Chương 15 - The Recording He Never Knew Existed

The warehouse had an underground drainage access.

My father showed it to me when I was seventeen.

Julian had never known.

Police entered through it.

I remained outside despite every instinct telling me to run toward my son.

Ruiz refused to let me.

For once, I listened.

Inside, officers found Caleb's chair.

Empty.

The photograph had been staged earlier.

Caleb wasn't there.

Then my phone rang.

Caleb.

“Mom?”

I nearly collapsed.

“Where are you?”

“With officers.”

“What happened?”

Julian's people had intercepted the protection vehicle, but Caleb escaped during the confusion and reached a nearby business.

The photograph had been taken during the brief period he'd been restrained.

Julian had never actually brought him to the warehouse.

Another manipulation.

Another attempt to separate me from police.

But the failed trap produced something valuable.

One of the men involved was arrested.

He wasn't loyal.

He was paid.

Within hours, he identified a motel where Julian had been staying.

Police arrived.

Empty room.

Still warm coffee.

Julian had left minutes earlier.

But he forgot something.

A voice recorder.

Perhaps he didn't forget.

Perhaps he wanted us to find it.

The device contained conversations.

Julian talking to Mercer.

Julian talking to Sabrina.

Julian planning insurance paperwork.

Then one recording silenced the entire room.

My father's voice.

“You won't touch my daughter.”

Julian replied:

“You can't protect her forever.”

“You've already killed two women.”

“You can't prove that.”

“I don't need to. I only need Clara to believe me.”

Then Julian:

“She won't.”

“Why?”

“Because she loves me.”

My eyes filled.

He had understood exactly how to use my love against my father.

The recording continued.

My father said:

“One day she'll see you.”

Julian laughed.

“When she does, it'll be too late.”

The audio ended.

For five years, I'd believed my father died without finishing what he started.

But he had done something more important.

He had forced Julian to speak.

The recorder was old, but forensic analysis supported its authenticity.

Combined with the new confession captured in my bedroom, the case strengthened dramatically.

Judge Crane was questioned.

He denied knowingly participating in murder.

Financial investigators discovered suspicious payments, and his legal problems became separate from ours.

Sabrina entered a cooperation agreement.

Mercer did the same.

The network around Julian collapsed.

But Julian remained missing.

Weeks passed.

Then a month.

For the first time, I began rebuilding ordinary routines.

I moved temporarily.

Caleb returned to work.

Laura visited Rebecca's grave.

I attended therapy.

I learned something surprising.

Healing wasn't dramatic.

It was making coffee without checking the doorway.

Sleeping four hours instead of two.

Laughing unexpectedly.

Forgetting Julian existed for ten whole minutes.

Then remembering and realizing the memory didn't own you.

Six weeks after the warehouse incident, I returned to my house during daylight.

I stood inside the bedroom.

The armoire remained open.

I considered removing it.

Instead, I closed the hidden panel.

That room had saved my life.

It didn't deserve to become a monument to fear.

My phone rang.

Detective Ruiz.

“We found him.”

I couldn't speak.

“Where?”

“Vermont.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He tried to cross using false identification.”

My knees weakened.

“Is he in custody?”

“Yes.”

I sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time since 2:13 that morning, I knew exactly where Julian was.

Behind a locked door.

And he couldn't reach me.

But arrest wasn't the end.

May you like

It was the beginning of the part Julian had spent twenty years avoiding.

The truth would finally have to survive daylight.
