Chapter 13 - A Betrayal Inside the Family

Richard was arrested.

The envelope was recovered.

Inside was not proof of Gabriel’s mother’s guilt.

It was proof of her courage.

She had discovered Richard’s crimes after her husband’s death.

For years she quietly gathered evidence.

She had contacted Lydia.

She had protected Gabriel until he was old enough to take control of the company.

Then cancer came.

She died before finishing the work.

Gabriel sat alone reading her letters.

He cried for the first time since the accident.

Not from pain.

From relief.

Maya found him hours later.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She protected you.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I spent all night wondering whether another person I loved had betrayed me.”

Maya sat beside him.

“That’s what Richard does.”

“What?”

“He doesn’t just hurt people. He makes them doubt everyone who ever loved them.”

Gabriel looked at her.

Maya understood because Richard had done it to her too.

Her father’s disappearance.

Her belief that he had abandoned her.

Two families poisoned by the same man.

Gabriel reached for her hand.

No crisis.

No wheelchair.

No audience.

Just a choice.

Maya let him hold it.

“After this ends,” Gabriel said, “what will you do?”

“I don’t know.”

“You could stay.”

“As your maid?”

“No.”

Maya’s eyes lifted.

Gabriel nearly said it.

Then Eleanor entered.

“Sorry.”

She was not sorry.

Her tiny smile proved it.

“There’s someone downstairs.”

Vanessa.

Gabriel’s expression cooled.

Vanessa had requested one final meeting before entering a cooperation agreement with prosecutors.

She looked different.

Smaller somehow.

“I wanted to apologize.”

Gabriel said nothing.

“To both of you.”

Maya nodded politely.

Vanessa looked at Gabriel.

“I loved what you gave me.”

His expression did not change.

“I confused that with loving you.”

At least it was truthful.

“When the accident happened, I was afraid of losing everything.”

“So you joined the people who caused it.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked toward the engagement ring on his desk.

Vanessa followed his gaze.

“You kept it.”

“For evidence.”

She almost laughed.

“Of course.”

Gabriel picked it up.

Then placed it in her hand.

“No.”

Vanessa stared.

“It belongs to you.”

“I don’t want it.”

“Neither do I.”

He closed her fingers around it.

“Sell it. Give the money to the rehabilitation center.”

Vanessa began crying.

Gabriel felt no satisfaction.

Only closure.

She left.

Maya watched from the doorway.

“You’re different.”

“From before?”

“Yes.”

“Better?”

Maya smiled.

“Ask me in twenty years.”

Gabriel laughed.

Then his phone rang.

Federal investigators.

Richard had agreed to talk.

But only to Gabriel.

The meeting occurred behind glass.

Richard looked older without his expensive suit.

“You won,” he said.

“This wasn’t a game.”

“It always is.”

Gabriel sat.

“Why did you want me?”

Richard leaned forward.

“Because you have one thing I need.”

“What?”

“The original ledger.”

Gabriel frowned.

“You already know police have it.”

Richard smiled.

“That’s the copy.”

Gabriel’s blood cooled.

“Your father made two.”

“Where’s the original?”

Richard looked directly at him.

“Ask Eleanor.”

Gabriel said nothing.

Richard smiled.

May you like

“Did you really think your aunt knew nothing?”

And suddenly the woman Gabriel trusted most became the final unanswered question.
