Chapter 11 - Someone Wanted a War

The flight to Zurich departed before dawn.
Nobody slept.
Clara sat beside the window of Alessandro's private jet and watched New York shrink beneath the clouds.
Once, the existence of private jets had been part of the life she rejected.
Now she appreciated one practical advantage.
No security lines.
Across the cabin, Enzo stared at his phone.
His mother had disappeared from the Moretti estate sometime after midnight.
No forced entry.
No sign of struggle.
A single camera showed Sofia leaving through the garden with a man whose face remained hidden beneath an umbrella.
“She went willingly,” Clara said.
Enzo looked up.
“What?”
“The video.”
“She could've been threatened.”
“Maybe.”
Clara watched him.
“But your mother kept secrets about Matteo for decades.”
Enzo's jaw tightened.
“You think she's involved?”
“I think we stop assuming anybody is exactly what they seem.”
Alessandro, seated behind them, said, “Good rule.”
Clara turned.
“You don't get to compliment me while hiding half my childhood.”
“Fair.”
Enzo actually smiled.
For a few seconds, tension eased.
Then Lena emerged from the cabin office.
“I recovered another section of Giovanni's video.”
Everyone gathered.
On the screen, Giovanni Moretti looked tired.
Older than Clara remembered from photographs.
He spoke directly toward the camera.
“The arrangement began as a way to stop open violence.”
Alessandro leaned forward.
Giovanni continued.
“Our fathers believed cooperation would save lives.”
Then his expression changed.
“But peace built on corruption is only silence purchased with fear.”
Clara looked at her father.
He watched without blinking.
Giovanni continued.
“Elena Viti discovered the ledger accidentally.”
Matteo had been telling the truth.
“She wanted out.”
Another pause.
“I offered to help her.”
Alessandro whispered, “You?”
Giovanni looked almost as though he could hear him through time.
“But Victor Hale learned what we were doing.”
Clara's stomach tightened.
The video continued.
“He warned Carbone.”
Then the recording glitched.
Lena stopped it.
“There's another damaged segment.”
“How long?” Clara asked.
“Working on it.”
Alessandro stared at the paused image.
“All these years I thought Giovanni knew and said nothing.”
“He tried to help,” Clara said.
“Yes.”
Her father's voice was heavy.
“And I spent eighteen years hating the wrong dead man.”
Enzo looked toward him.
“My grandfather hated himself enough for both of you.”
Alessandro met his eyes.
Something passed between them.
Not friendship.
But perhaps the beginning of understanding.
Zurich appeared beneath them shortly after noon.
Snow touched distant mountains.
The city looked almost offensively peaceful.
At the bank, Clara entered with Enzo, Alessandro, and a Swiss attorney.
The manager took one look at the physical key and became visibly nervous.
“Ms. Viti, there has been unusual activity involving this account.”
“I know.”
“We may need additional authentication.”
Clara handed him the phrase.
BLUEBIRDS RETURN IN APRIL.
The man disappeared.
Twenty minutes later, he returned.
“You are authorized.”
They entered a private vault.
Rows of steel doors surrounded them.
Box 417 waited near the far wall.
Clara's hands trembled.
Alessandro noticed.
“You don't have to do this today.”
She looked at him.
“Yes, I do.”
The key turned.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a long metal container.
Clara pulled it out.
She opened it.
Photographs.
Ledgers.
Cassette tapes.
Three small hard drives.
Letters.
And a sealed folder bearing her mother's name.
Clara touched it.
Then footsteps sounded outside.
The vault manager appeared.
His face was pale.
“Ms. Viti.”
“What?”
“You have another visitor.”
Alessandro immediately stepped in front of Clara.
“Who?”
The manager swallowed.
“Mrs. Sofia Moretti.”
Enzo froze.
“My mother?”
Sofia entered.
Alone.
Enzo stared.
“Where's Matteo?”
“Safe.”
“You were kidnapped?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Clara's suspicion returned instantly.
Enzo looked devastated.
“You left willingly.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Sofia looked toward the open deposit box.
“Because I needed Clara to reach it before Daniel.”
Alessandro frowned.
“You staged your own disappearance?”
“I allowed Matteo to believe I was in danger.”
Enzo stared at his mother.
“You manipulated your own brother-in-law?”
Her eyes filled.
“To protect you.”
Enzo laughed bitterly.
“There it is.”
Clara looked at him.
The same phrase.
The same excuse.
Sofia understood too.
She closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Enzo stepped backward.
“You all keep saying that word.”
“Vincenzo—”
“Protect.”
His voice rose.
“My father. Grandfather. Matteo. You.”
He pointed toward the box.
“Everybody lies, hides, manipulates, and then calls it protection.”
Clara whispered, “Enzo.”
He looked toward her.
Anger filled his face.
Then he stopped.
He breathed.
Controlled himself.
The lesson from the Sapphire.
Not again.
He lowered his voice.
“Tell me the truth.”
Sofia nodded.
“Daniel contacted me six months ago.”
Everyone became still.
“What did he want?”
“The ledger.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he showed me proof Dario was already working for him.”
Enzo's expression hardened.
“I thought if I cooperated enough, I could learn his plan.”
“Instead?”
“He learned ours.”
Clara asked, “Why bring us here?”
Sofia looked at her.
“Because the ledger has one page Daniel desperately needs.”
“Which page?”
“The list of people still receiving payments today.”
Alessandro frowned.
“The arrangement still exists?”
Sofia nodded.
“It never ended.”
Clara felt chilled.
“Who's on that list?”
Sofia looked toward the locked vault entrance.
“People powerful enough that Daniel believes controlling them would make him untouchable.”
A sudden alarm sounded.
The vault manager shouted from the corridor.
Security doors began closing.
Sofia turned white.
“Daniel.”
Clara grabbed the metal container.
Alessandro said, “Move.”
But before the vault door sealed, a small object slid across the floor.
A phone.
Its screen lit.
Video call.
Clara picked it up.
Daniel Mercer appeared.
Behind him sat Matteo.
Alive.
Daniel smiled.
“Hello, Clara.”
She stared at him.
“You're too late.”
“No.”
He smiled wider.
“I needed you to open the box.”
Clara's stomach dropped.
“What?”
Daniel continued.
“The second you authenticated Elena's account, another dormant account activated.”
Sofia whispered, “Oh God.”
Clara looked at her.
“What account?”
Sofia's face drained.
“Elena didn't store the complete ledger here.”
Daniel nodded from the screen.
“Very good.”
He leaned closer.
“She stored the real one in New York.”
Clara stared.
Daniel smiled.
May you like
“And now I know exactly where.”
