Chapter 15 - Patient First, Everything Else Later

Luca wanted to go.
Tessa said no.
Renzo said no.
Marco, speaking over the phone, used language considerably less polite.
Adrian simply took Luca’s car keys.
“You’ve all become very brave while I’m recovering,” Luca said.
Tessa stood in front of him.
“You’re not walking into your house because Gabriel wrote you a note.”
“It’s my house.”
“That argument makes you sound twelve.”
Adrian lifted the keys.
“You were unbearable at twelve too.”
Luca gave him a murderous look.
For the first time, the tension broke enough for Renzo to laugh.
Then Gabriel called.
Luca answered.
“You’re taking too long.”
“Enjoying my furniture?”
“Beautiful place.”
“Thank you.”
Tessa stared at Luca.
How could two men discuss furniture while one was threatening the other?
Gabriel continued.
“I left something on your desk.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
Luca’s expression changed.
“About?”
“Your father.”
Renzo became still.
Gabriel heard the silence.
“Ah. Renzo is there.”
“What about my father?” Luca asked.
“He knew.”
Luca stopped breathing.
“Knew what?”
“That your inner organization was being drained.”
Renzo shook his head.
“Lie.”
Gabriel laughed.
“Ask your uncle why your father created the succession council twelve years ago.”
Luca looked at Renzo.
Renzo’s face revealed too much.
Gabriel continued.
“He suspected someone close was stealing. Never proved who.”
“You were twenty-six,” Luca said.
“Twenty-seven.”
“So you were already involved.”
“I learned from the best.”
Luca’s voice became colder.
“My father?”
“Not directly.”
Tessa watched Renzo.
“Who?” she whispered.
Renzo closed his eyes.
Gabriel answered through the phone.
“Luca’s father wasn’t the first Vesceri leader betrayed by his own people.”
The history did not matter to Tessa as much as Gabriel wanted it to.
That was his strategy.
Pull Luca backward.
Into family secrets.
Old grievances.
Inherited fear.
She stepped closer to the phone.
“Gabriel.”
Silence.
“Hello, nurse.”
“You keep talking about the past because you have nothing left.”
Luca looked at her.
Gabriel laughed.
“You think so?”
“Your contractors are identified. Your financial records are seized. Elias is cooperating. Your server room is compromised.”
“You assume everything important was there.”
“No.”
Tessa glanced at Luca.
“But you’re sitting alone in somebody else’s house trying to make him angry enough to come to you.”
Silence.
Tessa continued.
“That means you need him.”
Gabriel stopped laughing.
Luca slowly smiled.
She had found it.
The pressure point.
“What do you need him for?” Tessa asked.
Gabriel ended the call.
Marco spoke through another phone.
“Well done.”
Luca looked at Tessa.
“Remind me never to argue with you.”
“You do daily.”
“Fair.”
They examined the question.
Why did Gabriel need Luca physically present?
Signature?
Biometric authorization?
A hidden safe?
Luca thought suddenly of the executive vault beneath his home office.
“It requires my fingerprint.”
“What’s inside?” Marco asked.
“Original company ownership certificates. Legacy trusts. Encryption keys.”
Renzo swore.
“If Gabriel obtains those—”
“He could transfer assets before authorities freeze everything.”
Tessa understood.
Gabriel’s empire was collapsing.
He did not want revenge.
He wanted escape money.
“He needs your fingerprint,” she said.
Luca nodded.
That changed the strategy.
Gabriel could not accomplish his goal unless Luca came close enough.
Which meant Gabriel had created his own weakness.
They contacted investigators.
Luca would go.
Tessa hated the plan.
So did everyone else.
But this time it was not reckless.
Law enforcement controlled the perimeter.
Marco’s team coordinated legally rather than operating independently.
Cameras covered entry points.
Luca wore a concealed microphone.
Tessa remained at a command vehicle two blocks away.
She made him promise one thing.
“If anything changes, you leave.”
“I promise.”
“Luca.”
“I promise.”
He touched her face gently.
Tessa’s throat tightened.
“You don’t get to make me save you four times.”
“Three.”
“The transport counts.”
“I wasn’t in the bed.”
“Four.”
He smiled.
Then became serious.
“I intend to come back.”
The operation began at 1:07 a.m.
Luca entered his estate alone.
Gabriel sat in the office.
On Tessa’s monitor, she watched Luca approach.
Her hands shook.
She hated this.
Every part.
Gabriel stood.
No visible weapon.
“You came.”
“You knew I would.”
Gabriel gestured toward the desk.
Documents waited.
“Open the vault.”
“No.”
“You’re losing everything anyway.”
“I’m dismantling it.”
“You think those are different?”
“Yes.”
Gabriel laughed.
“You really believe you can become legitimate because a nurse told you fear is unhealthy?”
Luca’s expression did not change.
“Tessa didn’t tell me who to become.”
“No. She just gave you somebody new to impress.”
Tessa felt anger rise.
Luca surprised her by smiling.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“I don’t care what you think of me anymore.”
Gabriel’s expression faltered.
Luca continued.
“For years every decision was built around maintaining respect from men like you.”
“And now?”
“Now I’d rather sleep.”
Marco muttered through the command headset, “That may be the cruelest thing he’s ever said.”
Tessa almost laughed.
Gabriel’s desperation surfaced.
“Open the vault.”
“No.”
“You owe your people.”
“I owe them a future where you don’t own their fear.”
Gabriel moved closer.
Then the signal cut.
Tessa sat upright.
“Why did the feed stop?”
Technicians scrambled.
Jammer.
Inside the estate.
Marco’s voice changed.
“Move.”
Teams advanced.
Tessa stared at the dead screen.
Every instinct screamed at her to run toward the house.
She reached for the vehicle door.
Then stopped.
Patient first.
Everything else later.
That rule had never meant acting without thinking.
It meant doing what truly protected the person in her care, not what reduced her own fear.
She stayed.
Thirty seconds later, audio returned.
Luca’s voice.
Calm.
“I told you no.”
Then Gabriel.
“You were always weak.”
Luca answered.
“No. I was afraid people would discover I wanted something better.”
Silence.
Then the sound of a door opening.
Marco’s voice filled the channel.
“Gabriel Russo, don’t move.”
Tessa finally breathed.
The operation ended without gunfire.
Gabriel surrendered after realizing every exit was blocked.
When Luca emerged from the house fifteen minutes later, Tessa ignored every rule she had ever created about attachment.
She ran to him.
He caught her.
“You stayed in the van,” he said into her hair.
“You sound surprised.”
“I’m proud.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
His arms tightened.
Behind them, Gabriel was taken into custody.
May you like
Luca did not watch.
For the first time, he chose to look forward instead.
