Chapter 13 - The Hospital Waiting Room

Mom had fainted from exhaustion and dehydration.

Nothing more serious.

But we didn’t know that for three hours.

Those three hours changed us.

Tyler arrived first.

Madison second.

I arrived twenty minutes later from Washington.

Dad appeared at the hospital shortly afterward.

When he entered the waiting room, everyone became still.

He looked at me.

Then Madison.

Then Tyler.

“Is she okay?”

“We don’t know,” Tyler said.

Dad sat alone.

He didn’t demand information.

Didn’t take control.

Didn’t tell anyone what to do.

He simply waited.

Eventually, I sat across from him.

His hair had become noticeably grayer.

“You look well,” he said.

“You too.”

It wasn’t true.

He looked tired.

After several minutes, he said:

“I’m sorry about Thanksgiving.”

I had heard apologies in letters.

Never aloud.

“I know.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry I put my hands on you.”

The waiting room seemed to disappear.

“I spent my entire life believing being the father meant being in charge.”

He swallowed.

“I was wrong.”

I didn’t tell him everything was okay.

It wasn’t.

But I said:

“Thank you for saying it.”

His eyes filled.

That was enough.

When the doctor finally told us Mom was fine, all four of us laughed from relief.

Dad did not come home with us.

He hugged Tyler.

Then Madison.

When he reached me, he stopped.

“May I?”

That question almost broke me.

Permission.

He was asking permission.

I nodded.

He hugged me gently.

For two seconds.

Then stepped away.

Boundaries.

Respect.

Change.

Not perfection.

But change.

May you like

As he walked down the hospital corridor, Madison took my hand.

And for the first time, none of us needed to choose sides.
