Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Accident

They tore apart Gabriel’s childhood home.

Walls.

Floorboards.

Old cabinets.

Nothing.

Then Maya noticed the fireplace.

A small symbol had been carved into the stone.

A compass.

Gabriel remembered his father drawing that symbol.

He pressed it.

Click.

A stone panel opened.

Inside sat a waterproof metal box.

Gabriel’s hands trembled.

Twenty years.

He opened it.

A ledger.

Photographs.

Bank records.

And a letter.

Gabriel unfolded it.

Son,

If you are reading this, I failed to stop Richard.

Gabriel sat down.

Maya remained beside him.

The letter explained everything.

Richard had begun stealing from Bennett Development years earlier.

Thomas Bennett discovered it.

Richard threatened him.

Thomas gathered evidence.

Before he could expose Richard, his boat exploded during a storm.

The death was ruled accidental.

But Thomas had anticipated danger.

He hid copies.

One final sentence broke Gabriel.

Do not let what Richard did turn you into him.

Gabriel lowered the letter.

Maya gently touched his shoulder.

For a long time, Gabriel said nothing.

Then police arrived.

With the ledger, dash-camera footage, recordings, and Harbor Point records, investigators now had enough to pursue Richard and Adrian.

But both men had vanished.

Vanessa entered protective custody.

The company froze Richard’s authority.

Gabriel should have felt victorious.

Instead, he felt empty.

That evening, Maya found him sitting alone beside the fireplace.

“My father knew he might die.”

“Yes.”

“And he still fought.”

“He fought because he wanted you to have something worth inheriting.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Did I?”

“What?”

“Inherit something worth having?”

Maya smiled.

“You inherited his choice.”

Gabriel frowned.

“To fight?”

“No.”

“To decide what kind of man you become after someone hurts you.”

Gabriel looked at the letter.

Do not let what Richard did turn you into him.

He understood.

The next morning, Gabriel addressed his employees.

He publicly acknowledged the fraud.

Announced full cooperation with investigators.

Promised restitution to anyone harmed by Harbor Point corruption.

And refused to hide behind excuses.

The company’s stock fell.

Headlines exploded.

But something unexpected happened.

Employees stayed.

Investors called.

Community leaders who expected denial heard accountability instead.

Gabriel began rebuilding.

Not only his company.

Himself.

Then, three days later, Adrian called.

“You destroyed everything.”

Gabriel recognized his voice immediately.

“You did that yourself.”

“You think Richard cares about me?”

“No.”

“He’s leaving the country.”

Gabriel sat upright.

“Where?”

“I’ll tell you.”

“What do you want?”

“Immunity.”

“That isn’t mine to give.”

“Then convince the people who can.”

Gabriel signaled investigators tracing the call.

“Where is Richard?”

Adrian laughed.

“Closer than you think.”

Then his voice changed.

“Ask Maya.”

Gabriel froze.

“What?”

“She knows where he’s going.”

The call ended.

Gabriel turned.

Maya stood in the doorway.

Her face had gone pale.

“You heard?”

She nodded.

Gabriel waited.

Maya closed the door.

“There’s one more thing I never told you.”

Gabriel almost laughed from exhaustion.

“Of course there is.”

Maya sat opposite him.

“The night of the accident, Richard wasn’t trying only to kill you.”

Gabriel stared.

“He was trying to kill me too.”

“Why?”

Maya looked toward him.

“Because Gabriel…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“I knew Richard before I ever met you.”
