Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Last Betrayal

Vanessa was arrested before dawn. Her apology video remained online while officers led her from Marlene’s house.
In interrogation, she insisted she never wanted Noah harmed. She had traded information for Keller’s promise to take her out of the country and give her money. She described herself as trapped, as though every betrayal had happened around her rather than through her.
Maya watched a portion of the interview with Ortiz. Vanessa complained that Maya always received admiration without understanding that Maya’s achievements had been earned while Vanessa’s rewards were manufactured.
“She walked onto that stage with a baby and everyone loved her,” Vanessa said. “I did everything Mom asked, and I became the monster.”
Ortiz paused the video. “Do you want to keep watching?”
“No.”
Maya no longer needed to study Vanessa’s cruelty to prove it existed.
Prosecutors combined the financial and kidnapping conspiracies for strategic hearings while keeping separate charges where required. Morris began negotiating. He blamed Marlene for the original method, Caleb for digital tampering, Keller for violence and Vanessa for leaking information. His willingness to sacrifice everyone revealed where more evidence could be found.
Caleb also sought a deal. He admitted changing grades and complaints. He described how Vanessa supplied Maya’s passwords after watching her type them at home. But he claimed the scholarship theft predated him and that Morris threatened his job.
Maya attended no negotiation. She concentrated on the restitution committee and Noah’s permanent-placement evaluation. The court required a search for suitable biological relatives. Ruth was disqualified. No paternal relative passed initial review. Then investigators located Elise’s younger half sister, Grace Carter, a pediatric nurse living in Oregon.
Grace had cut contact with Ruth years earlier and never known Elise was pregnant. She flew to meet Noah and Maya under Daniel’s supervision.
Maya prepared herself for conflict. Instead Grace cried quietly when she saw Elise’s photograph beside the crib.
“I don’t want to take him from the only mother he knows,” Grace said. “I want him to know that Elise loved him.”
They spoke for hours. Grace shared childhood stories, photographs and a recording of Elise singing. Maya explained every legal step. They agreed Noah deserved both stability and truth.
Grace supported Maya’s petition for adoption and requested an open relationship if the court approved it. For the first time, biology entered Noah’s life not as a weapon but as a gift.
On the day Grace signed her statement, Marlene demanded a meeting. She claimed to possess evidence that could convict Morris and prove she had tried to protect Maya’s parents.
Her price was outrageous: Maya must publicly forgive her and ask prosecutors for mercy.

Maya declined.
Marlene smiled through the glass partition. “Then you’ll never know why your parents were on that road the night they died.”
