Chapter 2 - The Camera They Forgot

The security officer's name was Daniel Ruiz.

He had worked at Mercy General for eleven years, and he had the steady demeanor of a man who had seen every version of human panic walk through emergency-room doors.

He didn't take me to the security office immediately.

First, he asked Emily a question.

"Ma'am, do you feel safe with those people here?"

Emily looked at Ethan.

"No."

That one word changed the atmosphere.

Ruiz touched the radio clipped to his shoulder.

"Security to east corridor."

Ethan scoffed.

"This is ridiculous."

Two hospital security officers appeared within moments.

Margaret lifted her chin.

"Do you know who my husband is?"

Ruiz didn't blink.

"No, ma'am."

Brandon almost laughed.

"You might want to find out."

Ruiz looked at him.

"I don't need to know who your father is to enforce hospital policy."

I liked Daniel Ruiz immediately.

Ethan stepped forward.

"I am her husband."

"And she's an adult patient who said she doesn't want you near her."

"You can't keep me from my wife."

"Actually," Ruiz said, "right now, I can."

Emily exhaled.

It sounded like she'd been holding that breath for years.

A nurse pulled a privacy curtain around part of the gurney.

Margaret pointed toward me.

"She's poisoning Emily against her husband."

Emily's voice came from behind the curtain.

"My mother didn't make Ethan hit me."

Margaret went silent.

Ruiz asked me to follow him.

Before leaving, I leaned toward Emily.

"I'm going twenty feet away. You'll be able to see the door."

She nodded.

That detail mattered.

After being locked inside a building, even twenty feet could feel like abandonment.

The security room was small.

Four monitors covered the wall.

Ruiz sat down.

"Your daughter arrived at 9:47."

He clicked a file.

Video appeared.

Emily stumbled through the emergency entrance.

Barefoot.

I stopped breathing.

She was clutching her side.

A stranger was helping her.

"Who is that?"

"Rideshare driver."

The video continued.

The driver tried supporting Emily while calling for assistance.

Then another vehicle appeared.

Black Mercedes SUV.

Ethan climbed out.

Thirty seconds later, Margaret's sedan arrived.

Then Brandon.

They hadn't brought Emily to the hospital.

They had followed her.

Ruiz changed camera angles.

Ethan entered the lobby.

There was no audio.

But his body language told enough.

He pointed toward Emily.

A nurse blocked him.

Brandon arrived and grabbed Ethan's shoulder.

Margaret walked in last.

She immediately began talking to hospital personnel.

Ruiz froze the footage.

"That's not the important part."

He rewound.

Emily's rideshare driver was visible again.

The man was holding something.

A phone.

"Whose phone?"

"We don't know."

Ruiz enlarged the image.

The driver handed it to the admitting nurse.

Emily's eyes widened when I showed her later.

"That's not mine."

"What is it?"

"I don't know."

"How did you call the ride?"

She swallowed.

"I didn't."

That changed everything.

Emily told us what happened.

She had been locked in the Prescott guesthouse for nearly four hours.

No phone.

No purse.

No keys.

She screamed until her throat hurt.

Nobody came.

Then sometime after nine, she heard glass break near the rear of the building.

A woman appeared outside.

One of the Prescott housekeepers.

Maria Alvarez.

Maria unlocked a utility door.

"She told me to run."

"Where is Maria now?"

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Did she give you the phone?"

"No."

Emily explained that when she reached the road outside the Prescott estate, a rideshare vehicle was already waiting.

The driver opened the passenger door.

"He said Maria ordered it."

My mind started assembling the timeline.

Maria had helped Emily escape.

Maria had arranged transportation.

And Maria had apparently sent something with the driver.

Ruiz called the emergency department.

The phone was still in the property locker.

Five minutes later, a nurse brought it.

Cheap Android.

No passcode.

There was only one video on it.

I looked at Emily.

"Do you want me to play this?"

She nodded.

I pressed the screen.

The video was dark and shaky.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then voices.

Brandon.

"...should've taken her keys earlier."

Ethan answered.

"She isn't going anywhere."

Margaret's voice came next.

"If she files for divorce, she becomes a problem."

Emily covered her mouth.

The camera shifted.

Through a narrow gap, we could see Ethan standing outside a white guesthouse.

Then Margaret.

Then Brandon.

Margaret said something that made every person in the room go still.

"Keep the door locked until she understands what happens to people who embarrass this family."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then another sound came from the phone.

A notification.

New message.

Unknown number.

Ruiz looked at me.

I opened it.

COLONEL HART, MY NAME IS MARIA ALVAREZ. I WORKED FOR THE PRESCOTTS. THEY KNOW I HELPED EMILY. I DON'T THINK I'M SAFE.

A second message arrived.

AND THIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME.
