Chapter 12 - Crown Street Chooses a King

The old men arrived first.

Not old in the ordinary sense.

Old by Crown Street standards.

Men in their fifties and sixties who had survived decades in a business where retirement usually happened in prison or cemeteries.

Roman knew every name.

Sal Moretti.

Darius Cole.

Peter Vance.

Hector Ruiz.

Men who had once stood behind Dominic Vale.

Men who had watched Roman grow from a frightened teenager into the person newspapers called a king.

Now they requested a meeting.

Victor read the message twice.

"They say neutral ground."

Roman laughed.

"There's no neutral ground."

Naomi sat at the breakfast table feeding Leo a bottle.

He was finally accepting formula mixed with donor milk.

Progress.

Tiny but meaningful.

"Don't go."

Roman looked at her.

"I have to."

"No, you don't."

"They're threatening employees."

"Call federal agents."

Roman's mouth tightened.

"They won't talk if law enforcement arrives."

"Sounds like their problem."

Roman smiled.

"You've become comfortable dismissing generations of organized crime."

Naomi shrugged.

"Babies destroy your sense of intimidation."

Leo burped loudly.

Roman looked at him.

"Evidence."

Victor paced.

"If Roman doesn't go, they may interpret it as weakness."

Naomi looked at him.

"And?"

Victor frowned.

"And that creates problems."

Naomi sighed.

"You two keep using old rules while claiming you're building a new life."

Roman stared.

She continued.

"If Crown Street only respects fear, let it stop respecting you."

That sentence landed.

Roman sat across from her.

"You think it's that simple?"

"No."

Naomi adjusted Leo's blanket.

"I think it's that difficult."

Roman looked toward Victor.

Victor slowly nodded.

"She's right."

Roman groaned.

Naomi smiled.

"Again."

Victor continued.

"If you attend, you reinforce the idea that their approval matters."

Roman leaned back.

"Then we don't attend."

Instead, Evelyn Hart invited Sal Moretti and the others to a federal building.

They declined.

Roman sent one written message.

I am finished. Anyone operating under the Vale name does so without my protection, money, or authority.

By afternoon, half a dozen long-time associates defected.

Two threatened him.

One begged him to reconsider.

Three asked whether they could transition into legitimate operations.

Roman allowed the last group.

Naomi watched an empire become paperwork.

It was less dramatic than movies suggested.

No gunfights.

No men shouting in warehouses.

Contracts.

Accounts frozen.

Employees reassigned.

Licenses reviewed.

Security teams dissolved.

Banks asking questions.

Attorneys billing by the hour.

Roman looked increasingly exhausted.

At five, Naomi found him asleep at the dining table.

His head rested beside a stack of legal documents.

She took his phone from his hand.

The screen showed the nursery camera.

Jude sleeping.

Naomi covered Roman with a jacket.

He woke immediately.

"Babies?"

"Fine."

He sat upright.

"What time?"

"Five twelve."

"I slept?"

"Eleven minutes."

"Luxury."

Naomi shook her head.

"You'll collapse."

"Later."

"That's not a schedule."

Roman looked at her.

"When did you become responsible for me?"

"I'm not."

"Good."

She pointed toward the couch.

"Sleep."

He smiled.

"Contradictory."

"Roman."

"Yes, ma'am."

He actually obeyed.

Naomi sat nearby editing a manuscript while he slept.

For an hour, the house felt almost normal.

Then the phone rang.

Victor answered.

His face changed.

"Where?"

Roman woke immediately.

"What?"

Victor lowered the phone.

"Gabriel surfaced."

Roman stood.

"Where?"

"Baltimore."

Naomi froze.

"Why Baltimore?"

Victor looked at her.

"St. Agnes."

The community center.

Where Naomi met Elise.

Roman grabbed his coat.

Naomi stood.

"I'm coming."

"No."

She glared.

Roman immediately corrected.

"I mean—I would prefer if you didn't."

"Better."

Victor nearly laughed.

Roman continued.

"Why do you need to go?"

"Because he chose that location for a reason."

Evelyn agreed.

Federal agents reached St. Agnes first.

Gabriel was inside.

Alone.

Sitting in the same room where Naomi had met Elise.

He had requested Roman.

No weapons found.

No hostages.

Still dangerous.

Roman entered wearing a recording device.

Naomi watched through a remote feed in a vehicle outside.

Gabriel Shaw was nearly seventy.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

He looked more like a senator than someone accused of arranging a fatal crash.

"Roman."

Roman remained standing.

"Gabriel."

"You look like your father."

"I've spent weeks hoping I don't."

Gabriel smiled sadly.

"That's Elise talking."

"No."

Roman looked toward the folding chairs.

"That's me."

Gabriel's expression changed.

"She ruined you."

Roman almost laughed.

"She saved me."

"From what?"

"Becoming you."

Gabriel's face hardened.

Naomi watched Roman breathe slowly.

Old Roman might have attacked.

New Roman stood still.

Gabriel said, "Dominic built something men feared."

"He built something his grandson nearly died for."

"Power has costs."

"Children shouldn't pay them."

Gabriel shook his head.

"You always were soft beneath the tattoos."

Roman smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

Gabriel seemed disappointed.

"You think prosecutors will let you walk away?"

"No."

"You think Naomi Bell will wait while you're in prison?"

Roman's face changed slightly.

Naomi's heart jumped.

Gabriel noticed.

"Ah."

Roman said nothing.

Gabriel smiled.

"Elise dies and another woman appears."

Roman's voice became dangerous.

"Do not speak about them."

"Why? Because I found the nerve?"

Roman clenched his hands.

Naomi whispered at the monitor.

"Don't."

As though he heard, Roman relaxed them.

Gabriel's smile vanished.

"You won't even hit me."

"No."

"Then you are not Dominic's son."

Roman stepped closer.

"That's the first kind thing you've said."

Gabriel's face twisted.

For the first time, he looked angry.

"You abandoned everything your father built."

"No."

Roman's voice remained calm.

"I'm deciding what my sons inherit."

"You think restaurants and shipping companies will protect them?"

"No."

"Fear protects blood."

Roman shook his head.

"Fear killed Elise."

Silence.

Gabriel's expression flickered.

Roman saw it.

"Tell me what happened."

Gabriel looked away.

"You know."

"I know you ordered another vehicle."

Gabriel's face became still.

Roman continued.

"Kincaid planned a kidnapping."

"He would've controlled you."

"So you killed her."

"I prevented worse."

Roman's composure cracked.

"She was my wife."

"She was compromising the family."

Naomi covered her mouth.

Roman stood perfectly still.

Gabriel continued.

"Dominic would've understood."

"My father is dead."

"His principles aren't."

Roman looked around the community room.

Then at the chair where Elise had once sat with Naomi.

"Good."

Gabriel frowned.

Roman continued.

"Then they can die here too."

Federal agents entered.

Gabriel didn't resist.

As he was handcuffed, he looked at Roman.

"Kincaid will kill you."

Roman answered, "Maybe."

"Then what was this for?"

Roman looked toward the door.

"Breakfast."

Gabriel stared.

Roman walked out.

Naomi met him in the hallway.

He looked shaken.

But not broken.

"You okay?"

"No."

"Good answer."

He laughed once.

Then his expression changed.

"Did you hear everything?"

"Yes."

"About you?"

Naomi nodded.

Roman looked embarrassed.

"Ignore him."

"Done."

They walked toward the exit.

Outside, federal vehicles surrounded the center.

Reporters had already gathered.

Someone shouted Roman's name.

Another shouted Naomi's.

Roman stopped.

His security team moved forward.

Naomi expected him to hide.

Instead, Roman turned toward the cameras.

Victor whispered, "What are you doing?"

Roman stepped to the microphones.

"For years," he said, "people connected my name to fear."

The crowd quieted.

Roman continued.

"Some of those stories were exaggerated."

He paused.

"Some weren't."

Victor closed his eyes.

Naomi stared.

Roman continued.

"I am cooperating fully with federal authorities regarding criminal activity connected to businesses I controlled."

Reporters exploded with questions.

Roman raised a hand.

"My wife, Elise Vale, died trying to protect our sons and force me to face what my life had become."

His voice shook.

"I should have listened sooner."

Naomi's eyes filled.

"I will spend the rest of my life accepting whatever consequences come from that failure."

Then he stepped away.

No spin.

No public relations language.

No denial.

Just truth.

Later that evening, news alerts spread worldwide.

ROMAN VALE ADMITS CRIMINAL CONNECTIONS.

CROWN STREET KING COOPERATES WITH FEDERAL PROSECUTORS.

VALE EMPIRE COLLAPSING.

Naomi watched from the nursery.

Roman entered.

He looked exhausted.

Jude woke.

Roman lifted him.

The baby stared at his father.

"What?" Roman asked softly.

Jude sneezed.

Naomi laughed.

Roman smiled.

Then Victor entered with another alert.

"Kincaid released a statement."

Roman frowned.

"Public?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

Victor showed them.

Malcolm Kincaid denied everything.

Called Roman unstable.

Grief-stricken.

A liar trying to save himself.

Then came the final sentence.

Roman Vale will learn that betraying blood has consequences.

Naomi felt cold.

Roman handed the phone back.

"He's scared."

Victor nodded.

"Very."

Naomi looked toward the three babies.

Scared men were dangerous.

Especially powerful ones.

May you like

And Malcolm Kincaid was still free.
