Chapter 3 - The Six-Figure Secret

Clara did not sleep.

She sat alone in the library while rain began tapping against the windows.

The photograph lay on the desk.

$640,000.

She couldn't stop looking at the number.

For six years, she had believed her marriage was simply falling apart.

Now she wondered whether the entire marriage had been built around a lie.

At eight in the morning, her phone rang.

It was Julian's doctor.

“He's awake.”

Clara stood.

“Can I see him?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“He's confused. His condition is improving, but the doctors want to understand what happened before allowing visitors.”

Clara swallowed.

“Does he know about the police?”

“Yes.”

“Does he know about Sienna?”

A pause.

“He asked for his mother.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Of course.

Eleanor.

Always Eleanor.

When she walked into the kitchen, she found Eleanor sitting alone.

Clara placed the photograph on the table.

“Tell me everything.”

Eleanor didn't look at it.

“There is nothing to tell.”

“Six hundred and forty thousand dollars says otherwise.”

Eleanor finally looked up.

“You have no idea what you're involving yourself in.”

“I’m already involved.”

“You are Julian's wife.”

“And you are his mother.”

Eleanor's expression hardened.

“You think this is about betrayal.”

“Isn't it?”

“No.”

Eleanor's voice became quieter.

“This family has survived things you couldn't imagine.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“I've spent six years being told I wasn't good enough for your son.”

“That was for your own protection.”

“My protection?”

Eleanor looked away.

Before Clara could respond, the front door opened.

Two federal investigators entered.

Clara immediately knew something had changed.

Detective Hale followed them.

“Mrs. Vance,” he said, “we need to ask you some questions.”

Eleanor stood.

“About what?”

“One of your son's corporate accounts.”

Clara watched Eleanor's face.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

The investigators explained that Julian's company had discovered irregularities involving a private consulting arrangement.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars had been transferred through shell companies.

Some of the money had eventually disappeared.

The name attached to one of the accounts?

Ethan.

Clara stared.

“Ethan?”

The investigator nodded.

“On paper.”

“But he didn't do this.”

“We haven't concluded that he did.”

Clara suddenly understood.

Ethan had been working nonstop.

His name could have been used without his knowledge.

Then another document appeared.

Sienna's name.

Clara's stomach tightened.

“Why is everyone connected?”

The investigator looked at her.

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

Later that afternoon, Ethan returned to the estate.

He looked devastated.

“They're investigating my accounts.”

Sienna began crying.

“I didn't know.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You knew something.”

She said nothing.

“Didn't you?”

“I knew Julian was involved.”

Ethan's face changed.

“You and Julian?”

Sienna nodded.

“But it wasn't what you think.”

“Then what was it?”

She looked at Clara.

Clara knew.

This was the moment.

Sienna finally confessed.

Julian had approached her months earlier.

He claimed he needed her help moving money.

He said the money belonged to their family.

He told her the transfers were legitimate.

She believed him.

Then she discovered the truth.

The money belonged to Julian's company.

He had been diverting funds through accounts connected to people he trusted.

And Sienna had discovered something worse.

Julian wasn't acting alone.

“There was someone above him,” Sienna said.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“But Eleanor does.”

Everyone looked toward the older woman.

Eleanor's face had gone pale.

“You're lying.”

Sienna shook her head.

“You told me to keep quiet.”

“I told you to protect this family.”

“You told me Ethan would lose everything if I spoke.”

Ethan stared at his mother.

“Mom?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From your brother.”

Silence filled the room.

Eleanor finally revealed that Julian had been manipulating company accounts for years.

When an internal audit began getting too close, he panicked.

The affair with Sienna had not started because of romance.

It had started because Julian believed Sienna knew too much.

He used gifts and money to keep her quiet.

But Sienna had secretly kept evidence.

The photograph.

The account numbers.

The messages.

The transfers.

And the six-figure secret had one final piece.

A missing $640,000.

Money that had vanished months earlier.

Money no one could account for.

Clara looked at Eleanor.

“Where did it go?”

Eleanor's lips trembled.

“I don't know.”

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a distorted voice said:

“You should have let Julian take the blame.”

The call ended.

Ethan stood.

“Who was that?”

Eleanor didn't answer.

Clara's phone rang immediately afterward.

Same number.

She stared at it.

Then answered.

The voice returned.

“You've been looking in the wrong house.”

Clara's blood ran cold.

“What do you want?”

A pause.

“Ask your husband what happened six years ago.”

The call ended.

Clara looked at the others.

Six years.

Exactly when she married Julian.

Exactly when everything in her life had changed.

She suddenly remembered something she had forgotten.

The first night she met Julian, Eleanor had said something strange.

“You don't know what you've married into.”

May you like

At the time, Clara thought it was arrogance.

Now she wondered if it had been a warning.
