Chapter 15 - The Secret Mrs. Patel Had Been Keeping

Mrs. Patel asked Claire to meet her in the kitchen after midnight.
That alone was suspicious.
Mrs. Patel believed midnight existed exclusively for sleeping, emergencies, and removing pies from ovens.
Claire arrived in pajamas and a borrowed cardigan.
Roman was already there.
“So you were summoned too?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know why?”
“No.”
Mrs. Patel entered carrying an old metal cash box.
She placed it on the table.
“I should have done this years ago.”
Claire sat.
“What is it?”
Mrs. Patel opened the box.
Letters.
Photographs.
A small notebook.
One envelope bore Claire's father's handwriting.
Claire stopped breathing.
“Where did you get that?”
Mrs. Patel looked ashamed.
“Your father came here.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Claire stared.
“He knew the DeLucas?”
“No.”
Mrs. Patel explained.
Thomas Bennett had discovered Granite Harbor's fraud shortly before his death.
He traced one shell company to Northstar.
Then discovered Northstar was negotiating with DeLuca businesses.
He came to the estate hoping to warn someone.
Roman had been traveling.
Salvatore met him instead.
Claire felt cold.
“What happened?”
“Your father left documents.”
Mrs. Patel looked at Roman.
“Your uncle told me to throw them away.”
Roman's expression hardened.
“You didn't.”
“No.”
“Why never tell me?”
“Salvatore said Mr. Bennett was attempting extortion. Then two weeks later I learned he had died.”
Claire's eyes filled.
Her father had known.
He hadn't simply left them with debt.
He had been trying to stop it.
Mrs. Patel handed Claire the letter.
She opened it.
Claire—
If you ever read this, then I failed to fix something I should never have involved you in.
Lily needed help and I panicked.
But the people collecting from us are not the people I borrowed from. The original account was settled. Someone purchased our records afterward and created a new balance.
Don't pay them.
Protect Lily.
And please know I never wanted you to carry this after me.
Dad.
Claire couldn't see the page anymore.
Tears blurred everything.
Lily had come quietly into the kitchen behind her.
She read over Claire's shoulder.
Then both sisters cried.
Roman stood back.
Some grief deserved privacy.
Eventually Claire wiped her face.
“He knew.”
Mrs. Patel nodded.
“He tried.”
“All these years I thought…”
Lily squeezed her hand.
“I know.”
Mrs. Patel opened the notebook.
Thomas had recorded dates.
Names.
Granite Harbor contacts.
One entry:
S. DELUCA KNOWS MERCER IS BEHIND THIS. REFUSED TO HELP.
Roman read it twice.
His uncle had known the Bennett family was being defrauded before Claire ever worked at DeLuca House.
Salvatore had later watched Claire enter the estate.
Recognized her surname.
And said nothing.
Perhaps that was why Vivian began investigating her so quickly.
Claire hadn't randomly become a threat.
Her father had made her one years earlier.
Roman looked at Mrs. Patel.
“Why hire Claire?”
Mrs. Patel looked at her.
“Because of Thomas.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“After he died, I saw your application.”
“You knew?”
“I remembered the surname.”
“You gave me the job because you felt guilty?”
“At first.”
Claire looked hurt.
Mrs. Patel immediately continued.
“Then you became the best employee I had, unfortunately.”
Claire laughed through tears.
Mrs. Patel smiled.
“I kept you because you belonged here.”
Roman's gaze moved to Claire.
The sentence meant more than Mrs. Patel intended.
Lily noticed.
Of course she did.
She looked between Claire and Roman.
Then smiled slowly.
Claire saw it.
“Don't.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“You're thinking loudly.”
Roman seemed amused.
Mrs. Patel pretended not to understand.
For the first time, the tragedy surrounding Thomas Bennett became something else.
Not an ending.
A thread connecting everything.
His desperate attempt to save Lily.
His discovery of the fraud.
His visit to DeLuca House.
Mrs. Patel's decision to preserve his documents.
Claire's later employment there.
The forgotten recording.
The key.
All roads had converged.
And now the full case could be proved.
Three days later, federal prosecutors announced charges against senior Granite Harbor executives.
Victor Mercer remained detained overseas.
Salvatore was charged with conspiracy, fraud, witness intimidation, and obstruction.
Vivian faced separate charges connected to Claire's attempted abduction, the forged medical-transfer documents, bribery, and witness tampering.
Damian accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
Marcus did the same.
The $184,000 debt disappeared officially.
Then something Claire hadn't expected happened.
A court-appointed administrator reviewed Granite Harbor's accounts.
Claire received a letter.
RESTITUTION ELIGIBILITY.
Every fraudulent payment she had made might be returned.
Lily read the estimated amount.
“Sixty-two thousand plus interest.”
Claire stared.
“I don't know what to do with that.”
Lily grinned.
“Therapy bill?”
“Already covered.”
“Car?”
“I have one.”
“It sounds like a blender full of nails.”
“It has personality.”
Roman entered.
Lily pointed at him.
“Tell her she needs a new car.”
Roman looked at Claire.
“She needs a new car.”
“Both of you are unbearable.”
Lily smiled.
“You like one of us.”
Claire nearly dropped her coffee.
Roman looked pleased.
Mrs. Patel suddenly became fascinated by dishes.
“Lily.”
“What?”
“Stop.”
“You haven't denied it.”
Roman sat.
Claire glared at him.
“Don't encourage her.”
“I haven't said anything.”
“You're smiling.”
“I do that occasionally.”
“Not often enough for plausible deniability.”
Lily laughed.
It was ridiculous.
Domestic.
Warm.
Everything Christmas Eve hadn't been.
Then Roman's attorney called.
The Mercer family had requested a private meeting.
Vivian wanted to speak with Claire.
Claire's smile disappeared.
Roman immediately said, “No.”
Claire looked at him.
He corrected himself.
“Your choice.”
She appreciated that.
“What does she want?”
Daniel answered through the phone.
“To make a deal.”
Claire considered.
“Will it help the case?”
“Possibly.”
Roman shook his head.
“You don't owe her anything.”
Claire looked at her father's letter.
No.
She didn't.
But for the first time, Vivian no longer frightened her.
“Set the meeting.”
Roman stared.
“Claire.”
“She threatened Lily because she thought fear would keep me quiet.”
Claire folded the letter carefully.
“I want her to see it didn't.”

And the next morning, Claire Bennett walked into a federal conference room to face the woman who had sent her into the snow.
