Chapter 8 - The Ledger That Could Destroy an Empire

Marcus chose an old waterfront warehouse for the meeting.
Predictable.
Dramatic.
Easy to control.
Dominic hated it immediately.
“Too many entrances.”
Gabriel studied the building through binoculars.
“Six visible.”
“More inside.”
Elena sat in the rear of the SUV wearing a headset.
Dominic turned.
“You stay here.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I mean it.”
“So do I.”
Dominic stared at her.
“You're not trained.”
“For what?”
“Any of this.”
Elena held up the brass key.
“Neither were you the first time your brother chained you to a wall.”
Gabriel looked away to hide amusement.
Dominic exhaled.
“One day you're going to become impossible.”
“One day?”
Gabriel coughed.
Dominic pointed toward him.
“Not a word.”
The plan was simple.
Which meant it would probably fail.
Dominic would enter carrying a duplicate brass key.
The genuine key remained with Elena.
Marcus believed the physical key plus Dominic's code would unlock the Crane archive.
Dominic intended to give him neither.
Gabriel's men positioned themselves around the warehouse.
“Ten minutes,” Dominic told Elena.
“If I'm not out—”
“I come in.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Elena.”
“Ten minutes.”
Dominic stared.
Then nodded once.
He entered.
Marcus waited alone beneath industrial lights.
Or appeared alone.
“You look healthier,” Marcus said.
“You look disappointed.”
Marcus smiled.
“Where's Elena?”
“Not here.”
“Lying still doesn't suit you.”
Dominic stopped several yards away.
“Leave her and Noah alone.”
“Code.”
“Release the people you've detained.”
“Code.”
“Return control of Crane Holdings.”
Marcus laughed.
“You've been underground too long.”
Dominic tossed the duplicate key.
Marcus caught it.
Examined it.
“You think this ends with a brass key?”
“No.”
Dominic's expression hardened.
“It ends with you.”
From the SUV, Elena heard everything.
Then another voice came through the audio system.
A whisper.
Not Dominic.
Not Marcus.
One of Gabriel's men.
“Movement behind vehicle.”
Elena turned.
Too late.
A hand smashed against the window.
Glass fractured.
Another man opened the opposite door.
Elena reached for the alarm.
Someone dragged her out.
She fought.
Kicked.
Bit a hand.
A voice cursed.
Then another person stepped from the darkness.
Derek.
Elena froze.
He looked older.
Thinner.
But the smile was the same.
“Hi, Ellie.”
Her fear became fury.
“You.”
“Don't make this hard.”
“You sold your son for twenty thousand dollars.”
His expression flickered.
“This isn't about Noah.”
“It became about Noah when you gave Marcus information.”
Derek grabbed her arm.
“Elena.”
She struck him.
Hard.
He stumbled.
Gabriel's security team noticed.
Gunfire erupted into the air and steel nearby, forcing everyone behind cover.
Inside the warehouse Dominic heard the sound.
His face changed.
Marcus smiled.
“You really thought I didn't know?”
Dominic moved toward the exit.
Men appeared on the catwalks.
Marcus said, “Stay.”
Dominic stopped.
“Where is she?”
“Still alive.”
“You touch her—”
“There you go again.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“The legendary Dominic Crane.”
He shook his head.
“Threatening everybody because he finally found something money can't replace.”
Dominic's face gave nothing away.
But Marcus saw enough.
“Oh.”
Marcus smiled slowly.
“You care about her.”
Dominic's voice became dangerously quiet.
“That's irrelevant.”
“No. That's the first interesting thing about you in years.”
Outside, Elena broke free from Derek.
Gabriel reached her.
“Move!”
They ran behind a concrete barrier.
“Dominic's inside.”
“I know.”
Derek disappeared among Marcus's men.
Elena checked the brass key.
Still there.
Then she noticed something scratched into its side.
Numbers.
Tiny.
She held it beneath a flashlight.
“Gabriel.”
He looked.
“What?”
“Are these coordinates?”
He studied them.
“No.”
Elena frowned.
“They look like—”
A sequence.
12-4-18-1-14-5.
She stared.
Letters.
L-D-R-A-N-E?
No.
Maybe cipher.
Then she remembered something Dominic had said.
His father trusted information more than money.
The key was not only a key.
It carried part of the archive instructions.
She photographed it.
Sent the image to the secure laptop at the safe house.
Inside, Marcus ordered Dominic onto his knees.
Dominic smiled.
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
“You're still making the same mistake.”
“Which mistake?”
“Thinking I'm the smartest person on my side.”
Marcus's phone buzzed.
An alert.
Unauthorized access attempt.
The Crane archive.
His eyes widened.
Dominic saw it.
“What happened?”
Marcus stared.
Someone had entered the first authentication layer.
Not Dominic.
Marcus whispered, “Elena.”
Dominic smiled.
Marcus's calm disappeared.
“Find her!”
His men moved.
That distraction was enough.
Dominic struck the nearest guard, took his weapon, and turned the lights out.
Darkness swallowed the warehouse.
Gabriel shouted through Elena's headset.
“Move!”
Elena ran.
They reached the SUV.
Seconds later Dominic emerged from a side exit.
Gabriel opened the door.
Dominic jumped inside.
They accelerated away.
Marcus appeared behind them too late.
For several blocks no one spoke.
Then Dominic turned to Elena.
“What did you do?”
She held up her phone.
“The key has numbers.”
His eyes widened.
“You noticed them?”
“You didn't?”
“My father gave me that key when I was twenty-five. I never looked at the edge.”
Elena smiled.
“Men.”
Gabriel laughed.
Dominic ignored him.
“What did the numbers open?”
“First layer only.”
Her expression became serious.
“And I found something.”
She opened the archive preview.
A list of names appeared.
Judges.
Executives.
Police officers.
Crane employees.
Then one name made Dominic go still.
Gabriel Kane.
Elena slowly turned.
Gabriel saw the screen.
Silence filled the SUV.
Dominic's hand moved toward his weapon.
Gabriel stared at his own name.
“I can explain.”
Dominic's voice was quiet.
“You have ten seconds.”
May you like
And suddenly the man who had helped them escape might have been Marcus's traitor all along.
