Chapter 15 - Marcus Came Back With a Ring

It happened on Lily's fifth birthday.
Marcus arrived holding a small velvet box.
I stared.
"No."
He laughed.
"It's not for you."
"Good."
Lily ran toward him.
The box contained a tiny silver necklace.
A lily pendant.
On the back were three words:
ALWAYS COME HOME.
I swallowed.
Marcus saw my expression.
"Too much?"
"No."
He fastened it around her neck.
Lily hugged him.
Then she hugged me.
"Family hug!"
Marcus and I looked at each other.
Five years earlier, that request would have hurt.
Now we knelt.
Lily wrapped one arm around each of us.
There we were.
Not married.
Not pretending.
Still family.
Later, Marcus told me he was seeing someone.
Her name was Rachel.
A teacher.
My first reaction surprised me.
Relief.
Not jealousy.
Relief.
"Does Lily know?"
"Not yet."
"Serious?"
"Maybe."
"Then take it slowly."
"I will."
Months later, I met Rachel.
She was kind.
More importantly, she didn't compete with me.
She didn't try to become Lily's mother.
She simply became another adult who cared about her.
Eventually Marcus proposed.
He called me before telling Lily.
"I wanted you to hear it from me."
"Thank you."
"Are you okay?"
I smiled.
"Yes."
And I meant it.
The man who once destroyed our marriage was building another life.
May you like
This time, perhaps, with enough humility not to destroy it.
