Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Laughed

Brandon surrendered through his attorney the next morning.

The television footage showed him entering the courthouse wearing a charcoal suit and expressionless face.

Emily turned off the screen.

"I don't want to watch."

So we didn't.

Healing, I discovered, wasn't dramatic.

It happened in tiny decisions.

Emily choosing breakfast.

Emily walking outside alone.

Emily leaving her bedroom door closed for ten minutes without panicking.

Emily hearing a car in the driveway and not assuming Ethan had come for her.

Those victories would never make headlines.

They mattered more than headlines.

Meanwhile, investigators reconstructed the night.

Emily had announced she wanted a divorce during a family dinner.

Ethan followed her upstairs.

An argument began.

Emily packed a suitcase.

Ethan took her phone.

She tried leaving.

He grabbed her.

Later, Brandon helped move her belongings away from the main entrance.

Margaret arrived.

Then Emily was confined in the guesthouse.

The defense challenged everything.

They called it a misunderstanding.

A family intervention.

A distressed woman's distorted recollection.

But smart locks don't become confused.

Video doesn't become embarrassed.

Messages don't care about social status.

And Maria had saved more.

One recording contained Ethan saying:

"Once she calms down, she'll understand."

Brandon responded:

"And if she doesn't?"

Margaret answered:

"Then we handle her the way we handled Rachel."

Rachel heard that recording.

She called Emily afterward.

For several seconds neither woman spoke.

Then Rachel said:

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For taking the money."

Emily shook her head.

"You survived."

Rachel began crying.

"So will you."

The investigation moved beyond one violent evening.

Financial records showed payments to private investigators.

Public-relations consultants.

Former employees.

Several payments were perfectly legitimate.

Others raised questions.

Then investigators found a payment connected to Rachel's old employer.

The date matched the week she had been falsely accused.

Margaret's influence suddenly looked less like boasting.

It looked like evidence.

Yet the greatest blow came from inside the family.

Charles Prescott, Ethan and Brandon's father, returned from Europe.

Everyone expected him to defend them.

Instead, he hired his own attorney.

Then requested a meeting with prosecutors.

Margaret reportedly learned about it from the news.

That evening, Emily and I were eating soup when her attorney called.

"Charles Prescott is cooperating."

Emily put down her spoon.

"Why?"

"We don't know yet."

"What does he know?"

Her attorney paused.

"Apparently quite a lot."

The following morning, Charles turned over access to a private corporate archive.

Inside investigators found years of emails.

One subject line immediately stood out.

EMILY EXIT STRATEGY.

It had been created eight months before Emily ever asked Ethan for a divorce.
