Chapter 5 - The Enemy Sitting at His Table

Dante did not fight his way out.
He did something Isabella would never expect.
He called the police.
Not local police.
A federal investigator whose name appeared in Samuel's documents.
For years Dante had believed power meant solving problems inside the family.
Now he understood that secrecy was exactly what Isabella depended upon.
Within minutes, the vehicles outside retreated.
Whoever had followed them did not want official attention.
Samuel looked at Dante differently afterward.
"You've changed."
Dante glanced at his prosthetic.
"Seven years will do that."
They returned to New York the next day.
Samuel remained under federal protection.
Elena wanted to stay with him.
Samuel refused.
"You spent seven years waiting for me. Don't spend another day doing it."
He kissed her forehead.
"Go finish your life."
Back at Moretti Estate, the annual family gala was two days away.
Dante decided not to cancel it.
Instead, it would become the stage on which the truth emerged.
Elena hated the idea.
"You're inviting Isabella and Adrian into a room knowing what they did?"
"They already live in the room."
"That's not reassuring."
Dante smiled faintly.
"No. It isn't."
Over the next two days, they worked constantly.
They found financial transfers.
Forged authorizations.
Medical records.
Security footage.
But one piece remained missing.
Proof that Isabella ordered the explosion.
Samuel had heard her.
Adrian knew.
But neither had a recording.
Then Elena remembered the old prosthetic.
The memory card had been hidden there.
But the compartment was larger than the card.
They examined it again.
Inside the lining was a second object.
A tiny voice recorder.
Samuel had not placed it there.
Dante pressed play.
His father's voice filled the study.
"Isabella, tell me you didn't do this."
Then Isabella.
"He was going to destroy everything."
"He's my son."
"And Adrian is mine."
Dante stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
His father demanded that Isabella confess.
She refused.
Then she said:
"Dante survived. Be grateful."
His father answered:
"He lost his leg because of you."
Isabella's response was chillingly calm.
"A damaged heir is easier to control than a dead one."
Elena looked at Dante.
He showed no expression.
But his hand was trembling.
She reached for it.
He let her.
That simple gesture changed something between them.
Dante had spent years hiding weakness.
Elena did not treat his prosthetic as weakness.
She did not treat his pain as weakness either.
That night, Dante found her on the balcony.
"You should leave before tomorrow."
Elena laughed softly.
"You've tried firing me already."
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
"Elena."
She turned.
"You keep deciding what protects people without asking them what they want."
The words struck him.
"My father did that," she continued. "He disappeared to protect me. Your father lied to protect you. Everyone keeps lying because they call it protection."
Dante looked away.
"What do you want?"
"For once?"
"Yes."
Elena stepped closer.
"The truth."
"And after that?"
She looked at him for a long moment.
"I don't know yet."
Dante nodded.
It was the most honest answer either of them could give.
Then Elena touched his face.
Dante froze.
"You don't have to pretend with me."
"I'm not pretending."
"You are always pretending."
"About what?"
"That losing your leg didn't change you."
His expression hardened.
Elena did not retreat.
"It changed you. That doesn't mean it made you less."
Nobody had ever said that to him.
People either avoided mentioning the prosthetic or praised him for overcoming it.
Elena did neither.
She simply accepted that it was part of his story.
Dante covered her hand with his.
For one suspended second, the distance between them disappeared.
Then he kissed her.
Not urgently.
Not possessively.
Carefully.
As though asking a question.
Elena answered by staying.
When they separated, Dante rested his forehead against hers.
"Tomorrow will be ugly."
"Then tomorrow we'll deal with ugly."
The gala began at seven.
By eight, Moretti Estate glittered exactly as it had the night Elena first saw Dante descend the staircase.
Same chandeliers.
Same marble.
Same whispers.
Except this time Elena was not carrying a tray.
Dante had asked her to stand beside him.
She wore the same pink dress.
Not because she was serving.
Because she wanted Isabella to remember exactly who she had underestimated.
At nine fifteen, Dante raised a glass.
The ballroom quieted.
"Seven years ago, my family nearly lost me."
Isabella's face changed.
Adrian stopped moving.
Dante continued.
"For seven years, we accepted a story about what happened."
A screen descended behind him.
The warehouse footage appeared.
Guests murmured.
Isabella stood.
"Dante."
"Sit down."
She did.
The video showed Isabella arriving.
Then Adrian.
Then Samuel.
Then the explosion.
Dante played the hospital recording.
Then his father's recording.
Isabella's face lost all color.
When it ended, Dante looked at her.
"You ordered doctors to amputate a leg they believed could potentially be saved."
Isabella whispered:
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
"I was protecting Adrian."
"By destroying me?"
"You were going to inherit everything!"
Adrian suddenly stood.
"Mother, stop."
She turned on him.
"You ungrateful coward."
Adrian looked at Dante.
"I'm sorry."
Dante stared.
"For which part?"
Adrian's eyes filled with something Dante had never seen there before.
Shame.
"I went to the warehouse to stop her."
"I know."
"But afterward..."
"You decided my injury gave you an opportunity."
Adrian lowered his head.
"Yes."
The room erupted in whispers.
Isabella moved toward the exit.
Two investigators entered.
She stopped.
Dante had already turned over the evidence.
This was no family execution.
No revenge.
Just consequences.
Isabella looked back at Elena.
"This is because of you."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
She glanced at Dante.
"This happened because the truth finally reached the room."
Isabella was escorted away.
Adrian remained.
Dante looked at his cousin.
"Why did Samuel say not to trust you?"
Adrian swallowed.
"Because I did something after the explosion."
"What?"
"I found Samuel before you woke up."
Elena stepped forward.
"What did you do to my father?"
"I gave him money and told him to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because my mother was looking for him."
Elena stared.
"You saved him?"
"At first."
Adrian looked at Dante.
"Then I used his disappearance to protect myself."
Dante's expression hardened.
Adrian reached inside his jacket.
Security moved immediately.
"Wait," Adrian said.
He slowly removed an envelope.
"I've kept this for seven years."
Dante took it.
Inside was a document signed by Dante's father.
A revised ownership agreement.
Dante read the first page.
Then the second.
His face changed.
Elena stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Dante looked at Adrian.
"This can't be real."
"It is."
The document showed that shortly before his death, Dante's father had transferred controlling ownership of Moretti Holdings.
Not to Dante.
Not to Adrian.
Not to Isabella.
To a trust.
Elena read the beneficiary's name.
Her blood went cold.
May you like
Elena Rose.
