Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN WATCHING FOR SEVEN YEARS

The video was grainy.

Recorded on an old office security system.

Date:

October 14, twelve years earlier.

Alexander Bellamy sat across from Richard Holloway.

Both men looked tired.

Grant’s father spoke first.

“If Martin discovers you are moving the trust, he’ll disappear with everything.”

Alexander answered:

“He already knows too much.”

Seraphina watched from Bellamy headquarters with Julian beside her.

Grant sat across the conference table.

Nobody spoke while the recording played.

Richard said:

“Mavis trusts him.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“She always trusted the wrong people because she learned too early that she couldn’t trust me.”

Seraphina felt tears gather.

Her father knew.

Not merely that Evelyn existed.

He knew Evelyn had become Mavis Holloway.

Alexander continued.

“I should have found her sooner.”

Richard replied:

“You didn’t know where Helena’s sister took her.”

“I should have tried harder.”

Seraphina paused the video.

“Helena?”

Julian frowned.

“That was your mother’s name.”

“Yes.”

Grant looked confused.

“What does her sister have to do with Mavis?”

Seraphina’s mind raced.

“My mother had a sister?”

Julian immediately began searching records.

Within minutes, another family secret emerged.

Before Alexander Bellamy married Seraphina’s mother Helena, he had briefly dated Helena’s older sister, Margaret.

Margaret became pregnant.

She disappeared after a family conflict.

The child was Evelyn.

Years later, Alexander married Helena.

Then Seraphina was born.

Mavis was not merely Seraphina’s half sister.

Their mothers were sisters.

The family history was messier than anyone imagined.

Grant leaned back.

“This is insane.”

Seraphina almost laughed.

“That may be the most accurate thing you’ve said all week.”

They resumed the video.

Alexander placed documents on the table.

“Martin diverted distributions from Evelyn’s trust.”

Richard stared.

“How much?”

“Enough that I’m bringing in outside counsel.”

“Mavis will never cooperate if she thinks you’re trying to take her inheritance.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re asking her to trust the father she believes abandoned her.”

Alexander lowered his head.

“I know.”

Richard continued.

“And Martin has been telling her for years that you stole her birthright.”

Alexander looked furious.

“That man is poisoning her.”

Grant paused the recording.

“My father knew Martin.”

Julian nodded.

“Clearly.”

“Why didn’t Dad tell me?”

Seraphina looked at him.

“Maybe for the same reason everyone in this family hid everything.”

Grant met her eyes.

“Fear.”

“Yes.”

They resumed.

Richard’s final words on the recording were chilling.

“If something happens to either of us, the girls need to know.”

Girls.

Seraphina and Evelyn.

Mavis.

Alexander answered:

“I wrote Evelyn a letter.”

Seraphina touched the letter in her bag.

Richard said:

“And Seraphina?”

Alexander smiled sadly.

“She still believes families tell each other the truth.”

The recording ended.

Seraphina could not speak.

Her father had intended to tell her.

He simply ran out of time.

Grant watched her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He nodded.

No attempt to fix.

No unwanted touch.

Just acceptance.

It was the kindest response he had offered her in years.

Julian broke the silence.

“This strengthens the case against Martin.”

Grant looked at him.

“How?”

“It shows the two company founders believed he was diverting trust assets twelve years ago.”

“Can we prove it?”

“Not from a conversation alone.”

Seraphina wiped her eyes.

“But it tells us where to look.”

She called Mavis.

“Come to Bellamy headquarters.”

Mavis hesitated.

“Why?”

“I found our fathers.”

Twenty-five minutes later, Mavis watched the video.

She did not cry immediately.

She simply stared.

When Alexander said he should have found her sooner, Mavis stopped breathing.

When he said Martin was poisoning her, her hands began trembling.

When he mentioned the letter, she broke.

Seraphina sat beside her.

For several minutes neither woman spoke.

Finally Mavis whispered:

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He cared.”

“Yes.”

“I wasted all those years.”

Seraphina looked at her older sister.

“You were lied to.”

“I wanted to believe the lies.”

The distinction mattered.

Mavis covered her face.

“Martin told me Alexander called me a mistake.”

Seraphina’s expression changed.

“When?”

“All my life.”

“How would Martin know?”

“His mother knew Margaret.”

Seraphina realized something.

Martin’s manipulation had begun long before the companies.

Long before Grant.

He had grown up with access to Evelyn’s grievance.

Then built a career from it.

Mavis whispered:

“I treated you terribly because I thought you were proof that he replaced me.”

Seraphina swallowed.

“I cannot give you those years back.”

“I know.”

“And you cannot give me mine.”

Mavis nodded.

Then for the first time she said the words Seraphina had never heard.

“I’m sorry.”

No explanation.

No justification.

Just apology.

Seraphina did not forgive her immediately.

But she believed her.

That was a beginning.

Later that afternoon, prosecutors searched Martin’s Miami residence.

Inside a fireproof safe, they found passports.

Account codes.

Copies of Bellamy trust documents.

And dozens of audio files.

One file was labeled:

G.H. — DELANEY PLAN.

Grant listened with Seraphina.

Martin’s voice:

“You don’t need to seduce him. Grant Holloway seduces himself. Make him feel admired. His wife makes him feel ordinary.”

Delaney’s voice responded:

“I’m not sleeping with my boss for you.”

Martin laughed.

“I didn’t ask you to. I’m telling you where the weakness is.”

Grant stopped the recording.

His face was white.

Delaney had known Martin was manipulating him?

Seraphina felt sick.

“Play it.”

The recording continued.

Delaney said:

“What exactly do you want?”

“Separation.”

“Why?”

“Because Seraphina Holloway is dangerous while emotionally tied to Grant.”

Delaney laughed.

“She barely attends company dinners.”

Martin replied:

“That is because you have no idea who she is.”

Silence.

Then Delaney:

“Who is she?”

Martin:

“The reason Grant Holloway has never truly failed.”

Seraphina looked at Grant.

Grant could barely breathe.

The recording continued.

Delaney whispered:

“Bellamy?”

Martin laughed.

“Now you’re learning.”

Grant stopped the audio.

He stared at the screen.

Delaney had known.

Not for eight months.

Not accidentally.

From before their affair began.

She knew Seraphina controlled Bellamy.

And she had walked into the Palm Beach mansion smiling anyway.
