Chapter 18 - The Brother Who Came Home

Thomas resisted.
“I don't need to go.”
“Yes, you do.”
“Since when did you become wise?”
“Married Naya.”
Thomas considered.
“Fair.”
They rode to New Mexico together.
Naya and the children came.
At their mother's grave, Thomas stood silently.
Then he broke.
For years he'd carried guilt for disappearing.
For Sarah.
For Elias.
For everything Calder had done while Thomas tried to expose him.
Elias had once hated him for it.
Now he understood.
“You should've told me.”
“I know.”
“You should've trusted me.”
“I know.”
“You were an idiot.”
Thomas laughed through tears.
“I know.”
Elias embraced him.
It was awkward.
Then real.
Hope watched.
“Papa?”
“Yes?”
“Uncle Thomas crying?”
“No.”
Thomas wiped his face.
“Dust.”
Hope looked around.
There was no wind.
“What dust?”
“Very specific dust.”
Naya laughed.
They remained until sunset.
Before leaving, Elias placed Sarah's letter beneath a small stone beside her grave—not the original, but a handwritten copy.
He kept the original.
Some memories deserved to travel with you.
On the return journey, they stopped at the same abandoned mission where Calder had once surrounded them.
It was peaceful now.
Hope ran between the old walls.
Naya stood beside Elias.
“Remember?”
“Twenty men shooting at us? Hard to forget.”
“Before.”
He looked at her.
She touched his arm.
“You not trust.”
“Neither did you.”
“I had knife.”
“Yes, I remember the knife.”
She smiled.
“You gave choice.”
Elias understood.
That was what she remembered most.
Not the rescue.
Not the gunfight.
The choice.
He had given her food, water and a place to sleep without demanding anything.
She had given him something equally important.
Permission to stop living as punishment.
Elias took her hand.
“Do you ever regret it?”
“What?”
“Choosing me.”
Naya pretended to think.
“Sometimes.”
He looked offended.
She laughed.
Then kissed him.
“No.”
They watched their children playing beneath the mission bell.
Elias realized their story had never really been about a cowboy saving a woman.
Naya had saved herself long before he appeared.
She had fought five men with a knife.
Protected her father's evidence.
Faced Calder.
Testified.
Reclaimed her future.
Elias had simply stood beside her when she needed someone.
And later, she had done exactly the same for him.
They returned home as the first stars appeared.
Tomorrow marked ten years since the evening they had met.
Naya had planned something.
Elias knew because everyone in the valley was terrible at keeping secrets.
But he had no idea what waited inside their old cabin.
May you like
The same cabin where, years earlier, five words had changed everything.
