Months later, federal investigators contacted Evelyn.
The Riverside Development investigation uncovered financial fraud committed by one of Brandon's former business partners.
Melanie learned Brandon hadn't created every illegal transfer.
Some records had been manipulated without his knowledge.
Brandon was cleared of several allegations that could have destroyed his future completely.
When Patrick called to tell Melanie, she felt relief.
Not because she wanted Brandon back.
Because she no longer wanted anyone's life defined forever by their worst mistakes.
Brandon accepted a position with a nonprofit construction company rebuilding affordable housing after storms.
Ironically, he now worked on homes for families who had lost everything.
Patrick told Melanie something that surprised her.
“He refuses management positions.”
“Why?”
“He says he wants to learn how to serve before leading anyone again.”
Melanie smiled sadly.
Maybe people really could change.
A few weeks later, Brandon mailed one small package.
Inside was their wedding photograph.
The glass had been replaced.
On the back he had written:
“This belongs to your story, not mine anymore.”
Melanie placed the photo into storage.
She kept neither bitterness nor nostalgia on display.
