Chapter 15 - The Vote That Changed Everything

Vale Meridian's board offered me the permanent CEO position unanimously.

I surprised them.

“No.”

Samuel Price nearly dropped his pen.

“You've been acting CEO for almost two years.”

“I know.”

“And the company has posted its strongest operating performance in six years.”

“I know.”

“Then why refuse?”

Because I had learned something Adrian hadn't understood until too late.

A title can consume you if you let it.

“I'll remain executive chair.”

I appointed Maya Torres—the woman whose hand I held in the elevator—as chief operating officer several months later after a competitive process, and promoted a respected internal executive, Elena Brooks, to CEO.

I wanted a company that could survive without worshiping one person.

Especially me.

The announcement shocked the business press.

It delighted me.

For the first time since Dad died, Vale Meridian didn't feel like a throne.

It felt like an institution.

That evening, Mom and I ate dinner in Dad's kitchen.

“Happy?” she asked.

I thought about it.

“Yes.”

Not healed completely.

Not untouched.

May you like

Happy.

There was a difference.
