Chapter 12 - The Enemy Inside the Family

The real ledger had been in New York all along.

Hidden beneath everyone's noses.

Clara understood only after reading the last page of her mother's letter.

If the Zurich box is opened using my phrase, the attached trust will automatically transmit instructions to the second custodian.

Second custodian.

Not bank.

Person.

Clara read further.

The custodian was instructed to release a package from a private archive in Manhattan.

The name was omitted.

But Sofia knew.

“Giovanni.”

Enzo stared.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“He's dead.”

“The archive isn't.”

Enzo's expression sharpened.

“Where?”

Sofia looked toward Clara.

“The Sapphire.”

Everyone fell silent.

Clara almost laughed.

Of course.

The entire nightmare had started in the exact building where Elena's final evidence had been hidden.

Enzo said, “My grandfather owned the Sapphire before me.”

Sofia nodded.

“He built a secure archive beneath the original wine cellar.”

“I know about the wine cellar.”

“Not this room.”

Enzo's frustration showed.

“How many secret rooms does my family have?”

Alessandro said dryly, “You get used to it.”

Clara looked at him.

“Not helping.”

They flew home that afternoon.

Daniel had a head start.

But not much.

Lena remotely locked down the Sapphire's building systems.

Marco stationed trusted personnel around the property.

No confrontation.

No unnecessary escalation.

Clara made everyone agree.

When they arrived, the lounge looked exactly as it had the night before.

Crystal glasses.

Dark marble.

Golden lamps.

The table where Enzo had accused her remained empty.

Clara stopped beside it.

Enzo noticed.

Neither spoke.

Then he said quietly, “Every time I look at that table, I see what I did.”

Clara looked at him.

“You should.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

No excuses.

That mattered.

They entered the wine cellar.

Sofia pointed toward a carved wooden panel.

“Giovanni once told me the Moretti crest wasn't decoration.”

Enzo pressed it.

Nothing.

Clara examined the wall.

Her art-history training finally became useful.

“This panel is newer than the others.”

Enzo looked surprised.

“You can tell?”

“Wood staining. Different oxidation.”

She ran her fingers along the edge.

“There's a mechanical release.”

They found it behind a bottle rack.

The wall opened.

A narrow staircase descended.

The archive below was small.

Metal shelves.

Old ledgers.

Locked cabinets.

At the center sat one black case.

Clara approached.

A label read:

ELENA VITI.

Her heart stopped.

She opened it.

Empty.

Enzo swore.

They were too late.

Then a voice came from behind them.

“Not entirely.”

Victor Hale stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Alessandro immediately moved forward.

Victor raised his hands.

“I came alone.”

“Where's Daniel?”

“Gone.”

“With the ledger?”

“Yes.”

Clara stared.

“You helped him.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Again.”

“I was trying to stop him.”

She laughed bitterly.

“People keep doing terrible things around me while claiming they're trying to help.”

Victor lowered his hands.

“You sound like your mother.”

“That isn't a compliment from you.”

He flinched.

“No.”

Alessandro's voice became cold.

“Why are you here?”

Victor removed a folded sheet.

“Because Daniel doesn't have everything.”

He gave it to Clara.

A photocopy of one ledger page.

Rows of names.

Some crossed out.

Some current.

Business leaders.

Officials.

Attorneys.

And one name Clara recognized.

Mitchell Crane.

Her manager.

Clara stared.

“The Sapphire manager?”

Enzo stepped closer.

“What the hell?”

Next to Mitchell's name:

CARBONE NETWORK — ACTIVE CONTACT.

Clara looked toward the stairs.

“Mitchell called me from the kitchen the night the watch disappeared.”

Enzo understood instantly.

“He cleared you away from the table.”

“And created the accusation.”

Victor nodded.

“Mitchell has worked for Daniel for three years.”

Clara's stomach dropped.

Her supposedly ordinary life had never been entirely ordinary.

“Did he hire me because of who I was?”

Victor hesitated.

Clara's voice sharpened.

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

She sat down.

The answer hit harder than expected.

The job.

The random opening.

Mitchell telling her she interviewed well.

All of it had been engineered.

Daniel had placed her inside Moretti territory.

Years after she thought she had escaped everyone's plans.

Enzo crouched several feet away.

He didn't touch her.

“What do you need?”

Clara looked at him.

The question was simple.

Not what should we do.

What do you need?

“I need five minutes.”

He nodded.

Everyone left except Victor.

Clara looked at him.

“You too.”

Victor hesitated.

Then turned.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

Clara stood.

“Did Mom know I would end up at the Sapphire?”

“No.”

“Did she know Daniel?”

“No. He was a child.”

“Then this is not her story anymore.”

Victor turned.

Clara's eyes hardened.

“It's mine.”

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

After he left, Clara remained alone in the hidden archive.

Five minutes became ten.

She thought about Elena.

About freedom.

About how many people had tried to define it for her.

Finally Clara climbed the stairs.

Everyone waited.

Her father.

Enzo.

Sofia.

Marco.

Victor.

Lena on speakerphone.

Clara walked to the center of the lounge.

“Daniel wants leverage.”

Alessandro nodded.

“He has it.”

“No.”

She looked toward Victor.

“He has paper.”

Everyone waited.

“Leverage only works if the truth stays secret.”

Enzo understood first.

“You want to release the ledger.”

“Not everything.”

Clara held up a hand.

“Innocent people could be hurt. Families. Employees. People whose names appear because somebody paid them thirty years ago.”

Alessandro nodded.

“So?”

“We verify.”

Lena's voice came through the speaker.

“I can build a team.”

“Independent attorneys.”

Enzo added, “Forensic accountants.”

“Journalists eventually,” Clara said.

Alessandro stared.

“You want to expose our families.”

Clara met his eyes.

“I want to expose crimes that are still happening.”

Her father remained silent.

“That's not the same thing as destroying you.”

“Some people won't see the difference.”

“I do.”

A long moment.

Then Alessandro nodded.

“All right.”

Enzo did too.

Victor looked shocked.

“You'd risk everything?”

Clara answered.

“That's what freedom costs.”

Suddenly Enzo's phone rang.

Mitchell Crane.

Everyone looked at it.

Enzo answered on speaker.

Mitchell's voice trembled.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Speak.”

“I have Clara.”

Clara frowned.

Enzo stared at her standing directly in front of him.

Mitchell continued.

“She came back to the Sapphire alone.”

Everyone became silent.

Then Clara understood.

Another woman.

Someone dressed like her.

Daniel was manufacturing footage.

Enzo asked, “What do you want?”

Mitchell replied:

“For everyone watching tomorrow morning to believe Vincenzo Moretti killed Alessandro Viti's daughter.”

The line went dead.

Clara stared at Enzo.

The war plan wasn't over.

May you like

Daniel had simply changed the ending.
