Chapter 14 - The Night They Came for Tessa

Gabriel never intended to wait until the following night.
At 3:08 a.m., the power failed.
Emergency lights activated immediately.
Tessa woke in the secure guest suite to darkness washed in red.
Her first thought was Luca.
Her second was that hospitals did not lose power quietly.
Backup generators engaged within seconds.
Except the corridor outside her door remained dark.
Tessa sat up.
The two guards stationed outside were not speaking.
She reached for her phone.
No signal.
She moved toward the door.
Stopped.
Every instinct told her not to open it.
A soft knock came.
“Tessa.”
Marco’s voice.
She reached for the handle.
Then froze.
Marco never called her Tessa when performing security procedures.
He used Morgan.
Tiny detail.
Maybe meaningless.
Maybe not.
“Say the code.”
Silence.
Then the voice outside said, “Open the door.”
Not Marco.
Tessa backed away.
Someone hit the door.
Once.
Twice.
The electronic lock remained secure.
A third impact.
Tessa grabbed the bedside lamp.
Ridiculous weapon.
Better than nothing.
Then came a different sound.
Gunfire?
No.
A heavy crash.
Shouting.
The emergency lights flickered.
“Tessa!”
This time Luca.
Her heart stopped.
“Code!”
“Patient first.”
She opened the door.
Luca stood outside with Marco and two security men.
One of her guards lay conscious against the wall, holding his head.
The other was being helped upright.
A man in hospital maintenance clothing had been restrained farther down the corridor.
Tessa looked at Luca.
“You’re supposed to be in bed.”
He actually looked offended.
“Somebody came for you.”
“So you ignored medical orders?”
“Yes.”
“Consistently terrible patient.”
His hands closed around her shoulders.
Then he pulled her against him.
Tessa stopped speaking.
Luca held her as though he needed physical confirmation she existed.
For several seconds she let him.
Then Marco cleared his throat.
“Terrible timing,” Luca muttered.
“I’ve made peace with it.”
They discovered how the intruder entered.
Vanguard maintenance credentials.
Again.
Gabriel still possessed dormant access accounts hidden throughout the hospital systems.
The building itself had become unsafe.
Luca was discharged against Tessa’s preference six hours later.
Medically, he was stable enough.
Barely.
Security moved the group to Renzo’s private residence outside the city.
No hospital electronics.
No third-party contractors.
No public schedule.
Tessa’s mother was relocated there too.
When Tessa saw her step from the car unharmed, composure finally broke.
She hugged her mother and cried.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
Years of refusing to need anyone dissolved in twenty seconds.
Her mother stroked her hair.
“You always think you have to handle everything alone.”
Tessa laughed through tears.
“Not now, Mom.”
“When, then?”
Luca stood several feet away.
Tessa’s mother looked at him over her daughter’s shoulder.
“So that’s the patient.”
Tessa closed her eyes.
“Please don’t.”
“He looks healthier than I expected.”
Luca approached.
“Mrs. Morgan.”
“Luca.”
Tessa looked between them.
“You know his name?”
“The entire country probably knows his name now.”
Luca offered his hand.
Her mother ignored it and hugged him.
Everyone froze.
Including Luca.
“Thank you for protecting my daughter.”
Luca looked stunned.
Tessa nearly laughed.
“She protected me first,” he said.
Her mother stepped back.
“Then you’re even.”
Luca looked at Tessa.
“No.”
One word.
Simple.
Not even close.
Later, Tessa found him alone on the terrace.
“You frightened my mother.”
“She hugged me.”
“That was fear.”
“I liked her.”
“Dangerous.”
“She said the same about you.”
Tessa smiled.
Then looked toward the dark grounds.
“Gabriel knows the hospital is useless now.”
“Yes.”
“So he’ll change tactics.”
“Yes.”
“Do we still go to the meeting?”
“No.”
Tessa turned.
Luca continued.
“We make him think we will.”
The plan depended on deception.
Gabriel’s coordinates pointed toward an abandoned shipping office near the river.
Marco would create visible movement suggesting Luca and Tessa were traveling there.
Meanwhile investigators would track whoever monitored the route.
Adrian finally resurfaced and joined them at Renzo’s property.
His reunion with Luca was quiet.
No dramatic embraces.
Just two men staring at each other before Adrian said, “You look terrible.”
Luca replied, “Everyone keeps saying that.”
Then they hugged.
Tessa looked away.
Some moments did not belong to her.
Adrian brought another piece of information.
Gabriel possessed an emergency command site beneath one of Vanguard’s old operations buildings.
Independent servers.
Private cameras.
Records not connected to the primary network.
“If he keeps anything,” Adrian said, “it’ll be there.”
“Where?” Marco asked.
Adrian gave the address.
Renzo stared.
“That building was sold.”
“On paper,” Adrian replied.
“Owner?”
“A shell company.”
Tessa already knew the answer.
“Gabriel.”
Adrian nodded.
Authorities obtained warrants using the hospital sabotage evidence.
By evening, a coordinated search began.
Tessa remained at Renzo’s residence.
Luca was supposed to remain too.
For once he complied.
Mostly because Tessa threatened to physically block the door.
At 11:40 p.m., Marco called.
“We found the server room.”
Luca put the call on speaker.
“And Gabriel?”
“Not here.”
“What did you find?”
Marco hesitated.
“Videos.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
Hospital corridors.
Luca’s garage.
Tessa’s apartment.
Renzo’s residence.
Security offices.
Months of surveillance.
Gabriel had been studying them long before Luca announced the restructuring.
Then Marco said something worse.
“There’s a live feed.”
“Where?”
“Your house.”
Luca went still.
His estate had been empty since the collision.
Except on the screen, a figure sat calmly inside Luca’s private office.
Gabriel.
Waiting.
Tessa understood immediately.
“He wants you to come to him.”
Luca stared at the live image.
Gabriel raised a glass toward the camera.
Then held up a handwritten sign.
COME HOME.
The trap had reversed.
Gabriel knew his server site would be discovered.
He had used it to pull security away.
May you like
And now he sat inside the one place Luca once believed nobody could enter without permission.
His own home.
