitri spoke through the radio.

“Scanners confirm no visible weapon.”

“That doesn’t make him safe,” Vera said.

“No,” Nikolai agreed.

Adrian stopped outside the greenhouse.

Rain streamed down the glass between them.

“May I come in?”

Nikolai almost laughed.

“No.”

Adrian smiled.

“Still dramatic.”

“You entered my property.”

“Because we should end this.”

“Agreed.”

Adrian’s eyes shifted toward Vera.

“There she is.”

Nikolai moved slightly.

Vera noticed.

So did Adrian.

His smile widened.

“Remarkable.”

“What?” Vera asked.

“I spent months wondering whether photographs exaggerated it.”

“Exaggerated what?”

“The way he changes when you’re nearby.”

Nikolai’s voice became cold.

“Say what you came to say.”

Adrian looked back at him.

“The evidence you released caused problems.”

“Good.”

“You think regulators frighten me?”

“No. Losing control frightens you.”

For the first time, Adrian’s smile weakened.

Vera saw it.

So did Nikolai.

Adrian had built his power on making other people afraid.

He had never expected anyone to study him in return.

“You murdered Anton,” Nikolai said.

“I was young.”

“That is your defense?”

“No. My explanation.”

“You were twenty-eight.”

“Still younger than you are now.”

Nikolai took one step closer.

Vera touched his arm.

He stopped.

Adrian noticed.

Again.

“You see?” Adrian said. “That. She regulates you.”

“No,” Vera replied. “He chooses.”

Adrian ignored her.

“Nikolai, give me the historical records. Withdraw the Marrow evidence. I disappear.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the full offer.”

“I don’t care.”

Adrian’s eyes shifted toward the mansion.

“You should.”

Lights suddenly returned.

Every greenhouse lamp illuminated at once.

Then the security monitors rebooted.

Dmitri’s face appeared on a tablet.

“We found it.”

“What?” Vera asked.

“The final breach.”

A name appeared.

Estate maintenance supervisor.

Samuel Trent.

Vera knew him.

Quiet.

Reliable.

Employed eight years.

He had access to generators, service tunnels and greenhouse keys.

Adrian smiled.

“Samuel is very talented.”

Nikolai’s expression hardened.

“Where is he?”

Dmitri answered.

“Basement.”

Security converged.

Samuel attempted to escape through a utility corridor.

He was captured without injury.

The betrayal was finally visible.

Not Dmitri.

Not Miriam.

Not Emmett.

Samuel.

He had modified access logs.

Moved cameras.

Placed microphones.

Opened doors for Adrian’s people.

And for eight years, Nikolai had trusted him.

Adrian watched through the glass.

“You see the problem with loyalty?”

Nikolai’s answer came instantly.

“No. I see the problem with choosing the wrong person.”

Adrian’s smile faded.

Vera opened the greenhouse door.

Nikolai caught her arm lightly.

“What are you doing?”

“Ending this.”

She stepped beneath the covered entry, still several feet from Adrian.

“You wanted proof that I mattered.”

Adrian looked amused.

“You provided plenty.”

“No. You wanted proof because you needed to believe caring makes people weak.”

His expression cooled.

“Spare me philosophy.”

“But you came here personally.”

She glanced toward the cameras.

“Why?”

Adrian said nothing.

“Because your network is collapsing. Rourke turned. Peter survived. Samuel was caught. Your intermediary was arrested.”

Nikolai understood what Vera was doing.

Making Adrian speak.

Cameras recorded everything.

“You came because you need control back.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You think a greenhouse worker understands me?”

“Groundskeeper.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m a groundskeeper.”

Vera smiled faintly.

“And yes.”

Adrian stepped closer.

Security tensed.

Vera did not move.

“You’re afraid,” she said.

His expression finally cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Behind them, Dmitri spoke quietly.

“We have audio.”

Adrian realized.

Too late.

His admission about Samuel.

His reference to the evidence.

His presence during an active criminal investigation.

Everything recorded.

Sirens sounded beyond the gates.

Not Nikolai’s people.

Federal vehicles.

Adrian looked toward the road.

Then at Nikolai.

“You called them?”

Nikolai shook his head.

“Vera did.”

Adrian stared at her.

She lifted the satellite phone he had once mocked as another symbol of Nikolai’s control.

“I discovered the emergency button is useful.”

For the first time in the entire ordeal, Adrian Helian looked genuinely surprised.

But as agents entered the property, he smiled again.

“You think this ends with me?”

Vera looked at Nikolai.

Then back at Adrian.

“No.”

She said it calmly.

May you like

“It ends when we stop being afraid of you.”

And for a man who had built his life on fear, there could be no greater defeat.
