Chapter 6 - The Secret Inside the Prosthetic

"I don't want it."
Those were Elena's first words.
Dante looked at her across the study.
"You don't even know what it is."
"I know enough."
Moretti Holdings controlled hotels, real estate, logistics companies and investment properties worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Elena wanted answers.
She had never wanted an empire.
Samuel arrived the following morning under protection.
When Dante showed him the trust, he was not surprised.
"You knew?" Elena demanded.
Samuel sighed.
"I knew your name was attached to something."
"Why?"
Samuel looked at Dante.
"Your father felt responsible."
Dante's father had discovered Isabella's betrayal too late.
He could not undo Dante's injury.
He could not safely expose Isabella while Samuel and Elena remained vulnerable.
So he created insurance.
If Isabella ever gained control of the Moretti companies through Dante's death or removal, voting control would pass to Samuel's daughter.
Elena.
The person Isabella had dismissed as irrelevant.
Dante almost smiled at the irony.
Elena did not.
"I don't want his guilt."
Samuel shook his head.
"It isn't about money."
"What is it about?"
"Choice."
The trust did not give Elena personal ownership of everything.
It gave her temporary voting control under specific conditions.
Those conditions had now been triggered by proof of Isabella's fraud.
Elena could determine who controlled Moretti Holdings next.
Adrian wanted Dante.
Dante wanted an independent board.
Samuel wanted Elena to choose freely.
For the first time in her life, Elena possessed the one thing everyone else had tried to take from her.
Agency.
She spent three days reading.
Not mafia files.
Company files.
Employee pensions.
Hotels.
Warehouses.
Thousands of ordinary people depended on companies carrying the Moretti name.
Elena eventually understood what she wanted.
She called a meeting.
Dante sat across from her.
Adrian attended with attorneys.
Samuel sat beside his daughter.
Elena spoke calmly.
"Moretti Holdings becomes fully legitimate."
Dante nodded.
"Agreed."
"Independent board."
"Agreed."
"External audits."
"Agreed."
"Adrian relinquishes executive authority until the investigation into his actions is completed."
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"Agreed."
Elena looked at Dante.
"And you stop treating the company like a kingdom."
One attorney nearly coughed.
Dante raised an eyebrow.
"Define that."
"No unquestioned ruler. No decisions because people fear disagreeing with you."
A faint smile appeared on Dante's face.
"You've been waiting to say that."
"Very much."
Samuel laughed.
The motion passed.
For the first time in generations, Moretti Holdings would not be controlled by one Moretti.
Later, Dante found Elena sitting on the grand staircase.
The estate was quiet.
She had removed her shoes.
He sat beside her.
His prosthetic made a soft mechanical sound as he bent his knee.
Elena looked down.
"Can I ask you something?"
"You've never waited for permission before."
"Why did you keep your first prosthetic?"
Dante considered the question.
"I hated it."
"That's not an answer."
"It hurt. It was heavy. I fell constantly."
"Still not an answer."
He looked at her.
"Because throwing it away felt like pretending that version of me never existed."
Elena understood.
She rested her head against his shoulder.
"My father wants me to move with him for a while."
Dante became very still.
"Do you want to?"
"I don't know."
He nodded.
No demand.
No command.
No attempt to decide for her.
Elena smiled.
"You're learning."
"Apparently."
She looked up.
"If I leave, what happens to us?"
Dante's eyes met hers.
"Whatever you choose."
"That's annoyingly mature."
"I can threaten somebody if it helps."
She laughed.
The sound filled the empty staircase.
Dante realized he had never heard laughter there that did not feel rehearsed.
Then Samuel appeared at the top of the stairs.
His expression was serious.
"Dante."
Dante stood.
"What?"
"We missed something."
Samuel held the old prosthetic.
"I built the hidden compartment."
"I know."
"No. You don't understand."
Samuel turned it over.
"There were two compartments."
Dante and Elena exchanged a look.
Samuel removed another panel.
Inside was a tiny sealed envelope.
It contained a handwritten letter.
From Dante's father.
Dante opened it.
Son,
If you are reading this, then the truth finally survived longer than our lies.
Dante sat down.
The letter contained an apology.
His father admitted that fear had controlled him.
Fear of scandal.
Fear of prison.
Fear of losing the family empire.
He had delayed exposing Isabella.
That delay allowed her to act.
Your leg was not the price of weakness, his father wrote. It was the price of my silence.
Dante's eyes burned.
He continued.
Do not inherit my silence.
At the bottom was one final instruction.
A bank account number.
Samuel recognized it.
The account held money Isabella had hidden decades earlier.
Millions.
Dante could keep it.
Instead, he created a fund for employees harmed by the illegal operations and for rehabilitation programs helping amputees afford modern prosthetics.
Elena learned about it only after the paperwork was completed.
"You didn't put your name on it."
"No."
"Why?"
Dante looked down at his leg.
"Because people shouldn't have to know my name to walk again."
Elena kissed him.
This time there was no uncertainty.
Weeks passed.
The estate changed.
Isabella awaited trial.
Adrian cooperated with investigators and resigned from the company.
Samuel slowly rebuilt his relationship with his daughter.
And Dante began doing something Elena had never seen.
Living.
Not surviving.
Living.
Then one morning Elena entered the study carrying an envelope.
"I made my decision."
Dante stood.
She placed a resignation letter on his desk.
His expression became unreadable.
"You're leaving."
"Yes."
He nodded once.
"When?"
"Today."
Something inside him broke quietly.
But he did not stop her.
He had promised choice.
So he said the hardest words he had learned.
"I hope you're happy, Elena."
She stared at him.
Then smiled.
"You really didn't read the second page, did you?"
Dante frowned.
He picked up the resignation.
There was another sheet beneath it.
Not a resignation.
A lease.
For an apartment twelve minutes from Moretti Estate.
Elena folded her arms.
"I'm leaving my job, Dante."
He stared at her.
"I'm not leaving you."
May you like
For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Dante Moretti was completely speechless.
