Chapter 12 - Marcus Took the One Thing Elena Feared Losing

Noah disappeared at 3:16 the next afternoon.

It took less than forty seconds.

Mrs. Patterson had insisted on returning home to collect medication.

Elena did not want Noah leaving the safe apartment, so Gabriel sent two men with Mrs. Patterson.

That should have been enough.

It wasn't.

Derek called Noah directly.

From downstairs.

“Your grandmother figure forgot her blue bag,” he told him.

Noah knew Mrs. Patterson used a blue medical bag.

He walked toward the elevator before Elena noticed.

By the time she reached the hall, the elevator doors were closing.

“Noah!”

He heard her.

“Mom?”

Elena ran.

Too late.

She took the stairs.

Seven floors.

Barely breathing.

When she reached the lobby, she saw Derek guiding Noah toward a waiting car.

“Noah!”

Derek turned.

Noah stopped.

“Mom?”

Elena ran.

A black SUV pulled between them.

Two men stepped out.

Elena screamed.

Gabriel's guards came from the side.

Chaos.

Derek pushed Noah into the SUV.

The vehicle accelerated.

Elena reached the street seconds later.

Gone.

“No!”

She stood in traffic screaming his name.

Dominic reached her moments later.

Elena hit him.

Once.

Twice.

Not because it was his fault.

Because grief needed somewhere to go.

“You promised!”

Dominic didn't stop her.

“You promised he'd be safe!”

“I know.”

“My son!”

“I know.”

She collapsed against him.

Dominic held her.

Not like a mafia boss.

Not like a billionaire.

Like a man witnessing another person's world end.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

Dominic answered.

“Where is he?”

Marcus said, “You know what I want.”

“If the boy is hurt—”

“He isn't.”

Elena grabbed the phone.

“Noah!”

“Mom!”

His voice.

Alive.

Scared.

Elena nearly broke.

“Baby, listen to me. I'm coming.”

“Mom, Dad said—”

The line changed.

Marcus returned.

“Archive.”

Elena's face hardened.

“Take it.”

Dominic looked at her.

Marcus laughed.

“Dominic needs to provide the complete authentication and original files.”

“Fine.”

“Elena—” Dominic began.

She turned on him.

“Give it to him.”

“Elena.”

“My son.”

Dominic's voice softened.

“If Marcus gets that archive, thousands of people become vulnerable.”

“I don't care!”

The words exploded from her.

Then silence.

Elena's breathing shook.

“I don't care about your empire. I don't care about Boston. I don't care about your father or your brother or any of this.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I care about Noah.”

Dominic nodded.

“I know.”

“Then give him what he wants.”

Marcus listened.

Finally he said, “Old Crane Hotel. Midnight.”

Then hung up.

Elena walked away.

Dominic did not follow immediately.

Agent Sloan did.

“She isn't wrong.”

Dominic looked at her.

Sloan continued.

“But neither is your hesitation.”

Dominic stared through the windows.

“If Marcus gets control of the archive, he can erase evidence.”

“And use the rest.”

“Yes.”

“Can you copy it?”

“Already did.”

Sloan's eyes narrowed.

Dominic looked at her.

“You thought I would keep one copy?”

For the first time Sloan almost smiled.

“Then give him the original access.”

“He'll check.”

“Let him.”

Dominic understood.

They would hand Marcus access to a live server.

But the evidence had already been duplicated into federal custody.

Marcus would believe he had won.

Until arrests began.

There was another problem.

Noah.

Elena reentered.

Her eyes were red.

But controlled.

“Tell me the plan.”

Dominic looked at her.

“You're staying—”

She raised one finger.

He stopped.

Gabriel coughed.

Dominic changed direction.

“You're coming.”

“Good.”

The old Crane Hotel had been closed for renovation.

Forty stories.

Empty rooms.

Dark ballroom.

Perfect place for Marcus.

At 11:40 p.m., Elena entered wearing a small microphone beneath her coat.

Dominic walked beside her.

He was stronger now.

Still healing.

But the man from the basement was gone.

Marcus waited in the ballroom.

Noah sat in a chair beside Derek.

Unharmed.

Elena's entire body leaned toward him.

“Noah!”

“Mom!”

Marcus raised a hand.

“Not yet.”

Dominic's voice became ice.

“Release him.”

“Archive first.”

Dominic held up a laptop.

“All of it.”

Marcus smiled.

“Password.”

Dominic entered the first sequence.

Then the second.

The archive opened.

Marcus stared.

Decades of Crane secrets.

His life's obsession.

Finally his.

He gestured.

Derek released Noah.

Noah ran.

Elena dropped to her knees and caught him.

She held him so tightly he complained.

“Mom, I can't breathe.”

She laughed and cried simultaneously.

“Sorry.”

Behind them, Marcus studied the archive.

Then his expression changed.

Files began disappearing.

“What did you do?”

Dominic said nothing.

Marcus looked at the screen.

FEDERAL EVIDENCE PRESERVATION LOCK ACTIVE.

His face drained.

“No.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Agent Sloan entered with federal officers.

“Marcus Crane!”

Marcus backed away.

Derek immediately raised his hands.

Marcus stared at Dominic.

“You gave them everything?”

“Yes.”

“Our father built this for us.”

“No.”

Dominic looked at him.

“He built it around us.”

Marcus laughed in disbelief.

“You'd destroy the family because of her?”

His eyes moved to Elena.

Dominic followed his gaze.

Then answered.

“No.”

A pause.

“I destroyed what our father made because it should have ended years ago.”

Marcus reached inside his coat.

Officers raised weapons.

“Don't!” Elena screamed.

Dominic stepped forward.

Marcus's hand emerged.

Not with a weapon.

With an old photograph.

Two boys.

One nine.

One twelve.

Standing beside each other beneath a tree.

Dominic stared.

Marcus looked at it.

Then at his brother.

“You really think you can become something else?”

Dominic's voice was quiet.

“I have to try.”

For one second Marcus looked tired.

Then alarms sounded throughout the hotel.

Gabriel's voice came through Dominic's earpiece.

“Fire system activated. Someone locked the upper exits.”

Dominic turned toward Thomas Vale.

The betrayal wasn't over.

And somewhere inside the hotel, Thomas was preparing to burn every person who could testify against him.
