Chương 12 - What Caleb Found in Minneapolis

The forensic match changed everything.
Rebecca's remains were reexamined.
Modern testing found evidence consistent with Mercer's description.
Her death investigation reopened as a homicide.
Michelle's case followed.
Then my father's.
Julian was no longer merely wanted for fraud and conspiracy.
He became the central suspect in multiple investigations.
Caleb should have stayed away.
Instead, he returned to Minneapolis.
He didn't tell me until he was already there.
I was furious.
“Mom, Grandpa left more.”
“How do you know?”
“The storage contract references a second unit.”
“Tell Ruiz.”
“I did.”
That saved our argument.
Police accompanied him.
The second unit was tiny.
Inside sat one metal filing cabinet.
No boxes.
No photographs.
Only a locked drawer.
Investigators opened it.
Inside were copies of letters Julian had written over the years.
Not romantic letters.
Instructions.
Some were coded.
Others weren't.
One mentioned Rebecca.
Another referenced “M.”
One mentioned my father.
And one contained my name.
Clara's inheritance creates unnecessary complexity. Thomas remains the obstacle.
I read that sentence three times.
Unnecessary complexity.
My father had been reduced to a logistical problem.
Another letter dated shortly before my father's death read:
Once T is handled, C becomes easier to isolate.
T.
Thomas.
C.
Clara.
I finally understood why Julian had been so attentive after my father's death.
He hadn't merely comforted me.
He had isolated me.
He handled finances.
Discouraged old friendships.
Took control of appointments.
Gradually positioned himself between me and everyone else.
Except Caleb.
My son had remained the one relationship Julian couldn't control.
Which explained why Julian had encouraged Caleb to take a job out of state.
Why he complained Caleb visited too often.
Why he called him immature.
Julian hadn't been criticizing our son.
He had been trying to remove my final witness.
Caleb found another item in the drawer.
A photograph of himself.
Taken without his knowledge.
Outside his apartment.
On the back:
Potential complication.
I couldn't breathe when I saw it.
My son had become a target too.
Ruiz immediately increased protection.
Caleb resisted.
I didn't care.
“You saved my life once,” I told him. “You don't get to risk yours because you think you're invincible.”
He looked at me.
“I learned stubbornness from you.”
“Then learn survival too.”
He smiled faintly.
For the first time in weeks, I did too.
That evening, Sabrina provided investigators with a location Julian had once described as his “last resort.”
An abandoned hunting property near the Canadian border.
Police searched it.
Empty.
But someone had been there recently.
Food.
Fuel.
Maps.
And photographs.
Hundreds of photographs.
Of me.
Caleb.
Ruiz.
Laura.
Mercer.
Sabrina.
Julian wasn't simply hiding.
He was watching everyone involved.
Pinned to the center of the wall was a photograph of our house.
A red circle surrounded the bedroom.
Beneath it Julian had written:
FINISH WHERE IT STARTED.
I knew exactly what he meant.
He intended to return.
Not for evidence this time.
For me.
Ruiz wanted me moved out of state.
I refused.
Running forever wasn't a life.
Instead, we made another plan.
A plan that depended on Julian believing he was still smarter than everyone hunting him.
We announced publicly that I was returning home.
It wasn't entirely true.
But Julian wouldn't know that.
And somewhere in the darkness, my husband saw the news.
