Chapter 9 - The Woman in the Photograph

Ruth Carter surrendered two days later. She was sixty-three, gray-haired and visibly ill. She asked to speak with Maya before answering prosecutors’ questions.

Maya refused a private meeting but agreed to sit across from her in an interview room with Ortiz present.

Ruth explained that she once handled bookkeeping for a foundation that partnered with Bellweather. Morris recruited her to create false vendors. Marlene came later, seeking help hiding withdrawals from Maya’s trust. When the women met, Morris recognized a method that could be repeated.

Elise discovered the files as a teenager. Ruth forced her out rather than risk exposure. Years later Elise returned, pregnant and desperate, hoping her mother would help dismantle the operation. Ruth pretended to agree, then warned Morris.

“Did you cause her death?” Maya asked.

Ruth began crying. “I told Keller where she was. I thought they would frighten her. I did not know she was sick.”

Elise had delivered without adequate care while fleeing them. She reached St. Catherine’s intending to meet Maya, but collapsed blocks away after leaving Noah beneath the awning. A passerby called an ambulance for Elise without noticing the carrier. Maya arrived minutes later.

The coincidence was not coincidence at all. Elise had chosen her.

Ruth offered the location of a second ledger in exchange for leniency. Maya told Ortiz she wanted no role in the bargain, but she wanted every victim identified.

The ledger revealed money stolen from more than eighty students and twelve vulnerable mothers. It also contained payments to local officials who had dismissed complaints. The scandal expanded beyond the university.

Maya helped the clinic establish a hotline. Stories poured in: a veteran whose grant vanished, a nursing student falsely accused of fraud, siblings who dropped out after aid was revoked. Each story made the conspiracy less abstract and the fight more urgent.

Vanessa watched Maya’s public support grow and changed tactics. She posted a video apologizing for “participating in a culture of competition.” She did not mention the forged complaint, stolen grades or attempt to take Noah. Some viewers praised her bravery.

Then Vanessa asked to meet Maya and offered evidence against Marlene.

At a supervised conference, Vanessa claimed Marlene had controlled her all her life. She produced a key to a storage unit containing family records. In return, she wanted Maya to tell prosecutors Vanessa had acted under pressure.

“Were you under pressure when you called Noah trash?” Maya asked.

Vanessa lowered her eyes. “I was angry.”

“Were you under pressure when you reached for him?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Maya accepted the key without promising anything. Investigators searched the unit and recovered jewelry, cash, trust statements and letters written by Maya’s mother before her death.

One letter was addressed to Marlene.

If anything happens to us, you are not to control Maya’s money. We know what you did.

The letter named another trustee: Arthur Vance, then a young attorney and now president of Bellweather University.
