Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Already Knew

By three in the morning, the Vance estate no longer felt like a home.

It felt like a crime scene.

Police officers moved through the hallway.

Paramedics had taken photographs.

A detective had already asked Clara three separate times what she had seen.

She gave the same answer each time.

“I heard screaming.”

That part was true.

But there was something she wasn't telling anyone.

The capsule.

The one she had tampered with.

Every time she thought about it, her stomach twisted.

She had expected Julian to be embarrassed.

Maybe exposed.

Maybe frightened.

She had never imagined ambulances.

She had never imagined police.

And she certainly hadn't imagined that Sienna would accuse Eleanor of knowing about the affair.

At 4:15 a.m., Detective Marcus Hale returned to the living room.

“Mrs. Vance?”

Clara looked up.

“Yes?”

“We found no evidence of forced entry.”

Clara's mouth went dry.

“I understand.”

“Your husband entered the guest room voluntarily?”

“I don't know.”

The detective studied her.

“You're his wife.”

“That doesn't mean I know where he goes every minute.”

The detective didn't respond.

He simply wrote something down.

Then his gaze shifted toward the staircase.

“Mrs. Vance, where were you between midnight and the time you called emergency services?”

“In my bedroom.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

The lie felt enormous.

But the detective moved on.

Across the room, Sienna was sitting beneath a blanket.

She hadn't spoken to anyone for nearly an hour.

When the detective finally approached her, Sienna looked toward Clara.

Then away.

Clara understood.

There was something Sienna didn't want to say in front of the police.

At sunrise, Ethan arrived.

He looked exhausted.

His work jacket was still covered in dust.

He rushed through the front door.

“Where's Sienna?”

Clara watched him cross the room.

“She’s here.”

He ran toward his wife.

Sienna burst into tears.

Ethan held her tightly.

“What happened?”

She shook her head.

“I can't.”

His eyes lifted toward Clara.

Then toward Eleanor, who had regained consciousness.

“What happened to my brother?”

No one answered.

Finally, Eleanor spoke.

“Julian is in the hospital.”

Ethan's face hardened.

“What happened?”

Sienna whispered.

“He came into my room.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Clara saw the truth hit him.

His wife began crying again.

“I didn't ask him to come.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He didn't hurt me.”

But the way she said it made everything worse.

Ethan looked at Clara.

Clara could not meet his eyes.

Hours later, the family received news.

Julian had survived.

He was unconscious, but stable.

Doctors believed the crisis had been caused by an unknown substance.

The police wanted to know where it came from.

Clara felt the floor move beneath her.

Then Detective Hale arrived again.

“We've spoken with the hospital.”

Clara's heart hammered.

“They've requested toxicology testing.”

“Will he be okay?”

“We don't know yet.”

The detective paused.

“There is something else.”

He placed a plastic evidence bag on the table.

Inside was Julian's suit jacket.

Clara stared at it.

“We found this in the pocket.”

The blister pack.

Her breath caught.

Detective Hale looked at her.

“These were prescribed or purchased by your husband?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you know he was taking them?”

“No.”

That answer was true.

At least technically.

The detective nodded.

“We'll need to examine them.”

Clara watched him leave.

Sienna approached.

“He doesn't know,” she whispered.

Clara turned.

“Who?”

“Ethan.”

“Know what?”

Sienna's eyes filled with tears.

“About the money.”

Clara stared at her.

“What money?”

Sienna glanced toward Eleanor.

The older woman was standing near the staircase.

Their eyes met.

Eleanor's expression was unmistakable.

Warning.

Sienna immediately lowered her voice.

“You shouldn't be here when they find out.”

Clara frowned.

“Find out what?”

Sienna looked at her.

Then said the words that made Clara's blood run cold.

“Your husband wasn't having an affair because he loved me.”

“Then why?”

Sienna hesitated.

“Because I knew where the money was.”

Clara felt a chill.

“What money?”

Sienna didn't answer.

Instead, she reached into her robe pocket.

She pulled out a small photograph.

She handed it to Clara.

It showed Julian standing beside a man Clara had never seen before.

Behind them was a medical technology conference.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten number.

$640,000.

Clara looked up.

“What is this?”

Sienna's voice broke.

“That's what they stole.”

“Who?”

Sienna glanced toward Eleanor.

“Everyone in this family.”

At that moment, Eleanor's voice came from behind them.

“Give me that photograph.”

Clara turned.

Eleanor was staring directly at her.

For the first time in six years, Clara saw fear in her mother-in-law's eyes.

Not arrogance.

Not contempt.

Fear.

Clara held the photograph tighter.

“No.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You don't understand what you're holding.”

“Then explain it.”

Silence.

Eleanor looked toward the windows.

The sun had risen over the estate.

And with daylight came the realization that the secrets buried inside the Vance family were no longer safe.

Then Clara noticed something written beneath the number on the photograph.

A single sentence.

THE MONEY WAS NEVER JULIAN'S.

Clara looked at Sienna.

“What does that mean?”

Sienna whispered:

“It means someone has been waiting six years for your husband to disappear.”

And suddenly Clara realized something even more frightening.

May you like

The ambulance hadn't been the beginning of the family's disaster.

It had been the beginning of the investigation.
