Chapter 17 - The Home They Built

Five years passed.

The valley changed.

A schoolhouse stood near the river.

Ranches operated alongside tribal lands under agreements negotiated rather than imposed.

Not everything was peaceful.

Not every dispute disappeared.

But people talked before reaching for weapons more often than they once had.

That counted as progress.

Hope Mercer grew into a fearless child.

At four, she climbed onto Elias's horse without permission.

At five, she announced she intended to become sheriff.

“Absolutely not,” Elias said.

Naya smiled.

“She decide.”

“She is five.”

“Still decide.”

Elias pointed at his wife.

“This philosophy of yours has gotten out of control.”

Hope raised a wooden spoon like a pistol.

“Hands up!”

Thomas obeyed immediately.

“See?” Naya said. “Good sheriff.”

Elias surrendered.

Their second child, a boy named Taza after Naya's father, was quieter.

He followed Elias everywhere.

One afternoon, Elias took both children to the ridge where he had first seen Naya's valley.

Hope asked, “Papa, how did you meet Mama?”

Elias considered the question.

“She threatened me with a knife.”

Hope's eyes widened delightedly.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Naya approached behind them.

“He point gun first.”

“That was at five criminals.”

“Still gun.”

Hope looked between them.

“Then what happened?”

Elias smiled.

“Your mother told me we were married.”

Hope burst into laughter.

Naya folded her arms.

“Worked.”

Elias couldn't argue.

That evening, Thomas arrived with news.

The governor wanted Elias to accept an appointment as territorial marshal.

Elias immediately refused.

Thomas wasn't surprised.

“You'd be good at it.”

“I've had enough chasing bad men.”

“What will you do instead?”

Elias looked at his children.

“Stay home.”

Once, those words would have frightened him.

Now they felt like freedom.

But Naya later challenged him.

“You refuse because want home?”

“Yes.”

“Or fear leave?”

Elias stared.

She knew him too well.

“I don't know.”

“Then decide true reason.”

He spent days thinking.

Eventually he accepted a different role: civilian liaison helping settle land and ranching disputes.

No badge.

No gun required.

Mostly.

It allowed him to help without becoming the man he had once been.

And Naya continued teaching.

Together they built something neither had expected.

Not simply a family.

A place where two worlds could meet without one erasing the other.

But one final piece of their past remained unfinished.

Thomas had never returned to their mother's grave.

May you like

And Elias knew why.
