Chapter 12 - A RECORDING NOBODY WAS SUPPOSED TO HEAR

Delaney arrived at Bellamy headquarters before sunset.

She knew why she had been summoned.

Her expression told Seraphina that immediately.

Grant remained in the room.

Delaney stopped when she saw him.

“What did you find?”

Grant pressed play.

Martin’s voice filled the conference room.

Delaney closed her eyes.

When the recording ended, nobody spoke.

Grant stared at her.

“You knew.”

Delaney shook her head.

“Not everything.”

“You knew Seraphina was Bellamy.”

“Eventually.”

“You told us you didn’t connect it.”

“I lied.”

Grant laughed.

The sound was broken.

“Why?”

Delaney looked at Seraphina.

“Because I was scared.”

“Of Martin?”

“Yes.”

“Or of losing whatever deal you made with him?”

Delaney’s eyes filled.

“Both.”

Seraphina remained strangely calm.

“When did you learn who I was?”

“About fourteen months ago.”

“Before the affair?”

“Yes.”

Grant looked away.

Seraphina asked:

“What did Martin promise?”

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Initially five hundred thousand.”

“For?”

“Getting close to Grant.”

Grant flinched.

Delaney continued.

“Then two million if he left you.”

Grant stood.

“So none of it was real.”

Delaney looked at him.

“At first?”

Her voice cracked.

“No.”

Grant laughed again.

Seraphina recognized the cruelty of the moment.

He deserved accountability.

He did not deserve to be emotionally manipulated into a relationship for someone else’s financial scheme.

“But later?” Grant asked.

Delaney cried.

“Later I fell in love with you.”

Grant shook his head.

“Don’t.”

“It’s true.”

“Nothing you say matters.”

She lowered her head.

Seraphina finally spoke.

“Why did Martin want the divorce?”

Delaney wiped her eyes.

“He believed your marriage created a problem with several Bellamy family trusts.”

“How?”

“He said Grant could eventually claim marital rights to distributions.”

Julian interrupted.

“That would be limited.”

“I don’t understand the law,” Delaney said. “Martin said he needed Seraphina isolated.”

“Why?”

“He wanted her to make an emotional mistake.”

Seraphina frowned.

“What kind?”

“Sell assets. Remove trustees. Change family agreements.”

Grant looked toward Seraphina.

“He wanted you angry.”

“Yes.”

Delaney nodded.

“He believed if Grant humiliated you publicly enough, you’d react impulsively.”

Seraphina thought about the gala.

Her decision to begin governance review.

Had Martin anticipated that?

Possibly.

“What happened to the plan when you discovered Martin was stealing?”

Delaney answered:

“I panicked.”

“When?”

“About four months ago.”

“How did you discover it?”

“He used my credentials to request documents.”

“What documents?”

“Bellamy partnership structures.”

“Did you confront him?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He reminded me that taking money to manipulate Grant could be interpreted badly.”

Blackmail.

Again.

Martin collected sins and converted them into control.

Seraphina leaned back.

“Why give me the flash drive at the gala?”

Delaney looked at Grant.

“Because Martin told me that night was the end.”

Grant frowned.

“The end of what?”

“He said Bellamy would make an announcement that caused Grant’s lenders to panic.”

Seraphina exchanged a look with Julian.

Martin knew about the gala.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Delaney continued.

“He told me after the announcement I should convince Grant to move money from several accounts.”

Grant stared.

“To where?”

“Accounts Martin controlled.”

Grant swore.

The plan became clear.

Martin expected chaos.

He expected the Bellamy relationship to fracture.

He expected Grant to panic.

Then, using Delaney, he intended to drain money under the pretense of protecting it.

Seraphina whispered:

“He underestimated one thing.”

Julian looked at her.

“What?”

“He thought I would try to destroy Grant.”

Grant’s eyes met hers.

She continued.

“But I only stopped protecting him.”

That difference may have ruined Martin’s plan.

Instead of immediately terminating every partnership, Seraphina initiated an audit.

The audit exposed him.

Delaney reached into her handbag.

“There’s something else.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“Of course there is.”

She placed a key on the table.

“Martin rented a storage box under my name.”

Julian immediately stood.

“Where?”

“A private vault company in Brickell.”

“What is inside?”

“I never opened it.”

“When did he give you the key?”

“Three months ago.”

“Why?”

“He said if anything happened, I should destroy whatever was inside.”

Grant stared at her.

“And you kept it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Delaney looked at him.

“Because by then I was afraid of him.”

Two hours later, under attorney supervision and with investigators present, the vault box was opened.

Inside were no diamonds.

No cash.

No passports.

Only one thick red file.

On its cover:

PROJECT ECLIPSE.

The documents showed a plan to acquire voting influence over Bellamy Holdings using debt instruments, trust challenges, distressed asset purchases and manipulated family litigation.

Martin had spent more than a decade preparing it.

At the center was a flowchart.

Alexander Bellamy.

Evelyn Bellamy.

Seraphina Bellamy.

Grant Holloway.

Delaney Cross.

Each name connected by arrows.

At the bottom:

CONTROL EVENT.

Seraphina turned the page.

The final phase had a date.

October 3.

One week away.

Grant read the heading.

PHASE FIVE: REMOVE S.B.

His face changed.

“Remove?”

Julian read the surrounding text.

“Not physically.”

Seraphina exhaled.

“Corporate removal.”

“Yes.”

The plan intended to challenge Seraphina’s control over multiple Bellamy trusts by claiming she had concealed conflicts of interest created through her marriage and secret investments in Holloway Meridian.

Grant stared.

“He was using us.”

Julian nodded.

“The undisclosed financing, marital relationship and trust connections could be packaged to create litigation, regulatory scrutiny and lender pressure.”

Seraphina understood.

Martin did not need to win every lawsuit.

He only needed to destabilize Bellamy long enough to buy influence through distressed instruments.

Grant looked sick.

“My company was bait.”

“Partly,” Julian said.

“And my affair?”

“Leverage.”

Grant sat down.

The word destroyed whatever remained of his ego.

His brilliant career.

His glamorous mistress.

His independent empire.

Martin had viewed all of them as weaknesses to exploit.

Seraphina looked at Delaney.

“You will cooperate fully.”

“Yes.”

“You may still face consequences.”

“I know.”

“No immunity promises from me.”

“I understand.”

Grant turned toward Delaney.

For a moment they looked at each other like strangers.

Then Grant said:

“Was there ever one day with me that wasn’t part of this?”

Delaney cried.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“All the days after I wanted out but stayed because I loved you.”

Grant looked away.

“That somehow makes it worse.”

Delaney nodded.

“I know.”

She left with investigators.

Seraphina gathered the Project Eclipse documents.

Grant remained behind.

“What happens to her?”

“Not my decision.”

“And me?”

“Also not entirely my decision.”

He nodded.

Then looked at the divorce envelope still visible in Seraphina’s bag.

“What about that?”

“That decision is mine.”

Grant looked down.

“I know.”

Seraphina walked toward the door.

“Sera.”

She stopped.

“If Martin had never existed…”

He struggled to finish.

“Would we have been okay?”

Seraphina considered it.

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

“Why?”

“Martin exploited cracks.”

She looked at him.

“He did not create them.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

That was the truth neither could escape.

The next morning, authorities formally charged Martin Keene with multiple financial offenses connected to forged documents and fraudulent transfers.

But as journalists surrounded the courthouse, Martin smiled.

Then told one reporter:

“Seraphina Bellamy should ask her attorney what happened in Paris in 2011.”

The sentence went viral within an hour.

Seraphina had never been to Paris in 2011.

May you like

But Julian had.

And when she asked him about it, the man who had protected her family for twelve years suddenly refused to meet her eyes.
