Chapter 14 - The War Roman Refused to Fight

The community center was surrounded before sunset.

Federal agents.

Baltimore police.

Tactical teams.

Ambulances.

Media helicopters.

Crowds held behind barricades.

Naomi watched everything from a command vehicle two blocks away.

She had insisted on coming.

Roman had insisted she stay behind the inner perimeter.

This time she agreed.

There was brave.

Then there was foolish.

Roman sat across from Evelyn.

Kincaid had twenty-three hostages.

Two staff members.

A nurse.

Several mothers.

Four children.

One elderly volunteer.

Others attending an evening support group.

The same kind of people Elise had wanted to protect.

Roman stared at the building.

"He chose it because of her."

Evelyn nodded.

"He knows the symbolism."

"He wants me angry."

"Yes."

Roman smiled bitterly.

"Everyone does."

Naomi sat beside him.

"What does he actually want?"

Evelyn handed Roman a phone.

"Call."

Roman dialed.

Kincaid answered immediately.

"King."

Roman's jaw tightened.

"Malcolm."

"Finally."

"Let them go."

Kincaid laughed.

"You've become polite."

"What do you want?"

"You."

"Why?"

"Because you destroyed everything."

Roman looked toward Evelyn.

She signaled to keep him talking.

Kincaid continued.

"Do you know how many people lost money because you suddenly developed a conscience?"

Roman replied, "Send invoices."

Naomi almost smiled.

Kincaid didn't.

"Your wife did this."

Roman's face became stone.

"Leave Elise out of your mouth."

There it was.

Old Roman.

Close.

Naomi touched his wrist.

He looked at her.

Breathed.

Kincaid heard the pause.

"Is she there?"

Roman didn't answer.

"Naomi Bell."

Roman's grip tightened.

"Don't."

Kincaid laughed.

"Interesting."

Evelyn gestured for Roman to continue.

"What do you want?"

"Come inside."

"No."

"A mother and child leave every five minutes you remain."

Roman's eyes narrowed.

"And if I enter?"

"Everyone leaves."

Roman looked toward Evelyn.

She shook her head.

Impossible.

Too dangerous.

Kincaid continued.

"No agents. No wire. No Victor."

Roman said, "You're asking me to trust you."

"I'm asking you to be a father."

Then the call ended.

Roman stood.

"I'm going."

Evelyn blocked him.

"No."

"There are children."

"We have teams."

"He'll kill them."

"You don't know that."

Roman looked at her.

"I know men like him."

Naomi said quietly, "Because you were one."

Roman turned.

She continued.

"Would you have killed children?"

"No."

"Then don't assume everyone who lives in darkness has no boundary."

"Kincaid does."

"Maybe."

Roman looked toward the building.

Naomi continued.

"But he wants you inside for a reason."

Evelyn nodded.

"He's losing leverage."

Victor entered.

"We found the rear service tunnel."

Evelyn looked up.

"What tunnel?"

"Old church construction. Connects basement to neighboring property."

Tactical teams changed plans.

Roman remained near the phone.

Kincaid called again.

"Time."

Roman answered.

"Release someone."

"Come inside."

"No."

Kincaid's voice hardened.

"You think you're better than me now?"

"No."

Roman looked at Naomi.

"I think I'm finally tired of being you."

Silence.

Then a door opened across the street.

One hostage emerged.

A woman carrying a toddler.

Agents rushed them away.

Roman closed his eyes.

Kincaid spoke.

"Five minutes."

Another call.

Another hostage released.

Why?

Naomi realized first.

"He wants the cameras."

Evelyn looked at her.

"What?"

"He wants people watching Roman choose."

Victor nodded.

"Public humiliation."

Kincaid wasn't simply trying to kill Roman.

He wanted to prove Roman's transformation was fake.

Force him into the building.

Trigger violence.

Make headlines.

CRIME BOSS RETURNS TO OLD WAYS.

Naomi leaned toward Roman.

"Don't give him the story."

Roman stared.

The words hit him.

For years, other people had written his story.

Prosecutors.

Newspapers.

His father.

Crown Street.

Kincaid.

Now Elise had asked him to choose.

Roman sat back down.

"I'm staying."

Tactical teams entered the tunnel.

The next twelve minutes felt like hours.

Kincaid released three more hostages.

Then stopped.

He sensed something.

"Roman."

"Yes."

"You did something."

"No."

"You're lying."

Roman almost smiled.

"I'm learning."

Shots sounded inside the building.

Naomi flinched.

Roman stood.

Evelyn pressed a hand to her earpiece.

"Teams engaged."

More noise.

Then silence.

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Two.

Roman didn't breathe.

Finally Evelyn looked up.

"Hostages secure."

Naomi closed her eyes.

"Kincaid?"

Evelyn listened.

"Alive."

Roman exhaled.

"Good."

Victor looked surprised.

Roman noticed.

"What?"

"You said good."

"Elise wanted truth."

A few minutes later, Malcolm Kincaid emerged in handcuffs.

Cameras flashed.

He had a cut over one eye.

Otherwise unharmed.

He saw Roman across the barricade.

"Vale!"

Roman didn't move.

Kincaid shouted.

"Coward!"

Roman remained still.

"Come here!"

Nothing.

"You think you're clean now?"

Roman looked at Naomi.

Then walked toward the barricade, stopping where agents allowed.

Kincaid smiled.

"There he is."

Roman said calmly, "You're alive."

Kincaid frowned.

"That bothers you?"

"No."

Roman smiled faintly.

"It bothers you."

Kincaid's expression changed.

Roman continued.

"You wanted me to kill you."

Naomi understood.

A dead Kincaid became a martyr inside the underworld.

A murdered enemy confirmed Roman remained king.

An imprisoned Kincaid became evidence that the world had moved beyond old rules.

Roman stepped closer.

"You'll spend years answering questions."

Kincaid lunged against the agents.

Roman didn't react.

"You'll die without Crown Street!" Kincaid shouted.

Roman looked toward the community center.

"No."

He glanced at Naomi.

"I think I'll have breakfast."

Kincaid was taken away.

The hostage crisis ended without a single civilian death.

Two agents suffered minor injuries.

Kincaid faced federal charges that would likely keep him incarcerated for decades.

For Roman, that should have been victory.

Instead, Evelyn approached him later that night.

"We need to discuss your cooperation agreement."

Naomi saw Roman's face change.

"What?"

"The evidence is strong."

"Good."

"Against Kincaid. Gabriel. Grant. Others."

Roman nodded.

"But?"

Evelyn's expression softened slightly.

"Against you too."

Naomi's stomach tightened.

Roman didn't look surprised.

"What charges?"

"Conspiracy. Financial offenses. Extortion-related conduct."

Victor stepped forward.

"How much exposure?"

Evelyn looked at Roman.

"Even with cooperation, prison is possible."

Naomi felt something inside her drop.

Roman looked toward the community center.

He seemed strangely calm.

"I knew."

Naomi stared.

He turned toward her.

"This was always coming."

She wanted to say no.

Wanted to find some loophole.

Some billionaire solution.

But that would erase everything he'd done.

Change without consequence wasn't change.

Roman looked at Evelyn.

"When?"

"Voluntary surrender hearing in two weeks."

Roman nodded.

"Okay."

Naomi's eyes filled.

He noticed.

"Don't."

"What?"

"Look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I'm leaving."

Naomi couldn't answer.

Roman smiled sadly.

"I haven't even learned bottles properly."

She laughed through tears.

"You're terrible."

"I know."

Victor walked away to give them privacy.

Roman looked toward the city.

"I thought choosing the right life would feel better."

Naomi stood beside him.

"Sometimes right just hurts differently."

Roman nodded.

His shoulder brushed hers.

Neither moved away.

Across Baltimore, reporters celebrated the end of Malcolm Kincaid's hostage crisis.

Inside Naomi, another countdown had begun.

Fourteen days.

Then Roman Vale would walk voluntarily into federal court and learn how much of his future he'd have to give up to earn the life Elise wanted for their sons.

May you like

And for the first time, Naomi realized she didn't want him to face that future alone.
