Chapter 11 - The Little Girl Who Needed an Open Door

Two years after founding the Open Door Fund, Melanie met someone who reminded her of herself.
A young mother named Ava arrived carrying her six-year-old daughter and one backpack.
Her husband had controlled every dollar she earned.
She had nowhere to go.
Melanie personally helped her find temporary housing.
Weeks later, Ava started working in one of the project's cafés.
Her daughter enrolled in the community daycare.
One afternoon the little girl handed Melanie a drawing.
It showed a woman opening a giant blue door while sunlight poured inside.
“That's you,” the child said.
Melanie knelt.
“Who's walking through the door?”
“My mommy.”
Melanie couldn't speak for a moment.
She framed the drawing in her office beside the embroidered dish towel that read NOT YOUR JOB.
The Open Door Fund expanded into three neighboring counties.
What began with one painful morning became hope for hundreds of women.
Jessica joked, “Your revenge became paperwork and nonprofit registrations.”
Melanie laughed.

“Best revenge I've ever heard.”
End of Chapter 11... but one final chapter remained—the happiest one.
