Chapter 14 - Haven

Two years after Dad's stolen dream nearly disappeared into Northstar, Haven opened.

The first property sat among redwoods overlooking the Pacific.

Dad would have loved it.

No giant sign.

No flashy entrance.

Stone.

Wood.

Water.

Silence.

The opening ceremony was deliberately small.

Employees.

Partners.

My mother.

No celebrities.

No red carpet.

At the center of the garden stood a small bronze plaque.

HAVEN

Originally conceived by Thomas Whitmore.

Built in honor of the futures we carry, including those we never get to see.

Below it:

D.T.W.V.

Daniel Thomas Whitmore Vale.

I kept both family names for him.

He belonged to both of us.

Adrian attended quietly.

I had invited him.

When he saw the initials, he looked at me.

“Thank you.”

“He was your son.”

We stood beside the plaque.

“I wish I had been different sooner,” he said.

“So do I.”

He nodded.

No false comfort.

No rewriting history.

Then I added:

“But you're different now.”

His eyes filled.

“I'm trying.”

“I know.”

That was forgiveness beginning.

Not reconciliation.

May you like

Not forgetting.

Just the decision to stop carrying poison.
