Chapter 17 - Vivian Makes One Final Move

The case should have ended there.

It almost did.

Then Victor Mercer escaped extradition custody during a medical transfer in Switzerland.

For twenty-two hours no one knew where he was.

Roman was informed at 3:12 a.m.

By 3:20, DeLuca House was locked down.

Claire found him in the security room.

“What happened?”

He told her.

Her face paled.

“Lily.”

“Protected.”

“Vivian?”

“Federal custody now.”

“Salvatore?”

“Also secured.”

“Then who would Victor come after?”

Roman looked at her.

Claire understood.

Her.

Not because she was the most important witness legally.

Because she had become symbolic.

The maid whose father's file helped expose Granite Harbor.

The woman who survived Christmas Eve.

The person Roman chose over the Mercer alliance.

Claire refused to hide in a basement.

Roman didn't argue.

He moved everyone to a secure interior wing.

At 7:40 that morning, Swiss authorities discovered Victor had used a false ambulance service.

At 10:15, his private jet records suggested a flight plan toward Canada.

At noon, nothing.

Then Lily received a message.

Dad would be ashamed of what Claire destroyed.

Attached was a photograph of Thomas Bennett.

Claire stared.

Only someone with Granite Harbor archives would have it.

Victor.

Roman called investigators.

The message was traced through multiple servers.

No location.

At 2:03 p.m., another message arrived.

THIS ENDS WHERE IT STARTED.

Claire looked through the window.

The carriage house.

Roman understood simultaneously.

“No.”

“He wants us there.”

“Exactly.”

“Then investigators can be waiting.”

Roman looked at her.

“You are not bait.”

“I know.”

“You're thinking about it.”

“I am.”

“No.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Choice, remember?”

“Not when the choice is insane.”

But federal agents agreed on a controlled operation.

Victor believed Claire had access to original ledgers he needed destroyed.

They sent a message from Claire's phone.

I HAVE COPIES. COME GET THEM.

Victor responded.

ALONE.

Roman hated every second.

Claire never entered the carriage house alone.

Agents filled surrounding buildings.

Roman remained in the greenhouse with Gabriel.

Claire wore a hidden microphone.

At 5:42 p.m., a vehicle approached.

Victor stepped out.

No army.

No bodyguards.

Just an older man whose empire had collapsed.

Claire waited inside.

He entered.

For the first time, she saw him without a tuxedo.

No champagne.

No powerful friends.

He looked tired.

“You look like your father,” he said.

Claire felt anger.

“You knew him.”

“He caused problems.”

“He discovered your fraud.”

“He didn't understand business.”

“Neither did I.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“You caused bigger problems.”

“Good.”

His smile vanished.

“Where are the documents?”

“Safe.”

“Give them to me.”

“No.”

Victor moved closer.

Agents listened.

Roman's hands clenched.

Claire stayed calm.

“You built Granite Harbor to trap people.”

Victor scoffed.

“People signed contracts.”

“My father didn't sign yours.”

Victor paused.

“You bought settled accounts and created balances.”

Silence.

Claire knew she'd hit the truth.

“Say it.”

Victor laughed quietly.

“You want a confession?”

“I want to understand how someone does that.”

“Simple.”

He looked at her.

“Desperate people pay longer than wealthy people.”

Roman heard the sentence through Claire's microphone.

So did federal agents.

Victor continued.

“A wealthy borrower hires lawyers. Poor families become afraid. Fear is reliable.”

Claire thought of every payment.

Every sleepless night.

Every time she checked Lily's door.

“You were right about one thing.”

Victor raised an eyebrow.

“I was afraid.”

She stepped closer.

“I'm not anymore.”

Victor's face changed.

He realized.

The room was too quiet.

Claire wasn't alone.

He turned toward the door.

Federal agents entered.

“Victor Mercer, hands where we can see them.”

For one second Victor looked at Claire with pure hatred.

Then Roman entered behind them.

Victor laughed.

“There he is.”

Roman said nothing.

“You threw away an empire for her.”

Roman looked at Claire.

Then back at Victor.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I stopped you from stealing one.”

Victor was arrested.

No gunfight.

No blood.

No dramatic escape.

Just handcuffs.

Paperwork.

Consequences.

As he was taken away, Claire stepped outside.

Snow remained in patches beside the carriage path.

Roman joined her.

“It ended where it started,” she said.

“Yes.”

Claire looked at the place where he'd found her.

Her chest tightened.

Roman noticed.

“We can remove the carriage house.”

She almost laughed.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Then he gets to own that memory.”

Roman looked at her.

Claire took his hand.

“I'd rather change it.”

That evening, Lily asked the question everyone had avoided.

“So are you two officially together?”

Claire choked on tea.

Roman answered calmly.

“Yes.”

Claire stared.

“We didn't discuss terminology.”

Lily grinned.

Roman looked at Claire.

“Would you prefer ‘acceptably kissing’?”

Mrs. Patel laughed so hard she had to sit down.

Claire covered her face.

The worst chapter of their lives had finally closed.

May you like

And somehow, on the other side of it, there was laughter.
