Chapter 17 - The Next Rank

My career entered territory I had once been afraid to imagine.
The new role carried greater responsibility.
Greater scrutiny.
Greater sacrifice.
I accepted.
Not because I needed another title.
Because I finally understood the difference between ambition and escape.
For years, I had worked partly because work gave me somewhere to run.
Now I could choose work because I loved it.
At the promotion ceremony, my family attended.
Dad sat quietly in the second row.
Mom beside him.
Madison and Tyler nearby.
When my name was called, I walked forward.
General Thompson stood waiting.
He pinned the new insignia.
Then saluted.
I returned it.
The applause began.
I looked toward my family.
Dad was crying.
Not loudly.
Not theatrically.
He simply stood and applauded.
There was no jealousy in his face.
No fear.
Just pride.
It took him decades to learn how to feel it without needing ownership over the person who inspired it.
Afterward, he approached.
“I’m proud of you.”
Once, those words would have meant everything.
Now they meant something healthier.
“Thank you.”
He smiled.
That was all.
No validation addiction.
No desperate little girl inside me begging him to repeat it.
I already knew my worth.
His pride was a gift.
May you like
Not proof.
That difference was freedom.
